Sutter County Adult Education Programs: Empowering Futures Through Diverse Learning Opportunities

Sutter County offers a variety of adult education programs designed to empower individuals to achieve their educational and career goals. These programs cater to diverse needs, from high school diploma completion to English language acquisition and career technical training. By providing accessible and supportive learning environments, Sutter County Adult Education strives to create pathways to a brighter future for its students.

Comprehensive Academic Programs

Sutter County Adult Education provides opportunities for students to complete the graduation requirements for a high school diploma granted by the Sutter County Superintendent of Schools Office. The course of study is aligned with the California academic content standards for grades nine through twelve.

With the increasing need for flexible learning options, Sutter County Adult Education has adopted Edgenuity, an online learning management system, as the primary platform for delivering high-quality academic instruction. Most Edgenuity courses are A-G approved, ensuring that students receive a rigorous and comprehensive education. Every course required to earn a diploma is available online, and students can work at their own pace, but they still must meet minimum weekly productivity requirements. Each lesson outlines the learning objectives; there is a warm up, a video lecture that may include interactive exercises, some assignments, and then a quiz. Typically, students can complete most lessons in an hour. Students have the freedom to log in and do course work at any time. Students also have the ability to see their grades instantly. If they get stuck, their teacher is readily available to provide extra support.

Alternative Education Programs

Sutter County offers alternative education programs designed to meet the unique needs of students who may benefit from a non-traditional learning environment. These programs provide individualized support and resources to help students achieve academic success.

County Community School: Feather River Academy

Feather River Academy provides students in grades nine through twelve with an alternate placement for academic success through an individualized approach, emphasis on core subjects, life-long social skills, access to community services for both student and families, and smaller class sizes. Students are provided with opportunities to learn academic skills and individual responsibility necessary for the adult work world. Each student's educational program is individually assessed and prescribed. The community school course of study will be adopted by the county board of education and must enable students to continue academic work leading to the completion of a regular high school program. Emotional Disturbance (ED)/Day Rehabilitation Program

The ED/Day Rehabilitation program is designed for special education students whose emotional/behavioral problems have adversely affected their academic development. Students are identified after accommodations and interventions have been tried in their home school with little or limited success. The program provides an intense therapeutic environment in an educational setting. Students are sometimes referred for services as a less restrictive alternative to residential placement or are transitioning back to the community from a residential placement. The ultimate goal of the ED/Day Rehabilitation program is the reintegration of the student into a less restrictive school setting. Efforts are made to transition the student back to their home school through integration in local school programs. All mainstreaming activities are planned and supervised to ensure as much success as possible. This transition helps the students to ease back into the school community while the program can still provide maximum support.

Self-Contained Services - Non Categorical (SCS/NC)

The Self-contained Services - Non-categorical (SCS/NC) provides services to students who are identified through the individual education program (IEP) process as needing intensive structure and support. Students attending the self-contained services - non-categorical SCS/NC have one of the federal and state identified disabilities and the student's needs cannot be met in the school of residence due to requiring more intense services.

Deaf/Hard of Hearing

The services of the D/HH program follow a total communication approach, which develops aural/oral skills in students.

Adult Education Program

The purpose of the Adult Education program is to assist students (16 1/2 years and older) to complete course work in preparation for passing the General Educational Development (GED) exam; the California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE) or completing the requirements for a Sutter County Superintendent of Schools' High School diploma.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

ESL (English as a Second Language) is also offered both during the day and evening hours. EL Civics Citizenship courses are provided as are VESL (Vocational English as a Second Language) classes for those limited English speakers who seek specific trade or skills language.

Sutter County's ESL program is designed for non-native speakers of English who are 18 or older and want to improve their language skills. ESL classes are designed to help adults who want to learn or improve English reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. Classes are designed to help students obtain a job, become more involved in children's education, learn to communicate family health needs, and become involved in community activities.

Dora Maldonado is the Head English as a Second Language Teacher with the Sutter County Superintendent of Schools ESL program. Dora had previously worked at the Farmworker Institute of Education & Leadership Development (FIELD) in Butte County where she played an integral role in the integration of EFNEP's Eating Smart Being Active and UC CalFresh's Making Every Dollar Count lesson series into FIELD's textbook curriculum. Because of her previous knowledge and positive experience with the Butte Cluster's nutrition programs, Dora served as an advocate for our program and was instrumental in opening the door for UC CalFresh and EFNEP at the Sutter County's Superintendent of Schools.

In April 2018, Dora made a recommendation for the Sutter County Superintendent of Schools ESL program to incorporate EFNEP's Eating Smart, Being Active (ESBA) and UC CalFresh's Making Every Dollar Count (MEDC) lesson series into the ESL curriculum, which would allow participants to receive academic credit for their participation. This recommendation was well received, and the integration was successful. The ESBA and MEDC curricula now help the ESL program meet the COAAP (Civic Objective Additional Assessment Plan) 46.7 Nutrition Component of their ESL objectives. This is an objective that was picked according to the needs of the students. Dora contributes a great deal o energy into promoting our classes and assisting our educators with their recruitment efforts, which has contributed to our phenomenal retention strategies and EFNEP graduate rates in Sutter County. She has also helped us secure a classroom site with all the amenities for our educators to provide lessons to a large, diverse group of low-income families in Sutter County.

Dora shared that her passion for our nutrition program is that it gets her students to move and think about how to eat a more nutritious meal. She says that her collaboration with EFNEP has helped her fulfill her passion for helping others and that her students really enjoy the one mile walk and the delicious healthy food that anyone can prepare.

Since partnering with the Sutter County Superintendent of School to offer academic credit to participants, EFNEP has offered series-based lessons to 6 ESL group, graduating approximately 180 participants.
