The P.E.O. Sisterhood, a nonprofit organization with a rich history of supporting women's education, offers the P.E.O. STAR Scholarship to recognize and reward outstanding young women for their achievements both inside and outside the classroom. This article delves into the specifics of the STAR Scholarship, its eligibility requirements, and its impact on the lives of aspiring female students.
P.E.O. Sisterhood: A Legacy of Educational Support
The P.E.O. Sisterhood has been instrumental in helping women pursue their educational goals. The organization has provided over $366 million in educational assistance to more than 113,000 women through six philanthropies and a foundation. This demonstrates the P.E.O. Sisterhood's commitment to making a difference in women's lives. The organization has brought together more than half a million women in the United States and Canada. These women are passionate about helping other women advance through education, while supporting and motivating them.
The P.E.O. STAR Scholarship: Recognizing Excellence
Established in 2009, the P.E.O. STAR Scholarship is a one-time $2,500 scholarship awarded to graduating high school women who demonstrate exceptional qualities. This scholarship aims to support women pursuing higher education at accredited postsecondary institutions in the United States or Canada. The P.E.O. STAR Scholarship is a testament to the P.E.O. Sisterhood's dedication to empowering women through education.

Named and Endowed P.E.O. STAR Scholarships
The P.E.O. STAR Scholarship program offers opportunities for individuals and chapters to create a lasting legacy through named and endowed scholarships.
Named P.E.O. STAR Scholarship
A named P.E.O. STAR Scholarship is a one-time scholarship that can be named in honor or memory of an individual or chapter. Funds designated for a named scholarship must be received by the P.E.O. Foundation. The P.E.O. STAR Scholarship Board of Trustees selects each named P.E.O. STAR scholarship recipient using the same criteria as for the selection of other recipients. Each named STAR scholarship is in the same amount as other P.E.O. STAR Scholarships. Recipient(s) receiving named scholarships are advised of this special designation when the formal announcement of P.E.O. STAR Scholarships is made.
Endowed P.E.O. STAR Scholarship
An endowed P.E.O. STAR Scholarship may be established in honor or memory of an individual or chapter and is supported by special endowed funds held for the P.E.O. STAR Scholarship by the P.E.O. Foundation. The P.E.O. STAR Scholarship Board of Trustees selects recipients of endowed scholarships using the same criteria as for the selection of recipients. The donor or family most often selects the name designation. Income only is used for scholarships. When the income from the principal is equivalent to the amount designated for a P.E.O. STAR Scholarship, distribution from this fund will be made. Income is accrued until that time. Additional contributions may be added to the principal of this fund. Each scholarship awarded from an endowed fund is in the same amount as other P.E.O. STAR Scholarships. Recipients of endowed scholarships are advised of this special designation when the formal announcement of the P.E.O. STAR Scholarships is made.
It is important to note that a one-time gift of USD $2,500 for a Named Scholarship or establishment of an Endowed STAR Scholarship in honor or memory of an individual or chapter does not ensure a candidate from the chapter will be selected. The P.E.O. STAR Scholarship Board of Trustees follows specific procedures and general information when choosing qualified candidates.
Financial Considerations
Funds from the P.E.O. STAR Scholarship may be paid directly to the recipient or to the accredited educational institution, depending on the recipient's preference. Typically, funds used for tuition and fees or required books and equipment are non-taxable for income tax purposes. However, funds used for room and board might be reportable income for tax purposes. Recipients and their families are responsible for deciding how to use the funds and for any taxes incurred.
