The Citadel Alumni Association: Supporting The Citadel and Its Graduates

The Citadel Alumni Association (CAA) stands as a pillar of support for The Citadel, the South Carolina Corps of Cadets, and its extensive network of alumni. As a private, self-sustaining, non-profit organization, the CAA's mission is to promote the ideals and purpose of The Citadel while fostering a strong bond among its graduates.

Aims and Objectives

The Citadel Alumni Association is dedicated to supporting The Citadel, the South Carolina Corps of Cadets, and all alumni. It achieves this by functioning as a private, self-sustaining, non-profit organization, promoting the ideals and purpose of The Citadel.

Organizational Structure and Recognition

The Citadel Alumni Association operates as a 501(c)(3) public charity, holding the EIN 57-0673477. This status means that donations made to the association are tax-deductible, further incentivizing contributions to The Citadel's mission.

Connecting Alumni Across Generations

For over 150 years, The Citadel Alumni Association has been instrumental in helping alumni maintain close ties with their fellow graduates and the college itself. Regardless of whether an individual earned their degree as a member of the South Carolina Corps of Cadets, an active duty student, a veteran, a day student, or a student in The Citadel Graduate College (CGC), the CAA strengthens their connection to their alma mater.

Supporting The Citadel's Programs

The CAA provides alumni with a unique avenue to support The Citadel's programs and initiatives. These contributions play a vital role in the college's continued success and development.

Associate Membership

Recognizing the importance of community support, the CAA extends membership opportunities to non-alumni, including friends, widows, parents, retirees, faculty, and staff, through associate memberships.

Addressing Alumni Inquiries

The Alumni Association staff compiles a list of frequently asked questions to assist alumni. Common inquiries include:

  • Ring Replacement/Resizing: Inquiries regarding ring replacement should be directed to the Class Ring Coordinator.
  • Alumni Directory: Alumni can request a list of alumni in their area (for CAA purposes only) by contacting Kyle Mims.
  • Life Membership Rate: For one year after graduation, alumni can still receive a $200 discount off the regular Life Membership rate, making the special rate $500 payable over 5 years.
  • Citadel Beach Club Reservations: The Citadel Beach Club is managed through The Citadel’s Office of Event Management.
  • Alumni Center Room Reservations: Questions about reserving a room in the Alumni Center can be directed to the Facilities Manager.

Generous Contributions and Financial Support

The Citadel Alumni Association has a history of significant financial contributions to The Citadel. The Association contributed $250,000 in financial support to the college the prior year. By 2023, $800,000 was budgeted to support scholarships and college operations. This year, the CAA proudly donated $900,000 to assist with various needs and additional ROTC scholarships. The Citadel Office of Financial Aid manages the Association’s scholarships.

Leadership and Vision

Norman Poole Jr., ’90, assumed the position of president at the Nov. 3 meeting. The Citadel Alumni Association has a long history of supporting The Citadel, as do our alumni and corporate citizens. As our college depends less on support from the state of South Carolina, our beloved institution has continued to produce principled leaders while not increasing tuition for in-state cadets since 2019.

Notable Alumni

The Citadel has produced numerous distinguished graduates who have made significant contributions in various fields. One such alumnus is MAJ Samuel R. Bird, remembered for his leadership of the casket detail at President John F. Kennedy’s funeral. CPT Terry D. Cordell, USA, ’57, was the first Citadel graduate to die in Vietnam.
