Understanding CSUN Summer Session Tuition Fees: A Comprehensive Guide

California State University, Northridge (CSUN) is committed to providing accessible and affordable education. As part of this commitment, the university strives to keep student costs as low as possible. However, fluctuations in public funding can impact tuition and fees. This article provides a detailed overview of CSUN summer session tuition fees, associated costs, payment options, and financial aid opportunities.

Tuition and Fees: An Overview

It is crucial to understand that all listed tuition and fees at CSUN are subject to change. The California State University (CSU) system reserves the right to increase or modify any listed tuition or fees, even after initial charges or payments have been made. This is primarily due to the reliance on public funding, which can be unpredictable. All CSU-listed tuition and fees should be regarded as estimates that are subject to change upon approval by the Board of Trustees, the chancellor, or the presidents, as appropriate.

Tuition Costs

For the Fall 2024, Spring 2025, Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 semesters, tuition and program fees, inclusive of a $500 program fee, are set at $6,900. This covers up to 12 credit units for undergraduate students and 9 credit units for graduate students.

Non-California residents should be aware of additional tuition costs. If you are not a resident of California, you must add $420.00 to your tuition for each unit. A typical student takes 30 units. To estimate non-resident tuition, multiply the number of units in which you plan to enroll for the year by $444, the per unit rate. Finally, add $13,320 to $7,850 for a total of $21,170.

Additional Fees

In addition to tuition, students are charged campus fees and systemwide fees. These fees support various campus services and activities. Other than mandatory systemwide tuition, all listed fees are subject to change without notice until the date when instruction for a particular semester or quarter has begun.

Cost of Attendance (COA)

The Cost of Attendance (COA) is an estimate of the total expenses a student can expect to incur while attending CSUN. This includes tuition and fees, as well as living expenses, books, supplies, and other miscellaneous costs.

To estimate your costs, visit CSUN Cost of Attendance, select an academic year and then choose your student group.

Housing and Meal Plan

For students living on campus, the housing and meal plan fee is a significant expense to consider. The CSUN housing fee includes utilities costs, Resident Hall Association membership, and a Meal Plan, which provides 10 meals per week plus 20 "Dining Dollars" per week that may be used at various eateries and convenience stores on campus.

For the Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 semesters, the housing and meal plan fee is $7,220 for 18 weeks. This increases slightly to $7,300 for the Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 semesters.

Housing Requirements

Housing space cannot be guaranteed unless:

Federal and State Aid

To be considered for federal student aid, including grants, loans, and work-study, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). California residents who aren’t eligible to file a FAFSA but meet AB 540 Status requirements will need to complete the California Dream Act Application (CADAA) to be considered for state and institutional grants and scholarships.

California residents can also apply for a Cal Grant, which provides additional financial assistance.

Institutional Scholarships

CSUN offers a variety of institutional scholarships. To apply, students must complete the CSUN online scholarship application by logging in to myMatadorScholarships. In addition to general institutional scholarships, individual colleges and departments at CSUN offer their own scholarships.

The California State University Foundation also offers donor-funded scholarships on a systemwide or multi-campus basis.

Grants and Loans

A grant is a form of need-based financial aid that does not have to be repaid. Students are automatically considered for Federal Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans. Parents of undergraduate students can apply for a Federal PLUS Loan to help cover costs.

The MPAcc Program awards up to two admitted students a full state university fee waiver (Students are required to pay all ancillary fees, Business Professional Fees and nonresident fees) for serving as Graduate Assistants. More information about this fee waiver program will be given to all admitted students upon acceptance.
