Stata Student License: Features and Limitations
Stata is a powerful statistical application widely employed by researchers across the behavioral, health, and social sciences. For students venturing into statistical analysis, understanding the features and limitations of the Stata student license is crucial. This article provides a comprehensive overview, drawing upon available information to clarify what students can expect from their Stata license.
Stata Editions and Licensing Options
Stata offers various editions tailored to different needs and computing capabilities. These include Stata/MP, Stata/SE, and Stata/BE, and even a "Small Stata" version. Each edition differs in the size of the dataset it can handle. Selecting the right license type ensures students have access to the tools they need without unnecessary costs.
Single-User License
A single-user license for Stata is tied to a specific, identified user. This means the license is for one individual and cannot be shared.
Annual License
An annual license provides access to Stata for one year, starting from the date the order is processed. Renewals are straightforward, allowing continuous access to the software.
Perpetual License
Student perpetual licenses are available, offering long-term access to a specific version of Stata. However, these licenses do not include maintenance, meaning updates to newer versions are not included.

Network License
For institutions or labs, network licenses allow multiple users to access Stata simultaneously. The minimum network size is a 2-user license. Existing network licenses can be expanded to accommodate more users at a reduced per-user charge, provided the license is for the current version of Stata.
Site License
A site license provides an entire university with access to the most current version of Stata. A site license has only one serial number to maintain, and usage is not monitored throughout the year. Access to Stata on the Wharton Research Data Services (WRDS) cloud environment is available to all site license users that subscribe to the WRDS service.
Student Lab License
A Student Lab license is designed for student use in classrooms or by faculty for teaching purposes. It is not intended for research, government, or corporate training environments. The minimum size for a Student Lab license is 10 users. If licensed for concurrent use, the Student Lab license can be installed on a network or server. The Student Lab license may also be installed on individual machines or student laptops in a bring your own device environment up to the number of users allowed by the license. The Student Lab license is an annual license, and annual licenses ensure all users have access to the latest version of Stata.
Key Stata Editions and Their Limitations
Stata/SE (Standard Edition)
Many universities, such as LUC, offer a site license for Stata/SE, the standard edition. This version is well-suited for handling mid-sized datasets.
- Dataset Size: Stata/SE can analyze datasets with up to 32,767 variables and up to 2.14 billion observations.
- Independent Variables: It allows for a maximum of 10,998 independent variables.
- Availability: Stata/SE is commonly available to faculty, students, and staff engaged in academic research.
Stata/MP (Multiprocessing Edition)
Stata/MP is the fastest and largest edition of Stata. It is designed to take full advantage of computers with multiple cores or processors.

- Speed: Stata/MP is significantly faster, especially with more than two cores or processors.
- Hardware Compatibility: It is compatible with Intel, AMD, and Apple silicon processors.
- Scalability: Stata/MP can utilize all available cores on your machine (up to 64). It also supports a vast number of observations, limited only by the computer's hardware capabilities.
Stata/BE (Basic Edition)
Stata/SE and Stata/BE differ only in the dataset size that each can analyze. Stata/SE allows more independent variables than Stata/BE (up to 798).
Small Stata
"Small Stata" is limited to analyzing datasets with a maximum of 99 variables on approximately 1,200 observations. Small Stata can have at most 98 right-hand-side variables in a model.
Upgrading and Maintenance
A single-user license may be upgraded to a new edition of Stata for an additional cost, for example, from Stata/SE to Stata/MP. Purchasing multiple copies of Stata under a volume discount does not mean that the copies are connected. Maintenance is an annual or multiyear purchase that ensures you maintain access to the current version of Stata software. Maintenance includes access to StataNow. Student perpetual licenses do not include maintenance. A network license may be upgraded to a new edition of Stata for an additional cost, for example, from Stata/SE to Stata/MP.
Obtaining a Student License
Students are generally eligible for discounted Stata licenses. The process typically involves:
Selecting License Type: Choose "Educational" in the initial step of the purchasing process and then "Students" in the subsequent step.

Proof of Student Status: Provide documentation verifying student enrollment. Acceptable forms of proof include:
- Screenshot of the current course schedule.
- University-issued student ID card.
- Tuition statements.
- Letters of enrollment.
Electronic Delivery: The software is usually delivered via electronic software download.
For students in programs like a two-year graduate program, it may not be necessary to upgrade the Stata license during the program's duration, depending on the scale of the data they will be working with.
Important Considerations
- License Term: Be aware of the license term, especially for annual licenses, which begin on the day the order is processed.
- Concurrent Use: If a Student Lab license is licensed for concurrent use, it can be installed on a network or server.
- Proof of Eligibility: Always have proof of student status readily available when purchasing or renewing a student license.
- Software Updates: Maintenance ensures access to StataNow.
