Need-Based Aid

External Scholarship Resources

In addition to university-specific scholarships, numerous external resources can help students find and apply for additional funding.

  • FastWEB: A large and comprehensive scholarship database on the Internet.
  • College Scorecard: An online tool for consumers to compare the cost and value of higher education institutions in the United States. It displays data in five areas: cost, graduation rate, employment rate, average amount borrowed, and loan default rate.
  • American Foreign Service Association: Offers various scholarship opportunities with different deadlines.
  • Breakthrough Junior Challenge: A STEM video contest where students create short videos explaining challenging concepts in physics, mathematics, or the life sciences.
  • Brighter Star funds: Formerly known as the DCF Scholarship, Brighter Star funds are part of Wisconsin’s independent living program and are available to support the postsecondary costs for individuals with foster care experience. This includes educational and training programs.

Important Considerations

  • Application Deadlines: Pay close attention to application deadlines for both university-specific and external scholarships. Missing a deadline can mean missing out on potential funding.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Carefully review the eligibility criteria for each scholarship to ensure you meet the requirements.
  • Scholarship Stacking: Understand how outside scholarships may affect your institutional aid. If the outside scholarship must be applied towards tuition only, the sum of institutional aid and external scholarships cannot exceed tuition for the semester or year in which it is offered. If your total does exceed tuition, then your institutional aid (merit and need-based grants) will be reduced to make room for the outside awards.
  • Thanking Donors: Be prepared to thank the donors who make your financial aid possible.
