Army HBCU-MI SPARK: Fostering STEM Research

The Army Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Minority-Serving Institutions (HBCU-MI) Student Program for Army Research and Knowledge (SPARK) is a science outreach initiative sponsored by the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Acquisition, Logistics, and Technology (ASA[ALT]). This program provides undergraduate and graduate students in STEM fields with the opportunity to conduct hands-on research at Army facilities across the Army’s science and technology enterprise.

Students accepted into the 2026 program will spend their summer under the mentorship of Government scientists and engineers, contributing to Army mission-related research projects. Sanford Burnham Prebys, a preeminent research institution, offers the Summer Program to Accelerate Regenerative medicine Knowledge (SPARK), funded by a five-year grant from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM). This program provides California high school students with an opportunity to gain hands-on training in stem cell research.

Hands-On Training

The SPARK program is a six-week, fully paid internship open to high schoolers from California, with preference given to those residing in San Diego or Imperial County. Interns must be 16 years or older at the start of the internship. The program provides an invaluable opportunity to work with scientists and experience a real lab environment.

Real-World Experience

Participants appreciate the hands-on experience and the opportunity to see what it’s like to work in a real lab. They work with scientists who are passionate about their projects, developing their own passion for the work. Although the work is understandable for a high school level, the experience is not fully accommodated for young students, allowing them to understand what it’s like to be a scientist.

Success Stories

Between 2010 and 2019, Sanford Burnham Prebys hosted 80 interns, with 100% matriculating to college and the majority (76%) pursuing STEM majors. Among interns from the 2010-2016 cohorts, 100% have graduated with college degrees within four years. Of this population, 11 earned master’s degrees, and two earned doctorates.

California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) and Sanford Burnham Prebys have joined to launch the Creating Opportunities through Mentorship and Partnership Across Stem Cell Science (COMPASS) program.
