Summer Internship Outfits: Your Guide to Professional Style
Summer internships are a crucial step for college students and recent graduates entering the professional world. Figuring out what to wear can be stressful, but with a little planning, you can create a versatile and professional wardrobe without breaking the bank. This guide will help you navigate the world of summer internship outfits, ensuring you look and feel confident throughout your experience.
Understanding the Internship Landscape
Before diving into specific clothing items, it’s essential to understand the context of your internship. Consider these factors:
- Duration: Determine the length of your internship. Most summer internships typically run from early June to early August, totaling approximately 43 days for full-time interns (Monday-Friday) with potential holidays like July 3rd and 4th off. Part-time interns working 2-3 days per week will have around 18-27 days. Knowing the number of days helps you plan accordingly.
- Office Culture: Research the company's dress code. Is it formal, business casual, or casual? Some offices allow neat, dark jeans, while others require more traditional professional attire. Understanding the dress code is crucial to making the right impression.
- Location and Weather: Consider the climate of your internship location. Hot summers call for breathable fabrics like linen and cotton. Keep an eye on the weather forecast to pack appropriately.
- Personal Style: While adhering to the dress code, incorporate your personal style through accessories, colors, and patterns to showcase your individuality.
Building a Versatile Capsule Wardrobe
The key to a successful internship wardrobe is versatility. A capsule wardrobe consists of essential pieces that can be mixed and matched to create various outfits. This approach minimizes the need for an extensive and expensive wardrobe.
The Core Pieces
- Trousers: Invest in 2-3 pairs of nice trousers in versatile colors like black, gray, and navy. These can be professional slacks or cropped/flared pants, depending on the office environment. Brands like Nic + Zoe, M.M.LaFleur, Ministry of Supply, Uniqlo, and Banana Republic Factory offer excellent options. Black pants are your basic bottom. You’ll end up wearing these twice per week (once at the beginning of the week and once towards the end). If you are going to super-casual internship, black jeans are fine, but no rips/holes please!
- Work Dress: Choose a work dress that can be styled in multiple ways. A neutral sheath dress is a versatile option for more formal settings. Ensure you can wear it at least three different ways, such as by itself, under a blazer, or with a cardigan or denim jacket. You almost want something slightly less memorable - something you can wear a bunch of different ways but is still cute. Maybe it’s a dress you could even put a t-shirt under to change the look.
- Dark Denim: If the office environment allows, include a pair of nice, tailored dark denim jeans. Ensure they have no rips or holes and fit well. These should be a pair of jeans that you can tuck things into if need-be. They should make you feel confident. You’ll wear these 1 time per week if you have casual Fridays and twice per week if you are allowed to wear denim on the regular.
- Button-Down Shirts: Pack 2-3 high-quality button-down shirts, including a classic white option. These shirts pair seamlessly with trousers and pencil skirts in neutral colors.
- Tops: Create a checklist of essential tops to grab from your closet or discounted stores:
- 1 Button-Down Basic (white is a great choice)
- 1 Button-Down Print
- 1 Top with a collar
- 1 Black basic top (wearable alone or under a blazer/cardigan)
- 1 White basic top (wearable alone or under a blazer/cardigan)
- Blazers: Invest in at least two blazers, with a high-quality black option as a must-have. Blazers are a cornerstone of professional attire. Brands like Cinq à Sept, J.Crew, Everlane, Madewell, J.Crew Factory, and Amazon offer stylish choices.
- Cardigans: A versatile black cardigan is a must-have for layering. Pair it with dress pants, skirts, or dresses for a polished appearance.
- Pencil Skirt: A nice pencil skirt in navy blue, black, or charcoal gray provides a sophisticated foundation for various professional outfits. Brands like Eileen Fisher, Theory, and J.Crew offer excellent options.
- Statement Jewelry: Include 3 eye-catching statement necklaces to elevate simple outfits. Avoid overly flashy or dangling earrings.
Accessorizing with Purpose
Accessories can make or break an outfit. Choose them carefully to complement your professional attire:
- Shoes: Select polished, comfortable flats and pumps that pair well with various outfits. A pair of colored flats can add a pop of color. If you are working in a more casual environment, get a simple white or black slide-on. If it’s a more fancy environment, I recommend a black closed-toe pump, a black open-toe, and a nude opened-toe - and that’s it! The heels don’t have to be enormous. If the workplace involves miles of walking, such as Capitol Hill, then the best advice is to have a pair of solid white sneakers on deck.
- Bags: Opt for a structured leather (or faux leather) tote or crossbody bag in black or brown. Ensure it can accommodate your laptop and work materials. Brands like Cuyana, Tory Burch, Madewell, Chloé, Polène, Loewe, Lo & Sons, Mansur Gavriel, Strathberry, and DeMellier offer stylish and functional options. I’m a one bag kind of girl.
- Belts: Include a few belts to cinch dresses or pair with trousers.
- Watches: A classic watch adds a professional touch, but it’s not always necessary.
Additional Essentials
- Hangers: Bring sturdy hangers to keep your clothes wrinkle-free.
- Mini Steamer: A portable mini steamer can be a game-changer for quickly removing wrinkles.
