A Strategically Located Campus
Soka University of America is located in Aliso Viejo, California, a suburban setting in southern Orange County. The campus is less than a half-hour drive from Laguna Beach. This location offers students a blend of suburban tranquility and easy access to the cultural and recreational opportunities of Southern California.
From Humble Beginnings to a State-of-the-Art Campus
Originally founded in 1987 as Soka University of Los Angeles (SULA), the institution initially operated as a small English as a Second Language (ESL) school in Calabasas. This campus was located on the 588-acre former Gillette−Brown Ranch in Calabasas and the Santa Monica Mountains. The location has historical significance, having been the site of pre-Columbian Talepop, a settlement of the Chumash people. In the 1920s, it became the rural estate of King Gillette, featuring a mansion designed by Wallace Neff.
In 1995, SUA acquired 103 acres of rough-graded property in Aliso Viejo for $25 million. The university then invested $265 million to construct the first 18 buildings of the new campus. The Aliso Viejo campus opened on May 3, 2001, welcoming 120 first-year undergraduate students from 18 countries and 18 states. Since August 2007, the Aliso Viejo campus has been the central location for all of SUA's graduate, undergraduate, and research programs.
Architectural Inspiration and Campus Aesthetics
The architecture of the Aliso Viejo campus was designed in a style resembling an Italian hillside village in Tuscany. It features red-tiled roofs, stonework, and earth colors. Three academic buildings were named after Daisaku Ikeda and his wife, Kaneko Ikeda; Linus Pauling and Eva Helen Pauling; and Mohandas Gandhi and Kasturba Gandhi.

Resources for Students
Located at the Student Center, third floor (above the Dining Hall), the SUA Bookstore is the one-stop place for getting course materials, school gear, and supplies. The Bookstore is also “sweat-free” and is opposed to any actions by licensees/vendors that would constitute unfair labor practices and/or labor abuse. A request for certification is issued to all vendors from which the Bookstore purchases SUA logo merchandise.
Academic Excellence and Unique Programs
Soka University of America is ranked No. #37 in National Liberal Arts Colleges and No. #9 in Top Performers on Social Mobility in the 2026 edition of Best Colleges. The student-faculty ratio at Soka University of America is 7:1, and it utilizes a semester-based academic calendar. Classrooms are centers of dialogue and discussion, emphasizing seminar course settings with an average class size of 13. All undergraduate students live on campus.
The undergraduate college offers a Bachelor of Liberal Arts with emphasis areas in Environmental Studies, Humanities, Social & Behavioral Sciences, International Studies, or Life Sciences. There are no discipline-based departments at Soka University. Instead, the institution has focused on interdisciplinarity. Study Abroad Program
All undergraduate students at Soka University of America must study a non-native language. The languages offered are Spanish, French, Mandarin Chinese, and Japanese. A cornerstone of the undergraduate experience at SUA is the mandatory study abroad program. All undergraduates study abroad for a semester in a country where that language is spoken, the cost of which is included in tuition. This immersive experience enhances language proficiency and broadens students' cultural understanding.

Pacific Basin Research Center
The Pacific Basin Research Center (PBRC) supports research on the humane and peaceful development of the Asia-Pacific Region, including the Latin American border states. It awards grants and fellowships to researchers studying public policy interactions in the Pacific Rim in such areas as international security, economic and social development, educational and cultural reform, environmental protection and human rights.
A Diverse and Globally-Minded Community
About 60% of SUA's student body is from the United States, with the other 40% coming from 30 other countries on six continents. Life at SUA focuses on the growth and development of students as global citizens and provides a wide variety of programs that emphasize engagement, collaboration, activism, advocacy, team-building, and community. Nearly half of the student body is international.
Accessibility and Financial Aid
Soka University of America accepts the Common Application and has a test-optional admissions policy. Ninety percent of first-year students receive need-based financial aid, and the average net price for federal loan recipients is $21,267. In order to ensure that the university is accessible to all admitted students, our Office of Financial Aid partners with students and families to promote greater diversity and access. SUA has a comprehensive merit and need-based financial aid program that ensures the fair distribution of institutional, state, and federal funds. Since 2008, full tuition Soka Opportunity Scholarships are available for admitted students whose families make $60,000 or less.
Student Life and Athletics
The Soka athletic teams are called the Lions. The institution is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), primarily competing in the California Pacific Conference (Cal Pac) for most of its sports since the 2012-13 academic year; its men's & women's swimming & diving teams compete in the Pacific Collegiate Swim and Dive Conference (PCSC).
Graduation Rates and Alumni Success
The four-year graduation rate is 79%. Between 2005 and 2007, SUA graduated its first three undergraduate classes with an average graduation rate of 90%. The average first-year student retention is 92% with 87% graduating within six years. Six years after graduation, the median salary for graduates is $42,696.

Controversies and Challenges
In 2003, two professors claimed they experienced religious discrimination, breach of contract as well as age discrimination. Soka University administrators disputed all allegations of discrimination and noted that the majority of faculty and staff are not Buddhist, said there was no evidence of preferential treatment, and said that the institution has never taught nor will it teach Buddhist-or any other-religious practices. One professor took legal action against SUA based on these allegations, but her case was dismissed on summary judgment. Another one, Linda Southwell, a terminated fine-arts professor, sued the university, alleging religious discrimination, wrongful termination and fraud.
