Tim Boyle: From College Quarterback to NFL Journeyman

Timothy Kevin Boyle, born on October 3, 1994, is an American professional football quarterback whose journey began in college. His career reflects a path from high school success to college competition and ultimately to the professional ranks as an undrafted free agent.

Early Years and High School Success

Boyle's football career gained momentum during his time in high school, where he achieved significant recognition. He was named Connecticut High School Coaches' Association Player of the Year. Demonstrating his talent and leadership, he earned first-team all-state honors from the New Haven Register and All-Hartford Courant accolades. Additionally, he was recognized as All-Southern Connecticut Conference player during his senior year. As a senior, he threw for nearly 2,500 yards and 24 touchdowns as team won state Class LL championship for the third-straight season. He also rushed for 295 yards on 60 carries for five touchdowns. Boyle's accomplishments led him to be one of three finalists for the Walter Camp Football Foundation Connecticut Player of the Year Award. Even as a junior, while sharing starting duties, he threw for 850 yards and 15 touchdowns in six games. Further showcasing his early potential, Boyle played in the Hall of Fame Classic Military Bowl all-star game for the state of Connecticut.

College Career

UConn Huskies (2013-2015)

Boyle started his college career with the UConn Huskies, where he played for three seasons (2013-2015). He started four games at quarterback, seeing time in five games total. During his time with the Huskies, Boyle completed 59-of-133 passes for 621 yards. He became the first true freshman to start at quarterback for UConn since 2003. His first career start came against South Florida (Oct. 12) and had a season-high 19 yard rush in the game. In his second career game at Cincinnati (Oct. 19), he tossed for 310 yards on 22-of-39 passing. Eastern Kentucky Colonels (2017)

After transferring from UConn, Boyle enrolled at EKU for the 2016 spring semester and had a redshirt season. Boyle finished his collegiate career at Eastern Kentucky, where he started all 11 games in 2017 and completed 201-of-327 passes for 2,134 yards with 11 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. He became the first EKU quarterback to eclipse the 300-yard mark in their first game as a Colonel, completing 63 percent of his passes (29-of-46) for 320 yards and two touchdowns at Western Kentucky (Sept. 2). He finished the season 201-of-327 (61.5 percent) for 2,134 yards and tossed 11 touchdown passes. He had the fifth most passing yards in one season ever by a Colonel. Boyle led the conference and ranked 48th in the country in passing yards, led the OVC and ranked 31st in the nation in completion percentage, was second in the conference and 27th in the country in completions per game (18.27), had the third-best passing efficiency in the league and the fourth-most passing touchdowns. He threw for 202 yards and a touchdown pass while completing 24-of-35 passes in a near upset of Kentucky (Sept. 9). Professional Career

Green Bay Packers (2018-2020)

Boyle entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Green Bay Packers in 2018. Boyle did not play during the 2018 regular season. He saw his first professional playing time in a regular season on October 20, 2019, during a Week 7 win over the Oakland Raiders. Boyle took over for Rodgers during the final minutes of the game after victory was assured, kneeling the ball three times for −3 yards to run out the clock. He saw more extended playing time on November 24 during a lopsided loss to the San Francisco 49ers, completing his first NFL pass to backup tight end Robert Tonyan. Boyle was scheduled to become a restricted free agent following the 2020 season, but the team did not extend a tender to him at the start of the new league year.

Detroit Lions (2021-2022)

On March 22, 2021, Boyle signed a one-year contract with the Detroit Lions. He was placed on injured reserve on September 2, and activated on November 20, making his first career start in Week 11 in place of an injured Jared Goff. Boyle appeared in 11 games, making five appearances at quarterback. He threw for 281 yards and completed 31-of-60 pass attempts. He started the final regular season game of the season against Temple (Nov. 28), going 12-for-20 for 121 yards. He also saw duty at end of Central Florida game (Oct. 10) and was 2-of-2 for seven yards.

Chicago Bears (2022)

Boyle then signed with the Chicago Bears.

New York Jets (2023)

On April 6, 2023, Boyle signed with the New York Jets. He was released on August 29 and then re-signed to the practice squad. He was promoted to the active roster on September 16. On November 19, Boyle replaced Zach Wilson late in the third quarter and completed 7-of-14 pass attempts for 33 yards and an interception in a 32-6 loss to the Buffalo Bills. The next day, the Jets announced that Boyle would start in their Week 12 match against the Miami Dolphins. In a 34-13 defeat, he completed 27-of-38 pass attempts for 179 yards, throwing 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions (1 of which was returned for a 99-yard touchdown by Jevon Holland.) Boyle started again in the Jets' Week 13 game against the Atlanta Falcons, but was benched in the fourth quarter in favor of Trevor Siemian as the Jets lost 13-8.

Houston Texans (2023-2024)

Boyle then signed with the Houston Texans.

Miami Dolphins (2024)

Boyle appeared in 21 career games with five starts with Green Bay (2019-20), Detroit (2021), Chicago (2022), the N.Y. Jets (2023) and Miami (2024). He appeared in Miami's Week 3 contest at Seattle this season as a reserve quarterback, completing 7-of-13 passes for 79 yards. Boyle has completed 121-of-196 passes (62.3 pct.) for 1,013 yards with four touchdowns and 12 interceptions in his career.

