Tippie College of Business: A Comprehensive Overview

The Tippie College of Business, situated at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, stands as a distinguished institution with a rich history and commitment to excellence in business education. Established in 1921 as the College of Commerce, Tippie has evolved into one of the oldest and most highly-regarded business schools in the United States. This article delves into various aspects of the college, including its history, academic programs, student life, rankings, and notable features.

Historical Perspective

The genesis of the Tippie College of Business can be traced back to Isaac Althaus Loos, who laid the foundation by establishing the School of Political and Social Science. This school encompassed degrees in commerce, economics, and finance. By 1908, the curriculum had expanded to include nearly 40 courses, leading to the addition of "Commerce" to the school's name. The official establishment of the College of Commerce occurred in 1921, with an initial enrollment of approximately 100 students and a faculty of 23 members.

In the 1950s, the college underwent a reorganization, resulting in its division into six departments and a renaming to the College of Business Administration. A significant milestone in the college's history was achieved in 2008 when it became the new home for the Consortium Institute for Management and Business Analysis (CIMBA).

The college is named after Henry B. Tippie, a 1949 graduate, signifying the first time an academic division at the University of Iowa was named after an alumnus. The college's primary building is the Pappajohn Business Building, named in honor of John Pappajohn, a 1952 graduate and Des Moines venture capitalist.
