Stony Brook University Logo: A History of Visual Identity

Stony Brook University (SBU), a public research university in Stony Brook, New York, has undergone several transformations in its visual identity since its establishment. From its humble beginnings as the State University College on Long Island (SUCOLI) to its current status as a major research institution, the university's logo has evolved to reflect its changing mission and aspirations. This article explores the history of the Stony Brook University logo, tracing its evolution and highlighting the key design elements that have shaped its visual representation.

Early Years: From Soundsmen to Warriors

The State University of New York at Stony Brook was established in Oyster Bay in 1957, as the State University College on Long Island (SUCOLI). During the late 1950s, when the Stony Brook campus was located in Oyster Bay, the University’s teams were known as the Soundsmen. From 1963 through 1966, the athletic teams competed as the Warriors.

The Birth of the Seawolves

July 1, 1994, marks an auspicious occasion in Stony Brook history: the birth of the Seawolf. In an effort to create an exciting new team identity in line with our move to the Division I level, then-Stony Brook President John H. Marburger III proclaimed a new team nickname: the Seawolves in February of 1994. The Stony Brook Patriots officially became the Stony Brook Seawolves on July 1. A year later, Wolfie, our new mascot, made his glorious debut.

The Seawolves Logo (1998-2007)

The Seawolves logo, used by the club from 1998 to 2007, was very bright and or tame. The blue, gray, and Ted combination of colors made the straight and sharp lines of the graphical part and the logotype look powerful and energetic. The logo, which was placed a bit diagonally, featured a graphical image of the Wolf, placed above the dark blue banner in a thick red frame, with a light gray and white lettering written on it in two-level. The upper level featured “Stony Brook” inscription in an extended sans-serif typeface, and the bottom - an enlarged “Seawolves” in a boldly stylized font with a light and dark gray and blue shades.

Modernization and Rebranding

To signify our transformation and provide a dynamic foundation for growth, we have refreshed and modernized our logo and brand identity. The key design element is a shield, which symbolizes strength - a message we are in an excellent position to convey at this time in Stony Brook University history.

The logo change is part of a larger effort to re-brand the university. “The key element in the new mark is a shield, which symbolizes strength,” the message from Stanley, Kaushansky and Assanis says.

The Current Logo (2008-Present)

The current Stony Brook Seawolves logo has been in use since 2008. Here, there are the block “S” and “B” positioned one above the other. Although they overlap slightly, this does not damage legibility in any way.

Milton Glaser's Contribution

Milton Glaser, designer of such iconic emblems as the ubiquitous “I love NY,” the green label for Brooklyn Brewery and Bob Dylan’s multicolored hair on a 1975 poster for Columbia Records, was also responsible for the compilation of circle, stars and rays that Stony Brook University wore over the last decade. Glaser said his original design signified the idea of enlightenment, illumination and the pursuit of knowledge. Aside from the logo, Glaser worked with Kenny on numerous design projects for the university, leading the University Council to award him the University Medal in 2005, the highest honor given to individuals who have provided service to the university.

Despite those positive aspects, Glaser criticized the new design for its unoriginality. “I have a feeling that in the academic community, there’s a reluctance to be overly assertive,” he said.

Stony Brook Medicine Branding

An equally significant aspect of this branding initiative is the development of a new, overarching brand for the Stony Brook University medical enterprise: Stony Brook Medicine. Stony Brook Medicine integrates and elevates all of Stony Brook’s health-related initiatives: education, research and patient care. It includes the five schools - Dental Medicine, Health Technology and Management, Medicine, Nursing, and Social Welfare - as well as Stony Brook University Hospital, Stony Brook Long Island Childrens’ Hospital, our major centers and institutes, programs, clinics and the 35 community-based healthcare settings for our entire institution.
