Accessing Library Resources

On-Campus Access

The Brown-Daniel Library welcomes users to explore its extensive collections and utilize its various services. The Library's Homepage contains valuable information about resources and services. New to the campus? Need to learn about our resources? The Research & Instruction Dept is available to help. Using libraries can sometimes look overwhelming or even intimidating. We want you to feel that you belong here by being of service when help is needed!

Off-Campus Access

For those studying or working remotely, the TSU Library provides seamless off-campus access to its vast digital resources. Off-campus access to the libraries' resources may require your TSU login and password. Please select the first option on the Open Athens screen that offers access to TSU Faculty, Staff, and Students. If you experience any difficulties signing on, please contact the Head of Technology, Assessment and Systems. The mission of Remote Services is to provide access to the Library's resources and services in order to meet the informational needs of off-campus students and faculty. Library users have the ability to access online databases, the online catalog, and information on the Library's homepage from remote sites. Lean Library Browser Extension

Tennessee State Univesity subscribes to Lean Library, a browser extension that alerts you when online content is available through the TSU library while you are doing your research both on and off campus. Lean Library knows all the electronic resources TSU's Brown Daniel Library has access to, whether it's a library purchase or subscription service. Lean Library will point TSU users to our library resources when they are searching. Regardless of how you arrive at an e-resource, Lean Library will alert you if you have access to an e-resource through the library. If you attempt to access an e-resource the library doesn't subscribe to; Lean Library will look for other ways to access the content, such as placing an interlibrary loan request or directing you to open access versions.

Research Assistance

Our library faculty are subject specialists who can provide information at the public services desks or by research appointments. Our librarians offer a research consultation service for the college's faculty, students, and staff. Library Faculty are available to answer reference questions, assist with research projects, and provide virtual information literacy sessions. Searching for an answer to a question? The library provides instruction for students and faculty so they may become acquainted with our services.

Library Instruction

If you need an instruction session for your class, please refer to the Library Instruction page or contact Mr. Library Instruction classes may be scheduled by the Off-Campus and TN eCampus Faculty at any remote site or at the Brown-Daniel and Avon Williams Libraries. The sessions may include orientation to the libraries including the Library homepage, searching the online catalogs, online databases, etc. In addition, the libraries provide Information Literacy Mini Courses in selected subject fields. The Library encourages faculty to upload copies of journal articles, book chapters and other documents into their E-Learn content area.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

If the library does not possess a specific book or article, the ILL staff will request the item from another library. Off-Campus and TN eCampus Library users may borrow up to 10 books at a time by completing the online Interlibrary Loan request form.

Technology Access

In addition to our pc workstations, we offer iMacs, color printers and scanners. We loan MacBooks, scientific calculators and other tools. Want access to computers? Valid TSU ID cards and/or network accounts with passwords allow viewing of information. The library provides computers for word processing applications. Computers are located in the computer laboratory on the third floor. Computers are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Streaming Video

Is the most comprehensive video subscription available to libraries. It delivers more than 64,000 titles spanning the widest range of subject areas including anthropology, business, counseling, education, film, health, history, music, and more.

Nursing & Allied Health Resources

Considered the most comprehensive source of full text for nursing & allied health journals, it provides full text for more than 1300 journals. This authoritative file contains full text for many of the most used journals in the CINAHL index - with no embargo. Nursing & Allied Health Reference Source is a new resource for researchers studying nursing, allied health, social work, occupational therapy, physical therapy, rehabilitation, nutrition, and other related fields.

JSTOR

Jstor Is a highly selective digital library of academic content in many formats and disciplines. The collections include top peer-reviewed scholarly journals as well as respected literary journals, academic monographs, research reports from trusted institutes, and primary sources. The library has the entire Arts & Sciences Collection, the Life Sciences Collection and Business Journal IV.

SciTech Premium Collection

The SciTech Premium Collection includes the Natural Science Collection, Engineering, and Advance Technologies & Aerospace databases and provides full-text titles from around the world, including scholarly journals, trade and industry journals, magazines, technical reports, conference proceedings, government publications and more.

Web of Science

Is very important for research discovery and analytics. Web of Science connects publications and researchers through citations and controlled indexing in curated databases spanning every discipline.

Cite Them Right

Cite Them Right is an online referencing platform designed to advise students on how to reference correctly across eight referencing styles. Librarians can assist with finding the correct formats. This service is available for TSU students, faculty, and staff.

Global Health E-Books

This collection brings together essential readings that explore critical global health issues in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3. It covers a wide array of topics, including pandemic response, health systems strengthening, the intersection of economics and policy, mental health, and infectious diseases. These books provide in-depth analysis and innovative solutions for overcoming public health challenges, advancing health equity, and reforming healthcare systems to ensure sustainable and inclusive health outcomes worldwide.

Physical Collections

The library houses a wide array of print and other resources. The Reference Department includes general and specialized reference books, and government documents. A collection of TSU theses and dissertations are also housed in this area. A TSU ID card is required to use these items. Textbooks for current courses are also available in the circulating collection.

Tennessee Academic Library Collaborative (TALC) Cards

Students and faculty may use the University of Tennessee and TN eCampus Libraries via Tennessee Academic Library Collaborative (TALC) cards. TALC cards are available at the Main Campus Library Circulation Department.

Borrowing Policies

Loan Periods and Renewals

Library users may borrow up to 10 books at a time. The loan period is three weeks. CirculationBooks may be borrowed for three weeks. Books must be returned to Tennessee State University Library before the due date. Fines may result in failing to do so. Books must be received back at Tennessee State University Library prior to the due date. The loan period is 4 weeks from the date of dispatch to allow delivery time in both directions. Telephone renewals are encouraged. You may contact Mr.

Fines

There is a five-day grace period. If a book is due, the fine will be 60 cents. are sent to patrons. a hold will be placed on the patron's account. must be cleared in order to register for classes or graduate. Fines must be cleared to prevent other consequences to borrowers.

Materials Not Available for Loan

Please be aware that some library materials including reference books, serials, rare and special collection books, and microforms are not available for loan. Items may be placed on hold by teaching faculty for class assignments.

Library Use Policies

General Conduct

Food and drinks are not allowed in the library. No eating is allowed in the Libraries. Users are expected to respect others, and refrain from making any unnecessary noise. Computing Practice will be asked to discontinue use of the resources.

Technology Use

Downloading is prohibited. Use of cameras is prohibited.

Consequences of Policy Violations

Failure to return library materials promptly or abide by the Library's policies will be subject to fines and disciplinary action.

Hours of Operation

Check the library homepage along with any weather-related closings. The Archives are open until 4:15 Monday through Friday. The Avon Williams Library is open on Saturday and Sunday. Check schedules and allow time for checking out materials.