Tennessee Titans (2025)

Lacrosse Coach Tim Boyle

SAC Reg. Tim Boyle enters his ninth season as the men's head lacrosse coach in 2025. Boyle has led the Bulldogs to an NCAA Tournament appearance in five of the last seven seasons, including back-to-back appearances in the national quarterfinals, highlighted by a national semifinal appearance in 2021. He has led Wingate to three SAC Tournament championships and a pair of regular season SAC titles in his tenure with the Bulldogs. Boyle was named the SAC Coach of the Year in 2021 and 2023. Wingate had zero SAC titles and one NCAA Tournament appearance prior to Boyle's arrival. In his 24 years as a collegiate head coach, Boyle is 237-104 overall. The 2024 season saw the Bulldogs go 11-5 overall, with a 7-2 record in league play. The 'Dogs were ranked in the USILA top 10 all season, while picking up three victories against top-20 opponents. Willie Grieco was named the USILA National Attackman of the Year for the third straight year, while Joe Karnich was named the National LSM of the Year. The 2023 season saw the Bulldogs go 12-3 overall with a perfect 9-0 record in league play to capture the regular season SAC title in a conference that had two final four teams including the eventual national champions. The Bulldogs won four games against ranked opponents, including three against top-10 teams. Wingate climbed to as high as number two in the national rankings, while defeating eventual national champion Lenoir-Rhyne on the road and taking down final four participant Limestone at the Crown Classic. Grieco repeated as the SAC Offensive Player of the Year and as the USILA National Attackman of the Year. Peyton Farley was named the Defensive Player of the Year, with Johnny Caponi being named the SAC Specialist of the Year. In total, seven Bulldogs earned All-American recognition in 2022, with Grieco picking up USILA first team honors and Farley and Karnich earning second team accolades. The 2022 season saw Boyle guide the Bulldogs to a 13-5 record, going 8-2 in SAC play. Wingate earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, rolling to a 20-11 victory at #7 Lindenwood to advance to the national quarterfinals. The Bulldogs were ranked in the USILA top 10 all season, climbing as high as number two, the highest mark in program history. Wingate piled up the honors, with Grieco and Danny Riley both being consensus first team All-Americans. Grieco was named the SAC Player of the Year and SAC Athlete of the Year, while also being named the National Attackman of the Year by the USILA. The 2021 season saw the Bulldogs go 12-3 overall and 8-1 in the SAC, ranking in the USILA top 20 every week of the season. Wingate defeated UIndy in the national quarterefinals, the first NCAA Tournament victory in program history to reach the national semifinals. The Bulldogs piled up the awards in 2021, led by USILA National Lonpole Midfielder of the Year Reese Orman. The 2020 season saw the Bulldogs jump out to a 4-2 start, which included a 13-7 victory over #10 UIndy. Wingate opened league play with an 18-7 victory over Lincoln Memorial on March 7. That would turn out to be the final game of the season, with all spring sports coming to an abrupt halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2019 season saw the Bulldogs go 13-4 overall and 7-1 in league play to win the first regular season SAC title in program history to go along with a third consecutive SAC Tournament championship. Wingate earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three years and third time in program history. The Bulldog defense led the conference in goals-against average in 2019. Wingate had 10 players earn all-conference honors, including 2019 SAC Player of the Year Alex Llerandi. In his second season at Wingate in 2018, Boyle led the Bulldogs to an 11-5 record, going 7-1 in the SAC to finish in second place in the league standings. Wingate knocked off third-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne 12-9 in the SAC title game to capture a second straight SAC title. Wingate went 13-4 in Boyle's first season in 2017 as the Bulldogs earned their first trip to the NCAA play-offs since 2001 and just the second in program history. Wingate's victory at Queens in the SAC title game gave the 'Dogs their first ever SAC championship. The Bulldogs were ranked number nine nationally in the final regular season poll. Eleven student-athletes made the All-SAC team, led by senior attack Austin Murphy (’17), who led the league in total points and assists. Two Wingate University men’s lacrosse student-athletes were recognized by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association as 2017 NCAA Division II USILA/Nike All-America team members. Bulldog goalkeeper Will Sheridan (’18) was a second team All-America selection, while attack Llerandi received honorable mention laurels. Boyle came to Wingate after 16 seasons at Dowling College. He held a 148-73 record with the Golden Lions, leading the team to four NCAA tournament appearances and a national title in 2012. Dowling also appeared in the championship game in the 2006 season. Boyle was named the National Coach of the Year by the USILA the same year. He won the award again in 2010 when the Golden Lions appeared in the national semi-finals. In addition to his national awards, Boyle earned East Coast Conference Coach of the Year honors in 2006, 2010, 2012 and 2016. During his tenure at Dowling, Boyle coached 43 All-Americans, six of which went on to play professionally. Prior to taking over as Dowling’s head coach, Boyle served as the Golden Lions assistant from 1995-2000. Boyle has also served as an assistant coach for the Irish Lacrosse Team which competed in the 2002 World Championships in Perth, Australia.
