The Endearing Features of Fisher-Price's Laugh & Learn Smart Stages Sis

The Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn series has long been a staple in early childhood education, and Sister, often referred to as Sis, plays a central role in this beloved line of toys. As the deuteragonist of the series, Sis has appeared alongside Puppy in numerous Fisher-Price toys and games, even starring in her own dedicated products like Sis' Smart Stages Purse and Sis' Tea Party Book. This article delves into the various features and iterations of Sis, highlighting her evolution and enduring appeal.

Sis's Core Personality and Design

Sis is depicted as a lovable dog, resembling a beagle with distinct features: pink ears, blue eyes, a pink nose, and tan fur. In her original 2D appearances, she sported purple ribbons atop her ears, a detail that has evolved over time. Sis is portrayed as a caring and playful character, often seen worrying about her friend Puppy. Her personality shines through in her interactions, showcasing her eagerness to learn, her affection for friends and family, and her active imagination. Sis enjoys playing games with her friends. She seems to have a good relationship with Puppy and the rest of her friends, shown how she enjoys playing games with all of them at once. Sis has her own personality.

The Evolution of Sis: From Love to Play to Smart Stages

Initially, Sis was introduced as the female counterpart to Love to Play Puppy. Both toys shared similar features, including labels on their paws, feet, and ears, as well as a light-up red heart on their tummies. Squeezing the left foot allowed users to switch between learning mode and games/song mode. The toy would power off when the foot was squeezed a third time. This version focused on introducing children to the alphabet, numbers, counting, body parts, and colors through music, phrases, and sing-along songs.

The introduction of Smart Stages technology marked a significant upgrade to Sis. Now softer and cuddlier, Sis incorporated six interactive touchpoints-ear, hands, tummy, heart, and foot-and three Smart Stages levels of play. These levels offer over 50 sing-along songs, tunes, and phrases, teaching letters, numbers, colors, body parts, and more.

Smart Stages Technology Breakdown

Smart Stages technology tailors the learning content to a child's developmental stage. Sis’ learning content changes as baby grows! Parents can select the most appropriate level for their child, recognizing that every baby develops at their own pace. The three levels are:

  • Level 1 - Explore - 6M+: This level introduces first words and sounds to spark a baby's curiosity.
  • Level 2 - Encourage - 12M+: This level prompts the baby through questions and simple directions.
  • Level 3 - Pretend - 18M+: This level encourages imaginative fun and early role play.

Holding down Sis' light-up heart allows the child to play all 20 of her sing-along songs in a row.

Variations and Adaptations of Sis

Over the years, Fisher-Price has released various versions of Sis, each with unique features and designs.

Smart Stages Sis (JCT11)

Smart Stages Sis (JCT11) introduces a brand new design for Sis. Sis herself is colored similarly to the 2017 version of Smart Stages Sis, but JCT11's eyes are larger, her nose is smaller, her sewn-on mouth is different and her eyes are more teal than her 2017 counterpart. She also no longer has two purple bows on her pink ears, instead having a cyan hair bow in the center of her head. Unlike past iterations of the Sis plush where activations throughout her body triggered sound and/or lights, all of JCT11's activation points are on a pink plastic circle on her belly; four of these buttons are in different colors and are framing her light-up heart. Above Sis' heart is a oval-shaped red button that serves as the Smart Stages switch. Below Sis' heart is a small pressable button the same color as the plastic circle on her belly. The front of Sis' arms, along with the bottoms of her feet, are in different colors and they all have a different pattern on them that correspond to the colored buttons on her belly. Sis is activated by pressing the five buttons on her belly. When switched on, Sis giggles, followed by saying "Level 1, let's have some fun!". If you press the Smart Stages button she will play a sound effect (either one, two or three dings) followed by saying either "Level 2, let's learn something new!", "Level 3, let's pretend!", or "Level 1, let's have some fun!"; if you switch her off and turn her back on she will return to Level 1. Unlike other Fisher-Price toys with Smart Stages technology, both this toy and Smart Stages Puppy (JCT10), as well as the Count & Shop Cash Register, have a button that changes the level, as opposed to a switch or a trigger on Puppy's/Sis' foot. In any level, if the user presses and holds the small button below Sis' heart, it will light up white. In the case of a multilingual version this button instead changes the language Sis speaks. If the user presses and holds the small button below Sis' heart for at least four seconds, the user will hear a voice say the name of one of the languages she can speak in that language. The first Fisher-Price toy overall to have the "fake-out" "Multilingual Button" function on a multilingual toy's "one language only" version.

Other Notable Variations

  • Larger Smart Stages Sis with a Hard Base: This version is a slightly larger version of the Smart Stages Sis with a hard base on the bottom that gives access to the Smart Stages switch, on/off switch, and battery compartment. The toy does not have multiple paw buttons, but rather one single multicolor light up circular button on its chest. Instead of her usual pink dress, Sis wears a white shirt/jacket with green, blue, and pink stripes along with a star design on the front and green sleeves with pink at the tips paired with pink pants and green sneakers with blue printed on laces. This new change slightly mimics workout clothing, sportswear, and everyday active wear. Instead of the usual 3 smart stages, the toy only has 2 stages.
  • Extra-Large Motion-Activated Sis: This extra-large Sis features motion-activated songs, sounds and phrases to encourage toddlers to get moving. This toy is smaller and less interactive compared to other toys.
  • Nighttime Sis: This version of Sis is intended for daytime (but mostly nighttime use). It has two buttons. Baby will love learning about nighttime routines, counting and more. Pressing Sis' tummy rewards baby with playful daytime phrases. When it's time to wind down, hold the heart button to lock into lullaby mode. Baby will hear 10 minutes of soothing lullabies with three minutes of glowing light. Soft textures and a light-up heart help set the scene for a comforting bedtime routine.

Voice and Design Changes

From 2012 until 2019, Sis' voice was notably higher pitched and much cuter. According to "Storybook Rhymes Vol. In late 2024, her redesign ditches the purple bows on her ears and replaces it with a blue hair ribbon on a tuft in the middle of her head.
