To capitalize on these opportunities, many students are pursuing STEM-related majors. Recognizing the financial burden of higher education, various organizations and companies offer STEM scholarships to help students minimize their reliance on student loans. Jobs in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math fields (STEM) are expected to grow 11% between 2020 and 2030. Even though STEM jobs tend to pay more than jobs in other industries, students still want to minimize how much they have to borrow in student loans. Many companies seek to recruit gifted STEM majors out of college, jump-starting their careers.

Understanding STEM and STEAM

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. There are several niche fields encompassed within the STEM umbrella, like machine learning, astrophysics, mechanical engineering, and more. Students often start with a broader major like biology before focusing on a specific area, like genetics. Recognizing the importance of creativity and innovation, the concept of STEAM has emerged, integrating Art into the traditional STEM disciplines. The Illinois Tenth Congressional District STEAM Scholar Program, for example, connects students interested in science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics with hands-on learning experiences. Since 2017, the alliantgroup Blue Heart Fund has awarded over $1 million in scholarships to students across the country pursuing a career in STEaM (science, technology, engineering, accounting,and math).

Types of STEM Scholarships

STEM scholarships are awards that focus on students pursuing STEM fields. Students must dedicate themselves to science, technology, engineering, or mathematics to qualify for these scholarships. Specific scholarship awards are open to all STEM fields, while others focus on particular areas. For example, you could apply for a technology scholarship, a biomedical scholarship, or civil engineering scholarship, etc. In general, there are two main types of scholarships: merit awards and need-based awards. Merit scholarships do not look at a student's finances, only their academic, artistic, athletic or other achievements. Need-based awards often also consider those factors, but will include a student’s financial need as a requirement.

  • AMS Graduate Fellowships: The AMS Fellowship Program is a source of unique opportunities for outstanding students looking to pursue graduate education in the fields of atmospheric sciences, chemistry, computer sciences, engineering, environmental sciences, hydrology, mathematics, oceanography, and physics. The fellowship awards $26,000, and applicants must be entering their first year of graduate school in the fall of the year.
  • Quad City Engineering and Science Council Scholarship (QCESC): Since 1994, the Quad City Engineering and Science Council has been providing one-time scholarships to high school seniors pursuing STEM studies. The scholarship amount is $2,500.
  • Choose Ohio First STEMM Scholarship: STEM scholarships are designed for students interested in studying computer science, engineering, healthcare science and more. The scholarship amount is $20,000.
  • (ISC)² Graduate Scholarship Program: This program is available for students in a graduate or PhD program with a 3.5 GPA. Awards range between $1,000 and $5,000.
  • Progress Software Mary Székely Scholarship: This $10,000 scholarship is renewable for up to four years, but only Massachusetts residents are eligible.
  • HBCU Week x AstraZeneca Scholarship: This scholarship is worth $25,000 and is exclusively for students attending a Historically Black College or University (HBCU).
  • Science Ambassador Scholarship: This scholarship provides a free ride for a woman interested in a STEM degree, covering four years of university.
  • Lockheed Martin STEM Scholarship: This scholarship is given to 200 students every year, and each award is worth $10,000. Students need to have a 2.5 GPA or higher and demonstrate financial need.
  • Generation Google Scholarship: This scholarship offers a $10,000 USD or $5,000 CAD award and is only available for full-time students.
  • Edith Nourse Rogers STEM Scholarship: The Edith Nourse Rogers Science Technology Engineering Math (STEM) Scholarship allows eligible Veterans using the Post-9/11 GI Bill or dependents using the Fry Scholarship to get added benefits. This scholarship provides up to 9 months (or $30,000) of benefits for training in high-demand fields.

Scholarships for Specific Groups

Many organizations are dedicated to promoting diversity and inclusion in STEM fields. As such, there are scholarships specifically for women and minorities. For example, the Society of Women Engineers offers dozens of different scholarships for female students. The Blacks at Microsoft Scholarship program provides awards for African-American students who are majoring in a STEM field. The SVCF Latinos in Technology Scholarship is given to Latino students who are interested in STEM. Asian American STEM Student Scholarships, Black STEM Student Scholarships, Native American STEM Student Scholarships, South Asian STEM Student Scholarships, and Women in STEM Scholarships are also available.

Finding and Applying for STEM Scholarships

With myriad STEM scholarships available, it can be easy to get overwhelmed. Whether you’re applying to college or are already enrolled, you can find STEM scholarships. These may be available through the general financial aid department or via a specific department. Ask your academic advisor if they have any suggestions. You can also contact the financial aid department and ask them how to maximize your awards. Most scholarships you are going to find will be intended for students who are either incoming college students or are already enrolled in an undergraduate degree program. It’s considerably more difficult to find scholarships for graduate or PhD students.

Tips for Applying

Applying for a STEM scholarship is like applying for any other kind of scholarship. The essay portion may ask questions related to your interest in STEM. This is where you can highlight your passion. If you have to provide a recommendation letter, choose a teacher who can speak to your knowledge of STEM. Ideally, this teacher should also know about your enthusiasm for STEM. Remember to give the person you are asking a few weeks notice so they have enough time to write a high-quality letter. To maximize your chances of success, consider the following tips:

  • Apply Early and Often: High school students should apply early and often. The earlier you begin using these resources- scholarships, financial aid offices- the more money you'll be able to get out of them. Continuously seek new financial aid opportunities so that you don't miss out on any offers.
  • Draft a Compelling Scholarship Essay: STEM college students can make their application stand out by impressive writing skills. The point is mainly to showcase your journey towards an education in STEM. What motivated you? What challenges have you overcome?
  • Stay Organized: Keep track of what documents you need for each application- some may ask for grade transcripts, letters of recommendation, or other records. Consider keeping a timetable or calendar to note down the deadlines for all the applications.
  • Read All Requirements: The eligibility requirements for scholarships will vary, but they will always be displayed in the description.

Resources for STEM Students

In addition to scholarships, several resources are available to support STEM students:

  • National Science Foundation: The National Science Foundation is organized by the United States government and aims to support scientific interest, education, and pursuits at all levels. The NSF offers different ways to procure funding for research.
  • NASA Internships and Fellowships: NASA is another well-funded organization that can help jump-start your career in STEM. High school students can find internships for their STEM major, and graduate-level students can apply for fellowship opportunities.
  • STEMGradStudents.science.gov: Graduate students studying STEM can also access STEMGradStudents.science.gov for exclusive STEM scholarships.

Many organizations, companies and schools know that the STEM fields tend to be disproportionately white and male. STEAM Scholar Programs

WHAT IS THE STEAM SCHOLAR PROGRAM? The Illinois Tenth Congressional District STEAM Scholar Program is an exciting educational opportunity launched by Congressman Brad Schneider in 2018 for high school students in our community. The program aims to connect highly-motivated students interested in science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics with hands-on learning experiences throughout our district. In the fall, students selected to participate in the STEAM Scholars program will have the opportunity to join Congressman Schneider on visits to four STEAM-related businesses and facilities during the 2025-2026 school year. On these visits, students will have the chance to participate in discussions with local employees, business owners, and educators, and learn more about the STEAM career opportunities in our backyard. WHO CAN BE A STEAM SCHOLAR? This program is open to all rising Sophomores and Juniors who live in or attend high schools located within Illinois’s Tenth Congressional District. Due to space constraints, we will only be selecting two applicants per high school for participation in this competitive program. HOW DO I APPLY?
