Steven M. Greer: Education, Career, and Contributions to Ufology
Steven Macon Greer (born in 1955) is an American ufologist and retired physician. He is best known for his work in the field of ufology, particularly his efforts to disclose classified government information regarding extraterrestrial life. Greer's career spans medicine and ufology, marked by his educational achievements, founding of organizations dedicated to extraterrestrial research, and advocacy for open government regarding UFO phenomena.
Early Life and Education
Born in Charlotte, North Carolina, Greer's interest in UFOs reportedly began in childhood, with his first sighting occurring at the age of eight. He later reported another sighting at age 35. Greer's academic pursuits led him to a B.S. degree in biology from Appalachian State University in 1982. He then pursued a medical degree, receiving his M.D. from the James H. Quillen College of Medicine of East Tennessee State University in 1987, where he was also inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.
Prior to his medical studies, Greer received Transcendental Meditation teacher’s training and worked as a director of a meditation center. In 1989, he obtained his Virginia medical license and subsequently worked as a trauma surgeon before retiring from emergency medicine in 1988 to focus on ufology.
Career in Medicine
Dr. Steven Greer, MD, is a preventive medicine physician. He holds medical licenses in multiple states, including New York (1998-2027), Ohio (2018-2027), and Florida (1998-2026, 2019-2026). He also held a Pennsylvania State Medical License from 1999 to 2002. As a Doximity member, Greer is part of a network of over two million verified healthcare professionals.

Ufological Career: CSETI and the Disclosure Project
In 1990, Greer founded the Center for the Study of Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (CSETI). CSETI aimed to establish a diplomatic and research-based initiative for contacting extraterrestrial civilizations. The organization defined CE-5, or 'close encounters of the fifth kind,' as human-initiated contact and communication with extraterrestrial life. CSETI has claimed to have over 3,000 confirmed reports of UFO sightings by pilots and over 4,000 reports of what they describe as landing traces. The organization uses RAMITs ('Rapid Mobilisation Investigative Teams') to investigate landing sites.
In 1993, Greer launched the Disclosure Project, which sought to disclose the government's knowledge of UFOs and extraterrestrial life. The project also aimed to grant amnesty to whistle-blowers from government projects willing to share sensitive information about UFOs.
Greer held a press conference at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., in May 2001. This event featured retired government, military, intelligence, and corporate witnesses who testified about the existence of extraterrestrial life and classified government projects. The event reached a global audience through real-time streaming and media coverage.
Greer has worked to unite scientists and leaders to develop clean energy technology systems, aiming to shift civilization away from fossil fuels. He has appeared on networks such as BBC, CBS, The Discovery Channel, Thrive, and The History Channel (Ancient Aliens series). He has also conducted briefings for government officials, media interviews, and lectures on UFOs and extraterrestrial life.
Documentaries and Publications
Greer has authored several books and created documentaries throughout his career. His 2001 book, Disclosure: Military and Government Witnesses Reveal the Greatest Secrets in Modern History, compiled testimonies from government insiders regarding the government's alleged cover-up of extraterrestrial knowledge and secret programs with the potential to resolve pollution issues.

His 2006 book, Hidden Truth, Forbidden Knowledge, features personal stories of UFO sightings and disclosures based on conversations with over 450 government insiders, including former CIA Director R. James Woolsey, along with ideas such as remote viewing. His 2013 book, Extraterrestrial Contact, provides an overview of UFO sightings and evidence supporting their existence.
Greer co-produced the 2013 documentary Sirius, detailing his research and hypotheses regarding extraterrestrial life, government cover-ups, and close encounters of the fifth kind. The film, directed by Amardeep Kaleka and narrated by Thomas Jane, covers Greer's book Hidden Truth, Forbidden Knowledge. Sirius features interviews with former government and military officials and depicts a six-inch human skeleton known as the Atacama skeleton, initially claimed to be an alien skeleton. However, genetic evidence later confirmed that it was human, with genetic markers found in indigenous women from the Chilean region of South America.
In 2017, Greer was featured in the crowdfunded documentary Unacknowledged, which led to a companion book of the same title and became a popular documentary on platforms like iTunes.
In 2020, Greer released Close Encounters of the Fifth Kind: Contact has Begun, a documentary written and directed by Michael Mazzola, featuring Greer, Daniel Sheehan, Jan Harzan, and Russell Targ.

Public Perception and Criticism
Steven M. Greer's credibility is a subject of debate within the ufology community. Some consider him a credible figure due to his research and advocacy, while others criticize his claims as lacking sufficient evidence. Greer has faced criticism for his controversial claims, lack of verifiable evidence, and promotion of pseudoscientific practices like remote viewing and energy healing in relation to UFO phenomena. Despite these criticisms, Greer remains a prominent figure in ufology, continuing to advocate for the disclosure of government information on extraterrestrial life and advanced energy technologies.
