Unlocking Opportunities: A Guide to the Terry Foundation Scholarship at Texas A&M University

For Texas students aspiring to attend Texas A&M University, navigating the landscape of financial aid and scholarships can seem daunting. Among the various opportunities available, the Terry Foundation Scholarship stands out as a prestigious and impactful program. This article delves into the details of the Terry Foundation Scholarship at Texas A&M, outlining its purpose, eligibility requirements, application process, and the unique benefits it offers to deserving students.

The Terry Foundation: Investing in Texas' Future Leaders

The Terry Foundation Scholarship is the largest private scholarship provider in the entire state of Texas. Founded in 1987, the Terry Foundation was created to repay a scholarship its founder, Howard Terry, received to attend UT Austin to play football. Howard and Nancy Terry, long-time residents of Houston, established the Terry Foundation in 1986 with the goal of empowering young Texans through education. Mr. Terry had always been grateful for the financial assistance that enabled him to go to college, so they decided to dedicate their time and resources to giving future generations of young people in Texas this same opportunity.

The Foundation partners with several public universities in Texas to provide scholarships to outstanding students. The point of the scholarship is specifically in partnership with public universities in Texas. Specifically, they have partnered with 11 universities, and only provide scholarships to them. Note that this used to be 13, but has since contracted. Funding for the Terry Foundation Scholarship at Texas A&M is provided by the Terry Foundation.

What the Terry Scholarship Offers: A Full Ride Opportunity

The Terry Scholarship provides scholarships up to the cost of attendance to outstanding students from Texas. The scholarship itself is a full-ride last-dollar scholarship. Full ride means that students do not pay out of pocket for university expenses. Last dollar means that the scholarship funding is applied after all funding sources and scholarships the student has.

The Terry Traditional Scholarship, or Freshman Scholarship, is a full ride, last dollar scholarship that covers up to eight semesters. This encompasses the standard four years of undergraduate education.

Eligibility Criteria: Who Can Apply?

The Terry Foundation Scholarship is offered to traditional first-time freshman who graduate from Texas high schools. To be eligible for the Terry Scholarship at Texas A&M, applicants must meet specific criteria:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or a Permanent Resident and meet Texas residency requirements.
  • Applicants must have graduated from an accredited Texas high school or homeschool.
  • In addition to these requirements, in order to actually be awarded the scholarship, you must get into one of the universities, and commit to attending immediately following graduation, without taking a gap year.

Beyond Academics: What the Terry Foundation Seeks

While academic achievement is undoubtedly important, the Terry Foundation seeks students who demonstrate a well-rounded profile. Your grades are only one of many considerations in the review process. Additional factors for selection include, but are not limited to your leadership, community service, special talents, first generation college status, and academic achievement under difficult circumstances.

The scholarship is both need and merit based. They are looking for students who demonstrate their leadership and character through their extracurriculars; students with great academic potential as demonstrated by their grades, and students with demonstrated financial need. Students should also submit an aid application to be considered for scholarships that require financial need.

The Application Process: A Step-by-Step Guide

Applications for the scholarship are handled by each individual university. Students apply through the school, and they review these along with their base application. The application itself varies by school; we’ll use Texas A&M as an example. They require you to apply through the Common App, and to complete the supplemental scholarship essay to be considered. You must also complete the FAFSA. In approximately 500 words, describe an example of your leadership. You can find the application requirements for each partner school conveniently linked on their affiliated universities page. Terry Scholarship affiliates at each university review applications and nominate candidates for interviews with the Foundation.

The Interview: Showcasing Your Potential

The scholarship requires a panel interview, where you are asked questions by six current and former Terry Scholars about your background. This is an informal interview, and takes around 30 minutes. You are encouraged to dress professionally for this.
