Students in the MS in Special Education program complete a research capstone course where they are introduced to various types of research designs and learn to be both consumers and producers of research. Program Structure

The Master's program is comprised of a total of 30 units. Typically students complete the program in 1.5 to 2 years. Two pathways are currently offered to meet individual needs: Pathway 1 is a fully online program designed for classroom teachers who completed an accredited post-baccalaureate credential program. These students complete 6 core classes and would potentially use 12 post-baccalaureate semester units to reach the 30 unit minimum required for the degree. Students may finish the program in three semesters. Pathway 2 is designed for credentialed classroom teachers who completed a credential program during their bachelor's degree or non-credentialed education-related professionals. These students also complete 6 fully online core classes as well as an additional 4 courses (12 units) that support their educational interests to reach the 30 unit minimum required for the degree.

Master’s + Licensure

Our master’s + licensure programs prepare preservice teachers to meet the preliminary special education licensure requirements for Oregon in either: K-12/Generalist or Early Intervention. Inservice teachers can complete coursework to meet the added endorsement requirements for these age groups, as well through our endorsement program.

Master’s Only (Non-Licensure)

The master’s only option is ideal for current teachers who are interested in pursuing advanced graduate training in special education and completing a program that is individualized and based on their interests and goals. This option is ideal for individuals with a bachelor’s degree who want to learn more about special education, but who do not necessarily want to pursue a career in teaching.

Endorsements (Non-Degree)

We have 3 endorsement options for currently licensed teachers including: reading intervention, special education, and early intervention/early childhood special education. Each of these endorsements can be completed in three terms of courses and a practicum.

Alternative Pathways to Licensure

The Teacher Apprenticeship Program offers an alternative pathway to special education licensure. It is designed exclusively for paraprofessionals who want to become licensed special education teachers. Admitted students will participate in a comprehensive program, including online coursework within the UIC special education department, apprenticeship in district schools, and a mentorship program with field experiences and university scholar supervision. Participants will earn a Professional Educator License (PEL) and a Learning Behavior Specialist I (LBS1) endorsement. The program offers ongoing employment within the district.

Program Components

Seven fully online synchronous courses in special education. Participation in courses with required fieldwork and student teaching, in which students will engage in hands-on teaching experiences within local schools, allowing them to engage directly with the communities they will serve. Participation in a continuous feedback mentor data cycle. - Apprenticeship experience with on-the-job training and mentoring. The program requires the completion of one application. Applicants will upload the required documents to the linked application form. - A personal statement outlining your interest in the program and commitment to education.

Online Programs

Most of the courses in the MA program are online (asynchronous) to accommodate the practicing teachers in the field. Financial Aid and Scholarships

Our students regularly receive scholarships to support their time in our teacher preparation programs. The College offers scholarships for newly-admitted and continuing graduate students, who have qualified credentials and a financial need. Several of these scholarships are geared toward individuals in special education programs. There may be graduate associateship positions (Graduate Teaching Associateship or Graduate Research Associateships) available at the Department or Program level. CHIME (Collaborative teaching for young and diverse children with high-intensity needs and multiple disabilities in blended environments) is a federally funded special education scholarship program that will prepare current teachers with an Illinois educators license to earn a master’s degree, an IL Learning Behavior Specialist (LBS1) endorsement, and the Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) approval. CHIME will provide students with a scholarship that consists of tuition, fees and a book stipend. The program will last two-years across five semesters with students taking two to three classes per semester. Grant opportunities for admitted MS students who are Special Education are available.

Accreditation
