School Violence: Examining Recent Teacher-Student Stabbing Incidents

Recent events involving teachers and students have highlighted the issue of violence in schools. These incidents, ranging from stabbings to attempted attacks, raise concerns about safety and security within educational institutions. This article examines several such cases, exploring the circumstances, responses, and potential underlying factors involved.

Stabbing at Switzer Learning Center

A troubling incident occurred at the Switzer Learning Center, a private school in Torrance, California, serving students from kindergarten through 12th grade. A former student allegedly entered the campus and stabbed two teachers, leaving them hospitalized. A third staff member was also injured. According to reports, the suspect also attempted to stab a fourth faculty member before being apprehended by the police.

During the attack, the former student allegedly claimed to have pipe bombs and appeared to leave them near 208th Street and Amapola Avenue as he was taken into custody. Authorities cleared the area, and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s bomb squad detonated two devices, rendering them safe. The detonation echoed in the morning through the Torrance business park where the school is. Media helicopters hovered overhead and news vans gathered through the afternoon as the situation developed.

Parent's Perspective

Cristina Morales, a parent of an 18-year-old autistic son who attends the school, waited anxiously for her son to be released. She had been waiting hours for her son to be released from the school. “I’m nervous,” she said. “My son gets stressed out easily.”

Morales recounted receiving a call from her daughter, who had spoken with her 18-year-old brother, detailing the unfolding events. “She told me that a student had brought a knife and wanted to stab other students,” she said. “My son ran and hid.”

Morales said her son was in the cafeteria, not far from the main office, when he heard a commotion and saw someone being attacked. She said that seeing what was happening, her son immediately told seven other students to hide in a storage room and used a chair to block the door. Her son found black trash bags and handed some to the students to use as cover in an attempt to hide, she said.

Morales' son and the other students remained hidden until police arrived. They were then taken upstairs where police asked the students questions. Morales said her son learned that the former student gained access to the school by telling one of the instructors that he needed to pick up paperwork from the main office. Once inside, he attacked that teacher before turning on others, she said.

Morales’ son was release from the school before noon. She said he was shaken by the incident. Switzer Learning Center referred all questions to Torrance police. A motive for the attack has not been released.

Morales expressed shock and questioned the motive behind the stabbing, stating she had never witnessed any mistreatment of students at the school.

Community Reaction

Ernesto Cardiel, who was in the area during the incident, noticed the police presence and road closures. “I saw a minivan and a police officer talking to a woman sitting on the corner,” he said. “I thought it was a car accident.” He expressed his dismay upon learning the true nature of the situation. “That’s pretty awful,” he said.

Teacher Stabs Student to Death in South Korea

In a separate and tragic event, a teacher in South Korea stabbed an eight-year-old student to death at an elementary school. The teacher, a woman in her 40s, confessed to the crime after police officers found her and the young girl with stab wounds at the elementary school in the central city of Daejeon.

The girl was brought to hospital "in an unconscious state, but she later died". The country witnessed a string of high-profile violent crime incidents in 2023, however, including several stabbings.

Context of Violence in South Korea

This incident occurred amidst a backdrop of increasing violent crime in South Korea. In July of that year, a person was killed and three wounded in another stabbing at a subway station in Seoul. In August, a high school teacher was reportedly attacked with a knife, also in Daejeon. In the same week, an attacker drove a car into a pedestrian walkway in the city of Bundang, near Seoul, before attacking people at a department store with a knife.

Update on the South Korea Stabbing

Police in Daejeon said Tuesday that a teacher at an elementary school admitted to stabbing a seven-year-old girl who was found critically wounded during an afterschool care programme on Monday.

The incident has shocked South Korea, prompting acting President Choi Sang-mok to offer condolences during a cabinet meeting about the child’s death and order the Ministry of Education and the authorities to thoroughly investigate the incident.

The female teacher is being treated for self-inflicted wounds at a hospital, Yuk Jong-myeong, chief of Daejeon’s western district police station, said. She has not yet been arrested, as police are still investigating Monday’s stabbing.

Reported to be in her 40s, the teacher told police that she had recently returned to work after a period of leave for health reasons, Yuk said, also saying she has received treatment for depression since 2018.

The victim was a student at the elementary school where the teacher worked, though police said that a relationship between the two has not yet been established.

The girl was discovered by her grandmother, an official at the Daejeon Metropolitan Office of Education said during a media briefing on Tuesday.

Heroic Intervention in California

In Porterville, California, a teacher at Monache High School is being lauded for his courageous intervention during an armed attack on a student. 19-year-old Noah Seratte, a former student who had been expelled, allegedly entered the campus disguised as a student.

After about an hour, he allegedly walked into Robert Sundre's classroom and stabbed a 15-year-old girl.

Teacher's Account

"I saw his hand come up like this, and I don't know what happened. I reacted, I grabbed the chair. I was across the room by the time he had a second stroke coming in," said Mr. Sundre.

"He missed the second stroke, if I remember right, and he saw me coming at him with a chair."

The suspect then ran away, but Sundre says he left evidence behind.

"I saw the kid's backpack and opened it, and there was a hammer," said Sundre.

Aftermath and Response

After the stabbing, Sundre quickly focused his attention on the victim. He applied pressure to her wound and instructed staff to call 911. Within moments, school nurses responded, and not long after, Porterville police arrested the suspect nearby.

Administrators are reviewing security protocols in light of the attack. "We are looking at everything that took place that morning to really make sure that our campus is safe and our students are safe," said Monache High School Principal Shondra Walker.

Walker expressed gratitude for Sundre's actions, stating, "There are not enough words to thank Mr. Sundre for his response. He was faced with the unthinkable and responded instantaneously, so we are so grateful to him for that."

The student is recovering and should be back in school soon.

Authorities say he was previously arrested for making threats against students and staff. Monday's attack has administrators reviewing all of their protocols.
