Student Fares on Flights: A Comprehensive Guide
The college experience often involves late nights studying, tight budgets, and unforgettable memories. An often-overlooked advantage of being a student is access to various discounts, including those on airfare. This article explores student flight discounts, examining which airlines offer them, how they function, and whether they are truly beneficial.
Navigating Student Flight Discounts
Student flight discounts can be a valuable tool for budget-conscious travelers. However, it's essential to understand the intricacies of these programs to determine if they provide genuine savings.
North American Airlines
The landscape of student flight discounts among major North American carriers is varied. While some airlines have experimented with student discounts in the past, the availability of such programs can change.
- United Airlines: United Airlines offers a discount for travelers aged 18-23 through its mobile app. By selecting the "Young adult travel (ages 18-23)" option when booking a flight, eligible travelers can receive 5% off all fares, excluding premium economy, Business, or First Class tickets. This discount applies to all routes United flies.
- Air Canada: Air Canada provides a student discount in the form of a flight pass. These passes offer six one-way flight credits valid for a year at a fixed price that varies based on origin and destination. These flight passes require a valid student ID. The tickets are for Economy Standard, which includes a flight credit if you cancel and changes for a fee.
- Other North American Airlines: Some airlines, such as Spirit, Frontier, and Hawaiian, have previously offered student flight discounts, but these are not currently active. Other major North American carriers, including American, Delta, Southwest, JetBlue, Alaska, and WestJet, do not currently offer student flight discounts.
European Airlines
Several European airlines offer student discounts, although they often come with specific conditions and verification processes.
- Air France: Air France advertises discounted student rates with proof of enrollment and includes two checked bags. Selecting “Student (18-29 years)” on the booking page should reveal the discount.
- Iberia: Iberia's student discount program, Iberia Joven, offers 10% off bookings and 15% off group bookings for individuals aged 16 to 30. Enrollment requires creating an Iberia Plus account and providing passport information for age verification.
- KLM: Similar to Air France, KLM offers student discounts, but finding the discounted fares can be challenging. EU residents can select "Youth (18-24)" in the passenger field to potentially access a youth fare.
- Lufthansa: Lufthansa's student discount applies to flights originating within the US and offers savings on flights to Europe. It includes flexibility with booking and an extra checked bag. These fares are automatically reduced when searching through the student offer page.
- SAS: SAS offers youth tickets for individuals aged 12-25. These fares can result in significant savings without requiring special sign-ups.
- Turkish Airlines: Turkish Airlines provides up to 10% off international and 20% off domestic flights within Turkey, along with extra baggage and free changes. Verification of student status is required through their student discount page. To benefit from the student flight ticket advantages, students must be Miles&Smiles members. The Miles&Smiles membership number must be entered when completing the “Student Discount Application Form”. Turkish citizen students creating/logging-into a Miles&Smiles account and studying in Türkiye are required to select the "Student" option in the "Personal Information" field in their accounts. After this field is selected, controls will be provided through the system to confirm the student status. Persons whose student status has been approved may begin to enjoy student flight ticket advantages. The online application form must include the Miles&Smiles membership number, name, surname and date of birth. In addition, applicants must upload a student ID or other official document that confirms their status. Student ID cards (university, college, high school, language school, etc.), ISIC cards, student certificates or transcripts may be uploaded to the online application form. The application will accommodate documents in any language, but languages other than Turkish or English may take longer to process. Students aged 12 to 34 may benefit from student fare advantages. You must be in this age range at the time of application. The information on the online application form, the Miles&Smiles membership account and uploaded student ID/document must be the same. Advantages are available to individuals who have an ID card or student certificate signed or approved by a competent authority. The student's institution information and/or emblem, name, surname, and date of birth must be included on any official student identity card or document. The name, surname and date of birth must be clear on the uploaded student ID/document. The ID/document must have a valid wet signature, label or seal issued by the relevant authorities. For tickets purchased through online channels, students must log into their Miles&Smiles account and select “student” as the passenger type at the time of ticket selection. The definition of studentship loses its validity at the end of one year. To continue to benefit from the advantages, a new application must be made at the end of one year. For transactions made through Turkish Airlines online channels, the discount and the discounted fare can be seen at the bottom of the page, after the flight selection. The discount is 15% for round-trip and one-way flights on international transit flights and 10% for round-trip and one-way flights departing from or departing from TR/ECN or arriving at TR/ECN. The discount does not apply to taxes and the discount rate may vary depending on the route, class, date, etc. There is 40 kg baggage allowance for tickets purchased within the student passenger type. The baggage allowance is 2x23 kg for flights with the per piece concept. The longest length of stay between outbound and return flights is 12 months. The first change is free of charge for tickets purchased with the student flight ticket discount. However, fare differences arising from fare class differences may be charged. This advantage is valid only for scheduled flights operated by Turkish Airlines. It is not valid for AJet flights, Turkish Airlines codeshare flights and Star Alliance partner airline flights. If there is more than one passenger in the PNR, the benefits are only valid if all passengers on the ticket have student status. Promotional fares are not valid for group reservations. Rights under the campaign may not be transferred. The original of the ID or document uploaded to the Student Discount Application Form must be presented during the check-in process if requested. A photo or photocopy of the card/document will not be accepted. If it is determined that the passenger is not eligible for the discount, they will not be permitted to travel. Student advantages can not be combined with any award ticket usage. Student flight ticket discount fares may not be combined with other Turkish Airlines campaigns and discounts. Turkish Airlines reserves the right to take legal action against those concerned in the event of any rule violations. Turkish Airlines reserves the right to change the campaign terms and conditions, definitions, and other information, and to cancel the campaign.
