Unlocking Futures: Summer Library Internships for Students
Summer library internships offer invaluable opportunities for students to explore career avenues, gain practical knowledge, develop professional networks, and increase self-confidence. These internships serve as a bridge between academic learning and real-world application, providing students with hands-on experiences that enhance their marketability and prepare them for future careers.
Exploring Career Avenues
Library internships allow students to explore and evaluate specific careers before committing to full-time employment in a particular field. By working alongside experienced library staff, interns gain insights into the various functions of a library and the diverse roles within the profession. This exposure helps students make informed decisions about their career paths and identify areas of interest they may not have considered before.
For example, the Teen Intern Library Program provides students with the chance to work alongside experienced library staff, learning about the various functions of a library. Teens in the entrepreneurship track will have the opportunity to learn about the Library’s makerspace technology, and explore marketing, financial planning, and branding.
Gaining Practical Knowledge
Interns receive hands-on opportunities to work with equipment and technology, increasing their marketability to employers. Internships enhance conventional classroom learning and allow students the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills in a professional setting while still in school.
At the Phillips Library, PEM’s research library, the digitization program exponentially increases free, worldwide access to collections and demonstrates that the library is a vital and engaged part of the museum and its communities.

Earning Academic Credit
Interns have resume-building experiences while applying academic concepts and principles. They gain exposure to real-world problems and issues that may not be found in textbooks and the potential to earn academic credit. The California State Library offers internships in which the student gains work experience only or as part of an educational program where the student may earn academic credit from their college. Some educational institutions may require a separate University-Organization Contract in addition to the California State Library Internship Agreement in order for a student to earn academic credit.
Developing Professional Networks
Interns cultivate relationships and build a network of associates and professional references. These connections can be invaluable for future job opportunities and career advancement.
Increasing Self-Confidence
Internships provide students with a supportive environment to take on new challenges and develop their skills. As they gain experience and confidence in their abilities, interns are better prepared to succeed in their future careers.
Internship Opportunities in Diverse Settings
Library internships are available in a variety of settings, including public libraries, academic libraries, museums, and government agencies. Each setting offers unique experiences and opportunities for learning.
