Paying for college can be daunting, but numerous scholarship opportunities exist for South Carolina residents. State-Funded Scholarships
South Carolina offers several state-funded scholarships designed to support students attending in-state colleges and universities. These are designed to recognize South Carolina students’ academic merits. However, it's important to note that all requirements for eligibility, renewal, scholarship funding, and enhancement are under review by the South Carolina General Assembly and are subject to change.
Palmetto Fellows Scholarship: This is the state’s premier scholarship, designed to recognize the most academically talented South Carolina students, encourage them to study in South Carolina, and retain talented minority students who might otherwise attend school out-of-state. It is valued at $6,700 for the first year and $7,500 for subsequent years.
LIFE Scholarship (Legislative Incentive for Future Excellence): This scholarship was established to increase the number of students in the state majoring in STEM, to make higher education more accessible, and to improve the employability of South Carolina students. It is valued at $5,000 per year. To receive the LIFE Scholarship, students must meet specific academic requirements. There is no application process for the LIFE Scholarship.
SC HOPE Scholarship: The SC HOPE Scholarship is only available to students at 4-year institutions in their first year of study. It was established with the purpose of supporting new students who had at least a B average in high school but didn’t qualify for LIFE or Palmetto Fellows. It is valued at $2,800 and is nonrenewable. To receive the HOPE Scholarship, students must graduate with a minimum 3.0 GPA on the uniform grading scale.

Need-Based Grants
Grants are designed to assist students with the greatest financial needs and do not require repayment. South Carolina offers two main need-based grants: the South Carolina Tuition Grants and the South Carolina Need-based Grant.
Pell Grants: These are awarded to undergraduate students who haven’t earned a prior degree.
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG): Each participating institution has a limited amount of money it can offer as part of an FSEOG.
South Carolina Tuition Grants: These grants are awarded to multiple students attending one of 21 South Carolina universities. To be considered for the scholarship, interested students must complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) by August 1st. The South Carolina Tuition Grant is renewable, and recipients may receive a South Carolina Tuition Grant for up to eight semesters provided they remain eligible.
S.C. Need-based Grant: The S.C. Need-based grant is to provide additional financial aid to South Carolina’s neediest students. The amount awarded is up to $3,500, and details vary. To be eligible for grants, students must submit the FAFSA®.

Private and Local Scholarship Opportunities
In addition to state and federal aid, numerous private and local scholarships are available to South Carolina students. These scholarships often have specific eligibility requirements, such as residency in a particular county or enrollment in a specific program.

LAMC Community Mitigation Scholarship: This scholarship is open to residents of the Accabee, Chicora Cherokee, Union Heights, Howard Heights, Windsor Place, Five Mile, or Liberty Hill neighborhoods in North Charleston, South Carolina.
The William Melvin & Juanita W. Brown Scholarship: This scholarship is open to African American high school seniors who live in Charleston County, South Carolina. Scholarship is open to African American seniors graduating from high schools in Berkeley, Charleston, or Dorchester counties in South Carolina.
The Phillip O’Neill Hanvey Memorial Scholarship: This scholarship is open to Charleston County, South Carolina residents.

The Porgy & Bess Music Scholarship: This scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors and current college students majoring in music or music education.
The Rufus C. Barkley, Jr. Leadership Scholarship: This scholarship is open to graduating seniors from high schools in Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, or Dorchester counties in South Carolina.
The Shannon Sudderth Scholarship: This scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors in Charleston County, South Carolina.
The Thaddeus J. Bell, II Memorial Scholarship: This scholarship is open to graduating seniors from high schools in Charleston County, South Carolina.
Mary Doctor Fine Arts Scholarship Fund: This scholarship awards up to $10,000 to one to two students from the Charlotte Region who submit the best ~1-page responses to the question "You have now graduated college, what is your big dream?" Applicants from the following counties are eligible to apply: Alexander, Anson, Cabarrus, Catawba, Cleveland, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Rowan, Stanley, and Union in North Carolina, or Chester, Chesterfield, Lancaster, or York in South Carolina.
The UPLIFT Scholarship: This scholarship is open to seniors graduating from high schools in Berkeley, Charleston, or Dorchester counties in South Carolina. Students seeking a professional certification, associate, or bachelor's degree are encouraged to apply.
The J. C. and Alberta Long Scholarship: This scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors seeking a professional certification, associate, or bachelor's degree.
Warren O. Pinckney Scholarship: This scholarship is open to residents of Berkeley, Charleston, or Dorchester counties in South Carolina.
Amanda’s Scholarship Endowment: This $5,000 scholarship is offered to high school seniors from Berkeley County, Charleston County, or Dorchester County in South Carolina.
The Donna Reyburn and Michael Griffith Scholarship: This scholarship is open to graduating seniors from St. John's High School in South Carolina.
The Hebrew Orphan Society N. Edgar Miles, M.D. Scholarship: This scholarship is open to graduating seniors from high schools in Berkeley, Charleston, or Dorchester counties in South Carolina.
The "Ride of Your Life" Scholarship: This scholarship is offered to graduating high school seniors from South Carolina who wish to pursue a certification or degree at any college or university.
The William S. and Elizabeth B. Heath Scholarship: This scholarship is offered to graduating seniors from high schools in Sumter County, South Carolina. Special consideration is given to qualified employees of the former Carolina Coca-Cola Bottling Company in Sumter, South Carolina, or a legal dependent of a qualified employee.
The Zack and Rachel Clarkson Scholarship: This scholarship is offered to graduating seniors at Lower Richland High School in Columbia, South Carolina.
Women's Southern Golf Association Scholarship: The Women's Southern Golf Association Scholarship is available to female graduating high school seniors interested in golf.
Bud and Billie Eubanks Memorial Scholarship: This scholarship is meant to support students who would not otherwise have the means to attend college. The Dr. The Mrs. Clara Mae Coleman Technical School Award: This scholarship is open to graduating seniors from high schools in Bamberg County, South Carolina. The program accepts applications from people of African, Indigenous, Asian, or Hispanic descent.

Applicants must be attending an institution in a southern state (Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Texas or West Virginia), and are eligible to earn between $1,000 and $5,000 to go toward their education.

Start Early: Begin your scholarship search early in your high school career to maximize your opportunities.
Check Eligibility Requirements: Before applying for South Carolina scholarships, make sure you check the eligibility requirements.
