Squash and Education Alliance Programs: Shaping Futures Through Squash
The Squash + Education Alliance (SEA) stands as a national umbrella organization with a powerful mission: to champion the creation, development, and enhancement of squash and education programs both within the United States and across the globe. SEA achieves its mission through strategic initiatives focused on growth, program quality, and student & alumni support.
A Holistic Approach to Youth Development
SEA launches and leads youth programs that combine squash, academics, mentoring, travel, college support and career readiness. With member programs extending across cities and six locations abroad, SEA reaches over 2,500 children, fostering a transformative impact on their lives. The intensive, year-round youth development model integrates squash instruction, academic tutoring, mentoring, travel, college preparation and support, and much more. Students from under-resourced communities engage with these programs from elementary or middle school through college graduation, attending practices and tutoring sessions multiple times a week during the school year and throughout much of the summer.
The Genesis of a Movement
The history of the Squash + Education Alliance (SEA) traces back to 1996 with the inception of SquashBusters in Boston. This pioneering after-school program ingeniously utilized squash as a catalyst for positive change in the lives of low-income students. The success of this model quickly led to its replication in Harlem, the Bronx, Philadelphia, and Chicago, extending squash, academic, and personal support to numerous students nationwide. These programs forged strong community partnerships with esteemed universities, including Harvard, Columbia, Yale, Northeastern, Fordham, and Johns Hopkins. Recognizing the need for centralized support and expansion, SEA was established in 2005 as an umbrella organization to bolster existing programs and launch new initiatives.
Growth and Expansion
SEA strategically partners with local leaders to initiate new programs in cities demonstrating the potential for sustainable and robust organizational growth. This collaborative approach ensures that new programs are well-positioned to thrive and make a lasting impact on the communities they serve. As the national umbrella organization, SEA's mission is to support the creation, development and improvement of squash and education programs across the United States and around the world. SEA has 23 member programs in cities across the country and world that enroll more than 2,000 students. Located in Baltimore, Boston, the Bronx, Harlem, Newark, New Haven, Philadelphia, Detroit, Cleveland, Chicago, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Denver, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Oakland, Hartford, and Wilmington, these nonprofit organizations provide intensive after-school, weekend and summer programming that include academics, squash, mentoring, community service, college placement and more.
Program Quality and Best Practices
SEA prioritizes program quality by identifying and promoting the adoption of its model's best practices. This is achieved through various avenues, including the sharing of information and ideas, metric-based evaluations of member programs, and professional development opportunities. By fostering a culture of continuous improvement, SEA ensures that its member programs adhere to the highest standards of excellence.

Empowering Students and Alumni
SEA is committed to providing comprehensive support to students and alumni through a range of initiatives. These include hosting squash tournaments and training camps, offering scholarships to summer academic programs, and organizing supplementary educational and career experiences. By investing in the long-term success of its participants, SEA empowers them to achieve their full potential. Students regularly volunteer in their communities, and travel to colleges and cities around the country.
716 Squash: A Case Study in Expansion
In September 2017, Hope Blinkoff Lynch, previously the Deputy Director of Baltimore SquashWise (Baltimore’s SEA program), returned to her home city to establish and lead 716 Squash. By the spring of 2018, 716 Squash had cultivated school partnerships with West Hertel Academy and West Buffalo Charter School, actively recruiting 4th and 5th grade students to join the program. In November 2018, after a thorough application and evaluation process, 716 Squash proudly became the 19th official member program of SEA.
The Urban Squash Model: A Deep Dive
The Squash + Education Alliance (SEA) is the umbrella organization for urban squash, the out of school youth development model that combines the sport of squash with academics, mentoring, community service, and college placement for public school students from low-income families. Urban squash’s intensive, year-round programming, which takes places after school, on the weekends and in the summer, engages students from the time they join in elementary or middle school until they graduate from college. Following an ‘inch wide, mile deep’ approach to youth development, SEA programs strive to have a transformative impact on the lives of their participants.
Key Pillars of the Urban Squash Model:
- Squash Instruction: Provides athletic training, discipline, and a healthy outlet for physical activity.
- Academic Tutoring: Offers individualized support to improve academic performance and foster a love of learning.
- Mentoring: Connects students with positive role models who provide guidance and support.
- Community Service: Instills a sense of civic responsibility and encourages students to give back to their communities.
- College Placement: Equips students with the knowledge and resources necessary to navigate the college application process and succeed in higher education.
The Impact of SEA Programs
SEA programs have demonstrated a remarkable track record of success, with 94% of graduates going on to college. This impressive statistic underscores the transformative impact of the organization's holistic approach to youth development. By providing comprehensive support and opportunities, SEA empowers students from under-resourced communities to overcome barriers and achieve their academic and personal goals.
