Pariya Samandi, a Splunker based in San Jose, CA, had the opportunity to work directly on product design during her internship. Her responsibilities included conducting user research, prototyping, and testing to ensure that the product effectively met user needs. This involved close collaboration with engineers, product managers, and other designers to ensure that the features were user-friendly and technically feasible.

Michał Węgrzyn, a software engineer in Poland, contributed to Splunk's observability product during his internship.

Thomas, an intern, worked on the dashboard studio on the main Splunk search and data platform, specifically on the front-end. He said, “This is something that's going to be seen by the customers and could potentially add to revenue,” adding, “I'm actually adding value to the product."

Christina got to work with the SOAR team on an integration with eSight, drafting the engineering requirement documents, collecting reviews and feedback from stakeholders and was responsible for the implementation of designing storage collections and endpoints. She shares, “This project has been a really great learning experience for me because I've been able to really drive that whole part.”

Juan has worked on showcasing how leveraging AWS S3 can revolutionize lookup file replication in Splunk's Search Head Clusters where he identified current challenges with large CSV files and demonstrated how to start implementing a solution that improves efficiency and scalability.

These examples illustrate the diverse range of projects available to Splunkterns, allowing them to apply their skills, learn new technologies, and contribute meaningfully to Splunk's mission.

Vaishnavi Kotawar, now a software engineer in San Jose, CA, emphasized that her time as a Splunktern "prepared me for full-time work by providing practical skills, networking opportunities, and an understanding of company culture." This highlights the holistic nature of the program, which goes beyond technical training to equip interns with the soft skills necessary to thrive in a corporate environment.

Christina also called out, “There are always opportunities to develop skills in an area that you're looking to learn more in. That's not something that you get everywhere, which is why I love [Splunk]”.

Program Details: Structure and Opportunities

Splunk's internship program operates globally, with opportunities available in 11 offices across 6 countries and 8 functions. In North America, the program currently runs in 5 offices: San Francisco (CA), San Jose (CA), Plano (TX), McLean (VA), and Vancouver (Canada).

Internships in the United States typically last for 12-14 weeks, with interns working 40 hours per week over the summer. These internships are paid hourly. Non-US internships can range from 4 months to 1 year, depending on the scope of the work and the academic requirements of the respective country.

Splunkterns are valued for their voices, given a seat at the proverbial table, and respected for their contributions.

Students interested in becoming Splunkterns have several avenues for learning more and applying. Splunk's Global University Recruiting team actively engages with students and faculty at top colleges and universities worldwide, attending various campus events such as career fairs, tech talks, hackathons, and lunch & learns.

We start our campus tour in the fall and attend various university events (career fairs, tech talks, hackathons, lunch & learns, etc.) between September and February each year.

Applying online is also an option. Internship roles are posted on Splunk's Careers page and university career services pages, typically in early September. The hiring process continues through February, with US Splunkterns starting between mid-May to mid-June.
