Temiloluwa “Emmanuel” Oluwasesin, who immigrated to America from Nigeria at age 11, found a second home at the TGR Learning Lab Anaheim. As he navigated the complexities of a new culture and explored his interests, the Learning Lab provided a secure environment where he could develop his identity, hone his skills, and pursue his passion for computers.
Emmanuel shared, “Since I came to the United States, I wasn’t exactly sure where I fit in the entire spectrum. I felt like the parts that I brought from Nigeria were flaws within me that I needed to change.” Through afterschool classes at the Learning Lab, Emmanuel learned how to code and discovered a path to a career in engineering.
Igniting a Passion for Science
The TGR Learning Lab's impact extends to students of all ages, sparking interests and fostering a love of learning. Matthew Payan's experience exemplifies how the Learning Lab can awaken a student's passion for science. After participating in the TGR Learning Lab Expanded Learning program, Matthew's enthusiasm for science grew, leading him to participate in numerous classes where he gained valuable skills.
Matthew Payan started attending the TGR Learning Lab in 6th grade in 2018. He particularly enjoyed the marine biology class, where he raised sea monkeys and observed them under a microscope. He also built a robot designed for underwater exploration, modeled after the anglerfish to withstand deep-sea conditions.

During the pandemic, Matthew took several virtual classes, including cybersecurity, graphic design, web design, intermediate web design, and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Graphic design stood out to him as a fun and exciting topic, and he learned how to use Photoshop, a skill that proved to be very useful.
Matthew participates in TGR Learning Lab programs because the topics are fun, the activities are cool, and it helps him decide on a career path. He also noted Ms. H and Mr. Luong as two TGR Learning Lab teachers who inspired him. He aspires to work in a science-related field. He recommends the TGR Learning Lab because it is fun, free, and educational.
College Bound Academy: A Bridge to Higher Education
The TGR Learning Lab extends its support to students preparing for college through programs like the College Bound Academy (CBA). One student shared their experience of attending CBA at the TGR Learning Lab in Anaheim, CA. As the oldest among siblings, they sought guidance from friends regarding the education system. Prior to attending CBA, they admitted to procrastinating and wandering aimlessly when it came to preparing for college.
However, the two-week summer program and subsequent workshops provided a warm and welcoming environment. The student found a positive atmosphere where they could connect with knowledgeable staff and peers navigating the college application process. They emphasized that participating in the TGR Learning Lab was a privilege and an honor.
Reflecting on their experience, the student felt proud of their accomplishments. They scheduled appointments with college counselors and visited campuses, which felt liberating during a time of uncertainty. The program taught them to take advantage of opportunities. The impact of CBA materialized during their senior year of high school. They successfully landed a feature article in their school’s newspaper, applied for a job at Cal State Fullerton’s Diversity Initiatives and Resource Center, and grew as a person. As they prepared for their fall semester at Cal State Fullerton, they realized that College Bound Academy not only guided them toward college but also helped them grow in confidence.
