Navigating the PSU Student Portal: A Comprehensive Guide for New Students

The MyPennState Portal is an essential tool for all Penn State students, especially those who are newly admitted. It serves as a central hub for accessing important information, completing crucial tasks, and staying connected with the university. This guide provides a comprehensive overview of how to effectively utilize the portal, ensuring a smooth transition into Penn State.

Reviewing Your Offer of Admission

After the anticipation, receiving an offer of admission in the MyPennState Portal is a significant milestone. It's crucial to carefully review the offer letter, which outlines your intended area of study, starting term, and starting campus. Pay close attention to these details, as students may be admitted to Penn State for a term or campus different from their initial preference, such as a summer semester at University Park instead of the fall semester or their alternate choice campus.

Responding to Your Offer of Admission

If you decide to attend Penn State, log in to the MyPennState Portal and click the “Follow this link to accept your offer of admission” button to proceed. It is requested that students accept their offer by May 1 for summer/fall admission at any campus. If you choose not to attend Penn State, decline your offer in the portal, although this step is optional.

Submitting Deposits and Accepting Housing Contracts

Upon accepting your offer of admission, you'll be prompted to submit a $230 enrollment deposit and, if applicable, a $100 housing deposit. These deposits can be paid online during the acceptance process. If you accept an offer for a campus with on-campus housing, you can indicate your intention to LiveOn. Certain campuses may have a residency requirement. Selecting on-campus living will add a Housing and Food Service (HFS) contract to your account, which you must accept to complete the process. Your accepted HFS Contract can be reviewed in eLiving, where you can update your housing preferences, including location, roommate, and Campus Meal Plan level before the modification deadline. Students offered admission for a summer start at University Park will have two HFS Contracts: one for summer and one for the academic year.

Financial Aid: FAFSA and Awarding

To maximize your eligibility for financial aid, submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at studentaid.gov. The 2025-26 FAFSA will be available in October 2024, and all new Penn State students are encouraged to submit it by the priority filing date. Financial aid awarding for new Penn State students is anticipated to begin in spring 2025.

New Student Orientation

Regardless of your starting campus, Penn State's orientation programs are designed to support your academic, social, and personal transition to the university. These programs provide valuable information and resources for both students and their support systems. To register for orientation, log in to the MyPennState Portal and select "Visits and Events."

Immunization Requirements

In compliance with Pennsylvania state law, students living in on-campus housing must provide proof of the meningococcal conjugate vaccine (Menveo, Menactra, MCV4), which protects against infections caused by serogroups A, C, W, and Y. These immunization requirements apply to all undergraduate and graduate students at University Park and Commonwealth Campuses (excluding World Campus and Great Valley). Immunization records only need to be submitted once.

Transferring College Credits

Make sure you get any college credit coming your way! If you took any AP, IB, or CLEP exams, check Penn State's listing of tests and corresponding credit. If you completed college courses during high school, submit the official college transcript with your final grade(s). Penn State will evaluate the transcript(s) and award credits if possible. You can use the Transferring Credits Tool to check if Penn State will award credit for a specific class. It's advisable to discuss credits completed through another college/university with an academic advisor during NSO before submitting an official transcript, as credits that aren't usable toward your degree cannot be removed after they've been added to your Penn State record.
