Service Academies

Service academies are prestigious institutions that offer a fully funded college education in exchange for a commitment to postgraduate military service. Upon graduating, students will receive an officer commission and a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree. These academies are highly competitive, with rigorous academic and physical requirements.

There are five service academies, one each for the Army, Air Force, Navy/Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marines. Service academies, while extremely rigorous, are quite prestigious. The free tuition, stellar academics, and monthly stipend make for competitive admission. On top of typical college application requirements, applicants must undergo a medical and fitness exam.

United States Military Academy (West Point)

West Point, or the US Military Academy, trains cadets for a future as an army officer. Located in West Point, NY, It’s known for its extremely rigorous routine and strict rules. The USMA, better known as West Point, is perhaps one of the best and most prestigious military academies in the world. That reputation isn't taken lightly. citizens are allowed to apply. There is also a strict honor code, and students are expected to not only do well academically, but build military leadership and athletic skills. There is no tuition at West Point, but students must begin active duty with the Army upon graduation.

Founded in 1802, it has a rich history of producing military leaders. The academy offers a rigorous academic program combined with military training. At a glance, West Point’s acceptance rate is 11%, while the average GPA is 4.0.

United States Naval Academy

The US Naval Academy, in Annapolis, MD, prepares cadets to enter the Navy or Marine Corps. Navy and Marine Corps ever since. Located on the former grounds of Fort Severn, the school's campus is a national landmark and is within easy driving distance to Washington, D.C. Like West Point, students at USNA need endorsement from a member of Congress to get accepted, and while 1,300 enter every year, only about 1,000 ever make it to graduation. In exchange for free tuition, graduates must serve in a branch of the military for at least five years after getting their degrees.

Established in 1845, the academy offers a Bachelor of Science degree and requires students to participate in various leadership and physical training programs. Founded in 1845, the school offers around 25 majors for its midshipmen.

United States Air Force Academy

The US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO, trains cadets for a career in the Air Force. Here, too, the school’s reputation for rigor precedes it. Cadets undergo a challenging academic program along with extensive military training. The academy offers a Bachelor of Science degree, and graduates are commissioned as Second Lieutenants in the Air Force. Academically, the academy offers 27 majors, and a chance to join their winning Cyber Competition team.

United States Coast Guard Academy

The US Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT, offers its cadets only nine majors to choose from, partly due to its small size. Undergraduate enrollment is roughly 1,050, about a quarter the size of other service academies. Students who wish to enter the Coast Guard upon graduation and appreciate a higher teacher-to-student ratio will appreciate this academy.

United States Merchant Marine Academy

Last but not least, the US Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY, provides training for future Merchant Marine Officers. While most people are pretty familiar with the duties of the Navy, this branch of the military is less understood. civilian and federally owned merchant vessels, which transport domestic and international cargo and passengers during peacetime. During times of war, the Merchant Marine reinforces the Navy.

Senior Military Colleges

Senior military colleges (SMCs) offer a blend of civilian and military life. At most of these colleges, students can choose to be civilians or cadets, the latter of which would require participation in the Corps of Cadets. For those in the Corps of Cadets, college life resembles that of service academies, with strict training schedules and rigorous physical requirements. Upon graduation, cadets can choose to enter the military, but they are under no obligation to do so. boast six senior military colleges.

Under both Army Regulation (AR) 145-1 and federal law, the ROTC programs at the senior military colleges are treated differently from those at other schools. In contrast with other colleges and universities: "Under full or total mobilization, the Secretary of the Army may withdraw the ROTC detachments without giving prior notice to the academic institution. The establishment of new SROTC detachments will not be authorized after full mobilization has been declared." All Military Science IV cadets at the SMCs will be commissioned and directed to attend the proper Officers Basic Course (OBC).

Virginia Military Institute (VMI)

Founded in 1839 in Lexington, Virginia, the Virginia Military Institute is the oldest state military college in the United States. Abraham Lincon dubbed the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, VA, the “West Point of the South.” Both schools do have startlingly beautiful fortress-style architecture. Another commonality? Unlike the other senior military colleges, every student who attends VMI is a cadet.

VMI has been called the "West Point of the South" because of its role during the Civil War and unlike any other senior military college in the United States, VMI enrolls military cadets only and awards bachelor degrees exclusively. In addition to the accomplishments of its graduates in civilian endeavors, VMI is the only military college in the United States to graduate the highest ranking four-star generals across three services: Two Marine Corps Commandants, Lemuel C. Shepherd, Jr. and Randolph M. Pate, and Chiefs of Staff of the Army, George C. Marshall and the Air Force, John P. Jumper. VMI is also the only SMC in the United States to graduate a five-star general: General of the Army George C.

It offers a rigorous academic program with a strong emphasis on military discipline and physical fitness. VMI graduates receive a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree and can pursue military or civilian careers.

The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina

The Citadel in Charleston, SC, is known for its size (and having the coolest name among senior military colleges). The Citadel, also known as The Military College of South Carolina, offers a unique educational experience that combines academic excellence with military discipline. It boasts about 2,300 members in its Corps of Cadets. All cadets receive mandatory ROTC training and can choose from five academic schools - business, education, engineering, humanities and social sciences, or science and mathematics. While entering cadets may feel beaten down by the notorious “Hell Week,” perks abound.

Cadets can pursue various undergraduate degrees and participate in leadership training programs. Members of the Cadet Corps are required to be enrolled in ROTC and approximately one third are commissioned into the six military services.

