NMU Student Portal Guide: Navigating MyNMU and Beyond

This guide provides a comprehensive overview of the Northern Michigan University (NMU) student portal, MyNMU, and other essential online resources. It covers everything from registration to accessing financial aid information and understanding program requirements.

Accessing and Utilizing MyNMU

MyNMU serves as the central hub for NMU students to access various important information and complete essential tasks. These include:

  • Class schedules
  • Grades
  • Transcripts
  • Financial aid information
  • Registration

Activating Your MyUser Account

Upon admission to NMU, students can activate their MyUser account and access MyNMU to finalize their enrollment.

Navigating the MyNMU Interface

The MyNMU interface is designed to be user-friendly. Here's a breakdown of key features:

  • Registration Tile: This tile is crucial for course registration and related tasks.
  • Preparing for Registration: Located within the Registration tile, this section allows students to view their registration status, check for holds, review earned hours, and find their assigned registration time.
  • Register for Classes: This link becomes active on your assigned registration day and time, allowing you to enroll in courses.
  • Browse Classes: Use this link to explore course offerings and plan your registration in advance.
  • View Registration Information: Access your past registration history and schedules.

Course Registration: A Step-by-Step Guide

Registering for courses is a key function of MyNMU. Registration for the fall and summer semesters typically begins in mid-March, while winter semester registration starts in late October. Specific dates and times are posted on the Registration Week Schedule and are assigned based on the number of credits earned. Graduate, post-baccalaureate, seniors, and vocational students register first, followed by juniors, sophomores, and returning freshmen. New freshmen and transfer students register during the new student orientation program. Summer sessions have open enrollment.

The Registration Screen

The registration screen is divided into three main panels:

  • (A) Find Classes, Enter CRNs, and Schedule and Options: This section allows you to search for courses, enter Course Reference Numbers (CRNs) directly, and view schedule options.
  • (B) Schedule Information: View your schedule in either a calendar or list format.
  • (C) Registration Summary: This section summarizes your selected courses and allows you to submit your registration, waitlist courses, or drop courses.

Registering for Courses: Search vs. CRN

You can register for courses using two primary methods:

  1. Searching for Courses: In section (A), select a subject or multiple subjects to search for all courses offered within those areas. You can also enter a specific course number if you have one in mind. After the search, you can review available options and filter results using the categories in the first row or the gear icon.
  2. Entering CRNs: If you know the specific CRN for a course, you can enter it directly in section (A).

You will not be able to add a course that is full or only has reserved seats available.

Completing Your Registration

Once you find a class that works, click "ADD." The course will be added to your summary (section C) with a "Pending" status. To finalize your registration, click "Submit." All classes with the action "Web Registered" that are submitted will attempt to register.

Important Considerations:

  • Remove: Removes the course from your summary.
  • Waitlist: Adds you to the waitlist for the course (if available). If you receive an invitation to register for a waitlisted course, return to this screen and change "Waitlist" to "Web Register."
  • Drop Using Web: Drops you from the course.
  • Withdraw: You cannot withdraw from a course online. You must visit the Registrar’s Office or Student Service Center to withdraw. Check the add/drop/withdraw schedule online for deadlines.

Addressing Registration Errors

After submitting your registration, the system will either confirm your registration or display errors. Errors are indicated in bright red. Common errors include:

  • Prerequisite: You are missing a required prerequisite course. Check the course catalog for prerequisite information.
  • Class Level: You do not meet the required class level (Junior or Senior status). Class level is determined by earned credits (Junior: 56 credits, Senior: 88 credits).
  • Link Course: The course is linked to another course (e.g., a lab linked to a lecture). You must register for all linked sections.

If you encounter errors, work with your academic advisor to resolve them. Once the error is resolved, you will see the status “Registered” for the course.

Additional Course Information

Clicking on the course title hyperlink provides additional course description information, including important notes about the class.

Registration Holds

Students are encouraged to check for any registration holds on MyNMU under the Registration tile in the “Preparing for Registration” section well in advance of their registration time. Holds can prevent you from registering.

Identifying and Resolving Holds

To check for holds:

  1. Sign in to MyNMU.
  2. Click on the Registration tile.
  3. Click the Prepare for Registration link.
  4. Choose the semester.

Any registration holds will be displayed. Contact the university office or department that placed the hold to have it removed.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • My registration date/time is wrong: Registration times are based on earned hours, which do not include courses you are currently registered in.
  • I can’t view the future semester: Access to a new semester opens shortly before the registration period (1-2 weeks).
  • I can’t add or drop a course: Check for registration holds on MyNMU.

Educat: NMU's Online Learning Platform

Educat is the platform used for all online courses at NMU. Familiarize yourself with the basics of Educat before starting your coursework.

Financial Aid

Complete and submit your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) if applicable. NMU's FAFSA code is 002301. Note that processing times for FAFSA are determined by the federal government. Financial aid opportunities may differ between university programs.

Program Structure and Curriculum Schema

NMU structures its programs in a specific way, dividing them into cores.

Creating a Curriculum Schema

  1. The first core should be "Total Credits Required [Number of Credits]". If your program requires under 120 credits, the total should be adjusted to 120.
  2. Baccalaureate and associate degree programs should include a "General Education [Number of Credits]" core. For baccalaureate majors, this is typically "General Education 30-40."
  3. The remaining cores will list program requirements and notes.

Adding Courses to Cores

Most cores will involve adding courses from the "Curriculum Courses" list.

  1. Click "Add Courses" to choose classes from your list.
  2. A new window will open, allowing you to select courses and add them to the specific core.
  3. The number of credits for each class will be displayed.
  4. The trashcan icon removes a course requirement from the schema.

Customizing Core Appearance

"Add Custom Text" allows you to customize the appearance of your cores. This is useful for creating custom spacing, "or" options, or indicating non-required courses.

Custom Text Options:

  • Name: A required field for your reference (not displayed in the catalog).
  • Position: Choose "after," "before," "left," or "right" to position the text relative to the item.
  • Text field: Enter the text you want to display (e.g., "or").
  • Credits: Add credits for non-class categories.

Major Equivalency Guides for Transfer Students

Major Equivalency Guides provide equivalency information for specific majors at NMU, making it easier for transfer students to understand how their credits will transfer.

Accessing Major Equivalency Guides

These guides are published on Transferology and are publicly accessible.

Key Information Included

  • NMU scholarships for transfer students
  • How-to information for students
  • Information on general education classes
  • Equivalencies limited to the major core, required concentration courses, or other required courses

For Michigan students, completing the Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA) is recommended.

Requesting a Guide

Students can request a guide for several reasons:

  • To connect with the appropriate staff for advising and degree planning assistance
  • To ensure a guide is created if one doesn't already exist
  • To receive information about admissions, scholarships, and other important details

Advisers can also submit requests. NMU strives to respond to requests within 1-2 business days. Success Advisers in each department can assist with understanding degree requirements.

Additional Resources for NMU Students
