Mahoney, J., Durlak, J., & Weissberg, R., (2018) found in their examination of 356 research studies that SEL programs positively impact students’ behavioral and academic outcomes, and concluded that they are feasible and effective in various educational contexts worldwide.

In the short term, SEL interventions result in reduced behavioral problems (Morris et al., 2013), improved classroom climate (Greenberg et al., 2017), and enhanced student engagement (Schonert-Reichl et al., 2015).

The SEL field has seen significant growth and evolution in recent years and has been gaining purchase in schools and districts, demonstrating that the value of SEL specialists’ work is increasingly being recognized.

One notable trend we are seeing is the gradual integration of SEL into the wider school curriculum over the last 20 years. The data from various studies and projects support this, in particular those from large-scale implementation projects such as one in New Jersey, which aimed to build students’ SEL skills to a school-wide level (Romasz et al., 2004). The project was able to extend beyond classroom curricula to encompass school-wide activities, showing an evolution in the approach to how SEL is successfully integrated into wider educational practices in a systemic way.

Additionally, technology is playing a vital role in SEL implementation by providing innovative tools and platforms that facilitate the teaching and learning of social-emotional skills. With the advent of new technologies designed to enhance SEL instruction, educators can deliver more personalized and engaging experiences for students. AR, VR, and AI have been shown to be effective in teaching core SEL skills (Mittal, 2020) and have led to significant improvements in students’ social and emotional skills, empathy, and responsibility, particularly when integrating interactive digital activities (Iaosanurak et al., 2016).

Others may establish activities throughout the day, such as journaling and other forms of student expression. Teachers can also blend SEL-related lessons into more concrete subjects like math, English, and science. One example of utilizing SEL in more defined subjects is to create open-ended project assignments that allow students to present themselves through creativity and self-expression, such as role-play.

SEL and Racial Equity

Recognizing the importance of weaving SEL into the curriculum can help foster positive attitudes in the classroom. In collaboration with the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence (YCEI), and ToH Leadership Team, the Social Emotional Learning Specialist (SELS) will support a school to advance the use of SEL assessments in the promotion of racial equity. The SEL Specialist will support each school in administering research-based SEL assessments, evaluate the practical use of the suite of the assessments, examine how the tools work together to support the school mission, and document and catalog best practices around implementation. In order to prioritize stakeholder feedback, the SEL specialist will facilitate school-based “Advise-and-Design'' teams with the goal of working alongside educators and students to consider how assessments and their utility might be improved to address issues of equity and inclusion.

A Look at Trajectory of Hope's Approach

Trajectory of Hope (ToH) exists to create a more just and equitable society. They work from the inside out to demystify how the legacy of racism and injustice in America impacts Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) and other marginalized communities. They work with educational agencies and organizations to uncover implicit bias, by facilitating space for critical reflection and dialogue, affinity groups, and healing circles. They are experts in facilitating restorative conversations and driving critical discourse about racial equity that promotes reconciliation, internal change and ultimately transform external behavior. Trajectory of Hope empowers leaders and critical stakeholders working within school districts and non-profit organizations to dismantle the oppressive structures that uphold systemic racism in order to fuel institutional change.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities of an SEL Specialist at ToH

Reporting to the Chief Operations Offices and working closely with other TOH leadership team members to support the mission, and vision of TOH, the essential responsibilities of the Social Emotional Learning Specialist (SELS) position include:

SEL Implementation: Build the capacity of school staff to employ a suite of assessments and portal that organizes a school around SEL by providing ongoing guidance, coaching and feedback. Facilitate school-based teams that allow space for students and educators to critique, advise, and consider how the assessments and their utility might be improved to better address issues of equity and inclusion at their school. Identify promising practices within and across networks and facilitate ways to highlight and share these practices across schools.
SEL Evaluation: Facilitate the use of data using tools that assess or reflect student social-emotional development to improve social-emotional programming and approaches within the schools MTSS framework. Train school staff in data analysis and support school teams in data-driven action-planning.
SEL Sustainability: Support schools in analyzing strengths/challenges of assessment implementation and response to data in order to suggest improvements. Document and catalog implementation strengths and challenges. Implement the systems and structures to ensure sustainability of SEL programs and approaches.
Collaboration Within the ToH Community: Collaborate with the Trajectory of Hope leadership team to implement an effective SEL program.

The Path to Becoming an SEL Specialist

There are many types of programs and degrees available for aspiring social emotional learning specialists. The mission of social emotional learning programs is to prepare educators with the skills required to implement a wide range of social-emotional and character-based programs to students with diverse learning needs. National University offers a Master of Education program with an internship option that focuses on social emotional learning. This Internship option requires the successful completion of the internship clinical practice experience. In order to facilitate students’ social and emotional learning, an educator must see the student as a human being. Teachers must also strive to know and understand themselves. Through proper training, social emotional learning specialists will learn a wide variety of skills to assist students in finding a stronger sense of self-worth. Social emotional learning is a philosophy and a methodology that helps students of all ages to better comprehend their emotions, to feel those emotions fully, and demonstrate empathy for those around them. It’s up to the educators and the SEL specialists to teach these learned behaviors. Addressing Student Issues

When individual student social, emotional, and/or behavior issues arise, consult with school staff on prevention, de-escalation, and intervention strategies, and identify opportunities for minimizing or addressing behavior issues in the future. Understand the principles and the regulations around restraints and seclusion. Develop schedules, collect data, analyze the data from the district SEL Platform and develop the action plan for the students' rating areas such as emerging and or at-risk. Advise schools during emergencies and crises and facilitate communication and collaboration with the Counselors, Child Study Team Staff, and or Mental Health Practitioners. Deep knowledge of evidence-based and promising equity-focused, trauma-engaged practices for developing students' social and emotional competencies, building relationships between school stakeholders, and increasing student engagement.
