Decoding TCNJ Admissions: GPA, SAT/ACT Scores, and Beyond

For students setting their sights on The College of New Jersey (TCNJ), understanding the admissions landscape is crucial. While GPA and standardized test scores play a significant role, TCNJ employs a holistic review process, considering a multitude of factors to assess applicants. TCNJ doesn't officially state a minimum GPA requirement. However, the average high school GPA of the incoming class typically falls between 3.5 and 4.0. This suggests that TCNJ is very selective, and to be a competitive applicant, your GPA should be close to this average. Often times, schools in this range are trying to increase their selectivity and “prestige”.

A GPA of 3.61 or higher is generally expected, indicating that successful applicants are above average in their high school class, with a mix of A's and B's, and more A's than B's. For those with a GPA at or below this average, it's crucial to compensate with strong performance in other areas, such as challenging coursework and standardized test scores.

The Impact of Course Rigor

Colleges may view positively if you've taken challenging AP or honors courses, even if your GPA is slightly lower. This demonstrates a willingness to push yourself academically.

Standardized Testing: SAT and ACT Scores

TCNJ requires that you either take the SAT or ACT. The average SAT score for admitted students is 1200 (sum of math and reading portions). A competitive applicant should aim for a score close to this average; scores closer to 1100 may make acceptance more challenging.

The 25th percentile SAT score is 1140, and the 75th percentile SAT score is 1320. Scoring a 1320 SAT or a 31 ACT or above will nearly guarantee you admission. If you can achieve a high SAT/ACT score, the rest of your application essentially doesn't matter. You still need to meet the rest of the application requirements, and your GPA shouldn't be too far off from the school average of 3.61.

The average ACT score is 27. The 25th percentile ACT score is 26, and the 75th percentile ACT score is 31. To be a competitive applicant, your ACT score should come close to the average. If you’re closer to the 75, you’re likely going to have a tougher time getting accepted.

Test-Taking Strategies

When sending ACT scores to colleges, you have absolute control over which tests you send. To aim for the school's ACT requirement of 27 and above, you should try to take the ACT as many times as you can. By and large, most colleges do not superscore the ACT.

TCNJ considers the SAT Essay/ACT Writing section optional and may not include it as part of their admissions consideration.

TCNJ needs to see past your test scores and grades - they need to know that you will be a valuable and contributing member of their community. Get teacher recs that speak to your character.

Navigating the Application Process

Deadlines and Important Policies

Apply Before the Deadline. Too many students wait until the last minute to submit their application, and too much can go wrong during this precious time window. Since many students are applying on the last day, it’s possible that TCNJ’s own system crashes.

No Recruitment/Intake specific activity can be scheduled for the first 2 weeks of the semester. All Recruitment/Intake scheduling, reservations, accommodations, etc. All Recruitment/Intake advertisements and flyers must be approved by the Office of Student Life. Be sure to only hang flyers in approved locations. “Dorm Storming” or any other door-to-door solicitation is prohibited by the department of Residential Education and Housing. All grade release forms and bid acceptance forms must be submitted to the respected advisor. Chapters may only extend Bids or membership invitations to students that the Office of Student Life have verified as eligible. All students accepting Bids or invitations to membership must sign their New Member Bid Acceptance form and attend all Hazing Prevention programming provided by the Office of Student Life. All chapters must submit a full list of students that accept their Bids to the Office of Student Life within 48 hours of bid acceptance. Any student that accepts a bid and later changes their mind, or begins the New Member process and decides to withdraw, must complete a New Member Drop form. All chapters are required to submit a new member education plan to the Office of Student Life for review and approval of the process before any bids or invitations of membership can be offered. Hazing as defined by the TCNJ Student Organization Conduct Code, Student Conduct Code, and the State of New Jersey is prohibited in all forms. All New Member processes must conclude within 6 weeks of starting or by the last day of undergraduate classes, whichever is sooner. New Members must be told the date of initiation upon bid acceptance and beginning of New Member program. All New Member Education Activity must conclude by 12:00 midnight Sunday-Thursday. No overnight New Member Education Activity is allowed. Any variation from the submitted and approved New Member Education/Intake Program must be submitted in writing to the Assistant Director Fraternity & Sorority Life ahead of time for approval. All New Members must attend any IGC mandated New Members Education events.

GPA and Praxis Flexibility for Education Certification

The New Jersey Department of Education page on GPA and Praxis Flexibility provides information that outline the specific GPA ranges and corresponding Praxis score thresholds. All candidates for certification must complete the appropriate Praxis II Content Knowledge exam(s) for their endorsement area. Candidates must attempt the required exam(s) by the time they submit student teaching applications. As with GPA, New Jersey’s FLEX policy allows candidates to meet certification requirements through a combination of GPA and Praxis scores. To earn a certification in teaching English as a Second Language, candidates must submit their reported ACTFL scores with their application. The New Jersey Department of Education requires candidates to pass both oral and written English language proficiency tests. For Bilingual/Bicultural Education certification, candidates must pass the OPI in English with a minimum score of “Intermediate High” and the Written Proficiency Test (WPT) with a minimum score of “Advanced Low” or a score of “Intermediate High” if the target language WPT score is an “Advanced Low”. Candidates must also pass an oral and a written language proficiency test in their target language. All teacher candidates must successfully complete HIB training; through an online workshop or course-embedded training as evidenced by a certificate of completion. All teacher candidates must successfully complete a course in Biological Sciences, such as BIO104, or take the NJDOE Health Test, a timed 30-minute test completed online.

Graduate Level Expectations

Graduate level writing is expected of all students. The college policy for all graduate programs specifies that students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0. Students who fall below this cumulative GPA are placed on academic probation and given one semester to bring the GPA up to ≥ 3.0. If the student does not achieve a GPA of ≥ 3.0, the student is dismissed from the college. All nursing students at TCNJ are required to adhere to and are held accountable to the American Nursing Association’s Code of Ethics. All students are required to adhere to the college’s standards for academic honesty and integrity.

Pathway Program

First-semester curriculum: Pathway students enter TCNJ in the fall on a non-matriculating basis, meaning they are not enrolled in a degree program or major. Wraparound support: Pathway students benefit from a variety of resources that help promote their overall success and wellness. Personalized advising and attention begin almost immediately following a student’s decision to enroll. Additional services include tutoring, health and wellness programming, academic coaching, and more. Successfully pass all courses. Note that while students may matriculate with a 2.3 GPA, some programs (such as those that require certification) may require a higher GPA to be successful. If matriculation requirements are not met: Pathway students who don’t meet the requirements to matriculate in their second semester may be offered an additional, non-matriculated semester at TCNJ. Changing majors: As noted above, Pathway students matriculate in the major indicated in their program acceptance letter.
