Creative Student of the Month Bulletin Board Ideas

Bulletin boards can be a powerful tool to enhance classroom culture, recognize student achievement, and create an engaging learning environment. While the quest for the "perfect" bulletin board can sometimes feel overwhelming, remember that the goal is to create a space that celebrates students and their work. Here are some ideas for creating "Student of the Month" bulletin boards, incorporating student work, and promoting a positive classroom environment.

Embracing Student-Created Content

One of the most effective ways to create a meaningful bulletin board is to involve students in the process. Instead of relying solely on pre-packaged materials or teacher-created designs, consider empowering students to contribute their own artwork, projects, and ideas. Not only does this approach save teachers time and effort, but it also fosters a sense of ownership and pride among students.

Student Work Hall of Fame

Showcase student work by creating a "Student Work Hall of Fame" to display favorite assignments. This allows you to keep favorite assignments displayed and gives students goals to strive for. A bulletin board can display lots of it, though you might want a shelf too if you have some 3D work or full papers you’d like students to be able to snag and read.

All About Me

Kick off the first day of school with a "get-to-know-you" session and an art lesson. Have students draw a self-portrait and attach some basic facts that introduce them to the whole class. This can be a fun way to involve students. You could use handprints of the students to symbolize their commitment to the rules.

Celebrating Student of the Month

Recognizing students for their efforts and achievements is a great way to build classroom community and motivate learners. A "Student of the Month" bulletin board can be a powerful tool for acknowledging students who have demonstrated exceptional effort, growth, or achievement.

Designating the Bulletin Board

Dedicate a bulletin board to recognizing the student of the month. Give students the opportunity to share some information about them. While it is great to allow students to answer some questions or fill out a questionnaire, make sure not to overwhelm them with too many questions.

The Selection Process

There are various ways to select the student of the month. You can have the students vote on who they think best meets the month’s criteria. Another option is for you to choose one on your own by carefully selecting someone who has demonstrated that month’s value.

Recognition and Rewards

Recognizing them with a certificate is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate them in front of their classmates. It is also such a nice keepsake.

Giving students extra privileges is not only a great way to celebrate the student, it is also a great way to motivate other students to want to be next.

Write a short letter to your student telling them why you choose them. Better yet, have their classmates write a short note telling him or her what makes them special.

Tips for Creating Effective Bulletin Boards

Creating eye-catching and engaging bulletin boards doesn't have to be a daunting task. Here are some practical tips to help you bring your bulletin board ideas to life:

Start with a Solid Foundation

If you’re using paper for your bulletin board, pin it on the board the day before you staple it. This will help it hang flat and make it easier for you to decorate. Using fabric as a bulletin board background is also an option. Unlike paper, fabric doesn’t rip or tear easily and automatically lays flat. Since it’s more durable, you can redo your bulletin board more often before you need to replace the background.

Embellish with Borders

Sure, you could use just one border - but why not use two? Doubling up borders adds extra texture and color. Try using three borders for even more texture and visual interest. If you have extra border material, don’t cut it off - you (or another teacher) might want to reuse it in the future. Fold any extra under so it’s ready to go next time you need it.

Pull it Together

You’ve got a border, a background, and a theme. But how do you get straight lines and picture-perfect angles? Before you staple everything on, save yourself some trouble and pin it to the board with thumbtacks or sticky tack. You’ll be able to see what it looks like and fix any mistakes before committing to placement.

Think Outside the Bulletin Board

Are there any other blank spots in your classroom? Spots like the front of back or doors make perfect canvases for your next best bulletin board idea.

Don't Stress

Remember the KISS method: Keep It Simple, Silly. Teaching is hard work, and should always take priority over classroom decorations. Students aren’t going to care if letters aren’t perfectly laser cut or if pictures hang slightly to the side. Focus on supporting them in their learning and make sure they’re developing necessary skills. The rest is just an added bonus!

Diverse and Inclusive Displays

Creating a classroom environment that celebrates diversity and promotes inclusion is essential. Bulletin boards can be a powerful tool for showcasing diverse perspectives, highlighting contributions from underrepresented groups, and fostering a sense of belonging for all students.

Heritage Month Features

While of course I believe we need to present our students with diverse books, written by authors with a range of perspectives, all year long every year, heritage months provide a fun chance to specially feature authors from your library you want students to know. With that in mind, I’ve designed free interactive displays for you for Hispanic Heritage Month, Native American Heritage Month, Black History Month, Women’s History Month, AAPI Heritage Month, and Pride Month. Each features short bios of a variety of creators, along with QR codes to help student go deeper. You can feature them in rotation, or even build up a whole wall throughout the year, adding more and more creators while still keeping up your features from the past months.
