While still in school, Wayne began working at the Lyon County Independent newspaper, which later merged to become the Marshall Independent. After a stint as the Sports Information Director at SMSU, he returned to journalism in Redwood Falls. Wayne's career has been marked by numerous writing awards and recognition for his contributions to amateur baseball, including the Glenn Carlson Distinguished Service Award. He cherishes the friendships he's made through sports and his connection to SMSU and Marshall.

Bruce and Linda Saugstad: A Team Dedicated to Service

Bruce Saugstad, a 1989 graduate, and Linda (Seid) Saugstad, a 1990 graduate, exemplify the power of teamwork and dedication to service. Both were student-athletes at SMSU, with Bruce playing football and Linda playing basketball. Bruce, originally from Huron, South Dakota, initially planned to become a math teacher but later majored in mathematics and computer science. Starting in the Worthington Hy-Vee, she has held various positions, each with increasing responsibility.

In 2020, Mary received the Hy-Vee Officer of the Year Award for her work in supporting communities during times of turmoil, including providing food and resources to areas affected by protests and natural disasters. Today, as Senior Vice President of the Southeast Region and Non-Foods for Hy-Vee, she focuses on understanding the unique needs of each community she serves. Marianne, with a background in public relations and fine arts, later joined the faculty in 2004, teaching public relations, creative writing, and journalism.

Both Jim and Marianne were known for their dedication to their students and their contributions to the Global Studies program. They retired from SMSU in 2015 and 2019, respectively, leaving a lasting legacy of academic excellence and community engagement.
