Funding Your Global Ambition: A Guide to Texas A&M Study Abroad Scholarships
Planning your study abroad experience is exciting, and figuring out how to fund it is an important step. Fortunately, Texas A&M offers a variety of options to help make your international education affordable. From scholarships and financial aid to veteran’s benefits and pre-paid tuition plans, there are resources designed to fit different needs and circumstances.
Texas A&M University values the transformational experience that an Education Abroad opportunity provides. To be eligible for these scholarships, students must maintain full-time enrollment status for the term abroad. For graduate students, ‘full-time’ enrollment is 9 credit hours for the semester and 4 credit hours for the summer. For undergraduate and professional students, ‘full-time’ enrollment is 12 credit hours for the semester and 6 credit hours for the summer.

Texas A&M students have access to a variety of resources, each with its own eligibility requirements and application process. Scholarships: Funding for Academic Excellence and Specific Programs
Scholarships are a popular way to fund study abroad, as they provide financial assistance that does not need to be repaid.
Discounts and other funding opportunities offered by providers are subject to change at the discretion of the provider.

Texas A&M University Scholarships: Texas A&M offers various scholarships specifically for study abroad programs. These scholarships may be based on academic merit, financial need, program location, or field of study. Students are encouraged to research and apply for all scholarships for which they are eligible.
External Scholarships: Many external organizations also offer scholarships for study abroad programs. These scholarships may be specific to certain regions, fields of study, or demographics. Students should explore external scholarship databases and websites to identify additional funding opportunities.
The Lyons Charitable Foundation Scholarship: Established in 2016, this endowment provides one or more scholarships to full-time students in good standing attending Texas A&M University at Galveston, who apply for a study abroad Scholarship through the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid.
The Terri and George O'Kelley Scholarship: Established in 2022, distributions from this endowment will be used to provide one or more scholarships to students in good standing at Texas A&M University at Galveston seeking to participate in an Education Abroad program.
TAMUC Office of International Program Scholarships: The Office of International Program Scholarships is dedicated to providing opportunities for students to support their ambitions to study overseas. The Office of International Programs welcomes all students who are considering overseas studies to apply to their office-based scholarship. Grants are based upon length of program, but generally do not exceed $1,000 for summer programs and faculty-led programs; $1,500 for programs of longer duration.

TAMUC Oxford Program Scholarship: Texas A&M-Commerce and the Office of International Programs is proud to present the Oxford Program Scholarship for outstanding undergraduate students.
Global Study Scholarships: Global Study Scholarships give students the gift of international education and travel. Programs vary in length and cost to students. The Texas A&M Maritime Academy Summer Sea Term does not qualify for education abroad scholarships.
Financial Aid: Leveraging Federal and State Resources
Financial aid refers to loans, scholarships, and grants that can be used toward education abroad program expenses.
FAFSA and TASFA: Your first step in applying for financial aid of any kind is to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TASFA). The applications for FAFSA and TASFA open October 1st of each year. We are currently accepting applications for the upcoming, 2022/2023 academic year (Fall 2022-Summer 2023). FAFSA and TASFA applications for the 2023/2024 academic year (Fall 2023-Summer 2024) will be available to students October 1, 2022.
Donor Funded Scholarship Portal: It is important to note that the Donor Funded Scholarship Portal also opens October 1st of each year. Scholarship opportunities for the 2022/2023 academic year have closed, but the portal will re-open for the 2023/2024 award year on October 1, 2022. All current students and those prospective students who are admitted to the university are encouraged to submit their general scholarship application in the Donor Funded Scholarships app in myLEO as soon as it’s available. This application helps to match students to several scholarship opportunities. Additional scholarship opportunities that may require additional steps, like an essay, may be available once this general application has been submitted.

Federal Aid Limits: There are limits to the amount of federal student loans and federal Pell grant a student can receive each academic year, if eligible. There are also life-time limits to these funds, all of which are set by the Department of Education. Most financial aid funds requires a minimum of at least 6 credit hours each semester. The credit hours must be required to complete a student’s degree plan. Many grants pro-rate based on enrollment.
Elm Select: Elm Select allows students to compare private education lenders prior to applying for a private education loan.
Veteran's Benefits: Supporting Those Who Served
Veteran education benefits can help fund credit-bearing study abroad programs at Texas A&M, covering tuition and fees for approved courses. The Post-9/11 GI Bill has the potential to allow many more American students with diverse backgrounds to study abroad. The Department of Veterans Affairs has issued an important clarification of their policies that will help veterans and campus administrators to better understand how the GI Bill benefits can be used to help cover the cost of certain study abroad activities. In guidance they issued in response to questions we have been discussing with them, the VA addresses several of the ways that students can enroll in study abroad programs, and spells out what is eligible to be covered. Pre-Paid Tuition Plans: Planning Ahead for Educational Costs
