The Internship: A Deep Dive into the Unrated Comedy and Its Reception
"The Internship" is a 2013 American comedy film that brought Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson together again. Directed by Shawn Levy and written by Vince Vaughn and Jared Stern, the film tells the story of two recently laid-off salesmen who try to get jobs at Google by competing with much younger and more tech-savvy people.
Plot Overview
After their employer closes, salesmen Billy McMahon and Nick Campbell find themselves jobless. Billy signs them up for Google internships. They have to work together in teams over the summer and compete against other interns in different tasks. Only the people on the winning team will get jobs at Google.
At first, Stuart, Yo-Yo, and Neha think Billy and Nick are useless, but Billy gets the team together and helps them make a comeback in a quidditch game. The teams have to create an app, and Billy and Nick convince their teammates to go out for a wild night, including a visit to a strip club. Nick tries to flirt with Dana, a Google executive, but doesn't have much luck. He starts going to technical presentations to impress her and becomes interested in the material.
While the teams get ready to run the technical support hotline, Billy gets technical information from an introvert called "Headphones," which helps him. But the team fails because Billy doesn't log his calls for review. In the last task, which is a sales challenge, the teams have to get the biggest company they can to start advertising with Google. Nick gives Billy an inspiring speech and encourages him to come back and help the team in the final challenge.
Chetty is about to say that Graham's team has won when Billy, Nick, and their team show up to give a great presentation about their new client. Chetty knows that even though the pizzeria isn't a big business, it has a lot of potential because it's growing through technology. Graham argues, but Headphones, who is actually the head of Google Search, puts him down. As the students leave, Nick and Dana are still dating, and so are Lyle and Marielena, Google's dance instructor.

Ty Burr of The Boston Globe wrote, "Here’s why Google is so successful: It's figured out a way for Twentieth Century Fox to make a two-hour Google commercial disguised as a summer comedy." Stephen Rea of The Philadelphia Inquirer commented, "The Internship itself would be kind of charming, too, if this Google-recruitment film, this 119-minute commercial for Googliness, weren't so downright creepy." David Cox of The Guardian described the movie as a "two-hour corporate video," while Mark Kermode called it "the longest advert I've seen in the cinema".
