The Temple News
History and Evolution
Temple University's student newspaper, The Temple News (TTN), has a rich history dating back to its inception on September 19, 1921, as Temple University Weekly. The paper has undergone several transformations over the decades, reflecting the changing landscape of journalism and the university itself.
In the 1930s and continuing into the 1950s, with exceptions during World War II, the paper, then labeled Temple University News, was printed three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The paper went daily during the 1960s and 1970s before dropping to four days per week in the 1980s. In the early 1990s, TTN held the distinction of being the fourth-largest daily newspaper in Philadelphia.
Citing declining ad revenue and staff size, the paper returned to its weekly origins in the late 1990s. With the exception of a single semester in 2005, TTN transitioned to a bi-weekly publication schedule in 2019, and briefly to monthly in 2023 before reverting to bi-weekly prints in 2024.
Renaissance in the Twenty-First Century
The Temple News experienced a renaissance in the twenty-first century, marked by increased staff numbers and renewed interest in its content, bucking industry trends.
Digital Presence and Awards
TTN has made significant strides in internet journalism and has been a perennial nominee for the Associated Collegiate Press's Online Pacemaker award, winning it in 2008. The site underwent a revamp in the summer of 2012, adopting its current configuration. Most recently, TTN Online earned an EPpy Award for the Best College Newspaper Web Site in the country, an award given by Editor & Publisher and Mediaweek magazines.
Current Operations
The Temple News prints 2,000 copies every other Tuesday, which are distributed primarily on Temple's Main Campus. A dedicated staff of 36, supported by more than 150 writers, handles the designing, reporting, and editing of the bi-weekly paper. In 2023, the paper's efforts were recognized with nine Keystone Press Awards. The paper provides complimentary printed copies to all students, professors, and staff, and its present format is designed to be more engaging for its target audience. Articles and graphics are typically assigned during Friday budget meetings for the following week's Tuesday printing or online cycle.
