Journey to the Bluff: A Guide to Southern University's New Student Orientation

Embarking on your college journey is an exciting step, and Southern University is thrilled to welcome you to the Jaguar Nation! New Student Orientation programs are designed to welcome new students, parents, and families to the Southern University community. These carefully planned sessions offer a range of perspectives on life at Southern University, in addition to providing you with resources and information helpful to students, parents, and families during the first few months of the university experience.

The Importance of New Student Orientation

New Student Orientation (NSO) marks the exciting launch of a transformative journey for incoming first-year and transfer scholars. This vibrant event sets the tone for an unmatched college experience, where first-year and first-time transfer students are warmly embraced by the academic community and SUNO Administration. New Student Orientation provides a snapshot of campus life, academic resources, and a host of opportunities. Attending orientation is your required first step before enrolling in classes, ensuring a smooth transition and setting you up for success.

What to Expect During Orientation

New Student Orientation is one full day, packed with informative and engaging sessions. Jag 365 New Student Orientation is held on campus and virtually. Students are required to be engaged in all virtual sessions. Those who are moving into residential housing and are on campus for orientation can view department presentations, videos, flyers, and safety announcements on the big screens that will be stationed in the Courtyard and Residence Hall Circle, as well as on personal mobile devices. Commuter students (non-residential housing students) are welcome to visit the campus to receive welcome packets.

The summer orientation program is informative, helpful, and full of Southern spirit! First-year students are required to attend both days each session in their entirety. Check-in on the first day and students are expected to stay overnight.

Key Components of the Orientation Program:

  • Welcome and Introduction: Be warmly embraced by the academic community and SUNO Administration.
  • Campus Life Overview: Gain a snapshot of campus life.
  • Academic Resources: Learn about the academic resources available to you.
  • Opportunities: Explore a host of opportunities available.
  • Department Presentations: For residential students, department presentations, videos, flyers, and safety announcements will be available on big screens in the Courtyard and Residence Hall Circle.
  • Welcome Packets: Commuter students can receive welcome packets on campus.

Registration and Fees

There is a non-refundable registration fee for all students attending New Student Orientation. The orientation fee is separate from the housing fee. The fee will be added to your billing statement for the specified term at the beginning of the Spring and Fall semester after you register; you will not pay the fee when you register for orientation. The fee includes swag bag items, entertainment, and more! Your Orientation registration must be completed in full in order to receive a class schedule. Registration must be completed prior to the Orientation registration deadline.

What to Bring

As you prepare for orientation, keep the following in mind:

  • An electronic device (laptop, tablet if possible).
  • Comfortable dress and walking shoes.
  • All meals and snacks will be provided at no cost.

Lo-Fi Orientation Experience

Lo-Fi is essentially a lower-sensory, more relaxed experience designed to reduce overstimulation. The Lo-Fi Orientation Experience runs concurrently throughout the two-day orientation session and is not a separate program. The concept is inspired by lo-fi music, known for its calming, retro sound and steady, downtempo rhythm. The Lo-Fi Orientation Experience creates a calm, inclusive environment through smaller groups, softer visuals and sounds, and a more focused pace.
