Sophie Cunningham: From High School Football to WNBA Star
Sophie Elizabeth Cunningham, born on August 16, 1996, is an American professional basketball player who currently plays for the Indiana Fever in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). While she is primarily known for her basketball prowess, Cunningham's athletic journey includes a brief but notable stint as a high school football player, showcasing her versatility and competitive spirit.
Early Life and High School Career
Cunningham attended Rock Bridge High School, where she excelled in both basketball and volleyball. Her athletic abilities were evident from a young age, and she quickly became a standout player in both sports. However, it was her unexpected foray into football that captured attention and revealed another dimension of her athletic talent.
A Kicking Cameo in Missouri High School Football
During her senior year at Rock Bridge High School, Cunningham stepped onto the gridiron as an emergency placekicker for the Bruins football team. This unusual opportunity arose when the team's primary kicker suffered a season-ending ACL injury just before the playoffs in 2014. Despite having no prior football experience, Cunningham embraced the challenge and quickly learned the fundamentals of kicking.
"I was so nervous," Cunningham recalled in an interview. "I mean, I've never played football before in all my life. Right when I got the ball (on the opening kickoff), I couldn't hear anything. I just put the ball down and kicked it."
After participating in the required 14 practices, Cunningham suited up for the team and successfully converted two extra points (XPs) during their Class 6 state playoff run. This accomplishment made her the first female athlete in Rock Bridge history to score for the varsity football team.

Cunningham's brief football career became a memorable part of her high school experience. She has often joked about the awkwardness of the pictures from the game, where she was "out there with my football pants on" during the halftime homecoming ceremony.
College Basketball at the University of Missouri
After graduating from Rock Bridge High School, Cunningham committed to play college basketball at the University of Missouri (Mizzou), her hometown school. From 2015 to 2019, she established herself as one of the most decorated players in the history of the women's basketball program.
A Standout Career with the Missouri Tigers
Cunningham made an immediate impact at Missouri, starting all 129 games of her career. As a freshman, she set the school single-game scoring record with 42 points in her debut, earning her the SEC Freshman of the Year award. She continued to excel throughout her college career, becoming a three-time First-Team All-SEC selection (2017-2019).
In her senior year, Cunningham achieved another milestone, becoming the first player in program history to earn Third-Team All-America honors from both the Associated Press and the USBWA. She led the Tigers to four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, a feat the team had not accomplished since 1990.
By the end of her collegiate career, Cunningham had solidified her legacy as a Tiger legend, leaving as the program's all-time statistical leader in several key categories.

Playing with the Phoenix Mercury
As a rookie, Cunningham primarily served in a reserve role for the Mercury, averaging 3.1 points and 1.4 rebounds in 12.2 minutes per game across 32 appearances.
Over time, Cunningham has evolved into a key rotational player known for her two-way play. Her scoring, rebounding, and overall efficiency have steadily improved, reflecting her growing role with the team. She quickly gained a reputation as a gritty, trash-talking enforcer and defensive leader.
In December 2022, Cunningham expanded her role with the Phoenix Suns organization, becoming a recurring analyst for the Phoenix Suns on their Suns Live! broadcasts.