Texas A&M University

Texas A&M’s Corps of Cadets is one of the largest uniformed student bodies outside the service academies. Texas A&M University was established under the Morrill Act of 1862, and cadets began classes in 1876. During World War II, Texas A&M produced 20,229 students who served in combat. Within the school itself, its Corps of Cadets has around 2,500 members, who can choose from four major units. These units include the Air Force Wing, the Army Brigade, the Navy/Marine Regiment, and the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band. Moreover, its Corps of Cadets program enrolls approximately 500 new students per year, and comprises two-thirds of the student body.

While Texas A&M is a large public university, the Corps of Cadets offers a military-style environment for students interested in military careers.

Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech)

Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech), located in Blacksburg, Virginia, is one of only two major public universities to host a senior military college as part of a larger civilian university. The Corps of Cadets has existed since Virginia Tech's 1872 founding; membership was mandatory for all male students during their entire term at the school until 1924 when the requirement was reduced to two years. After World War II, prior-service students were not required to enter the Corps, and in 1964 Corps membership was made voluntary for all non-ROTC students.

However, these cadets must undergo additional training.

University of North Georgia

The University of North Georgia actually has five locations in Georgia. The Drill Field is both central to the cadet experience and located at the heart of the Dahlonega Campus. The University of North Georgia (UNG), also known as The Military College of Georgia, is located in Dahlonega, Georgia. Since its creation in 1873 as North Georgia Agricultural College, the college required undergraduate resident males to participate in the Corps of Cadets (the corps was optional for resident undergraduate females and all commuting or graduate students). Cadets rise at 6:15 AM, when civilian students across campus will hear the famous bugle call. Like at The Citadel, incoming cadets experience “Frog Week,” a memorable orientation.

Norwich University

The Military College of Vermont, the oldest senior military college and the "Birthplace of ROTC," Norwich University is a private university located in Northfield, Vermont. Founded in 1819 at Norwich, Vermont, as the American Literary, Scientific and Military Academy, it is the oldest of the non-federal Military Academies and currently the only private military college in the United States.

Military Junior Colleges

The four military junior colleges differ from service academies and senior military colleges in that they only last two years. Upon graduation, cadets receive an associate’s degree and can choose to enter the military or pursue a different career path. In addition, all offer the Early Commissioning Program, which provides a fully funded college education while allowing cadets to become commissioned officers in the Army Reserves after just two years. Students will then transfer to a different college to work toward a bachelor’s degree while beginning their military service (four to eight years, depending on active or reserve status).

New Mexico Military Institute (NMMI)

New Mexico Military Institute is a co-educational military junior college and high school. The New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, NM, is a small school, limiting enrollment to around 1,000 cadets annually. Along with the two-year Corps of Cadets program, students can choose from a number of academic specialties before obtaining their associate degree. All students receive cadet training, which takes place around the Hagerman Barracks.

It offers a structured environment with a focus on academic excellence and leadership training. NMMI graduates often transfer to senior military colleges or service academies.

Marion Military Institute

Marion Military Institute in Marion, AL, is the country’s oldest military junior college. Academically, the college offers students associate degrees in science and arts.

Georgia Military College

Georgia Military College in Milledgeville, GA, on the other hand, enrolls over 18,000 students annually. Offering several bachelor’s degree options alongside its associate degrees, cadets will find plenty of academic options here.

Valley Forge Military Academy and College

Valley Forge Military Academy and College in Wayne, PA, has a unique Corps of Cadets that is completely student-run. that has maintained British rank, drill, customs, and ceremonies. Nowhere else in America will you find a traditional mounted battalion, containing both a cavalry troop and artillery battery. One notable alumnus includes the writer J. D.

Additional Considerations for Aspiring Cadets

Nomination Process

An additional hurdle is the nomination process. You must receive a nomination from a congressman or the Vice-President of the United States. Each congressman is allowed only five slots at an academy. There is another way to receive a nomination. If you have been a member of a JROTC honor unit, the senior JROTC instructor can nominate individuals. For example, Marine Military Academy, a private college preparatory academy for boys in grades 7-12 in Harlingen, Texas is a Naval Honor School. The academy follows a Marine Corps-style training program and focuses on academic excellence, leadership, and physical fitness. Students are members of the Marine Corps JROTC.

Enlistment vs. Military College

If you’re a high schooler who feels certain about military service, you may be wondering whether to enlist or attend a military college. While both can be excellent options, attending a military college does impart several major benefits. First, graduating with a bachelor’s degree (and specialized training) will allow you to enter the military as an officer.

Culver Academies: All-Boys, All Girls, Grades 7-12 PG. Located in Culver, Indianna. This is not on the Boarding School Review list, but I would be remiss in not mentioning Culver. It is highly ranked by many review sites including FindingSchool, where it receives at A+. On the Wikipedia overview, they state that “Culver is a college preparatory boarding school in Culver, Indianna, which is composed of three entities: Culver Military Academy (CMA) for boys, Culver Girls Academy (CGA), and the Culver Summer Schools and Camps (CSSC).
Marine Military Academy: All Boys, Grades 7-12 PG. Located in Harlingen, Texas.
Fork Union Military Academy: All Males, Grades 7-12 PG. Located in Fork Union, VA. Fork Union Military Academy is a college prep Christian military boarding school.

Military Academies Around the World

While not a complete list (there are a lot of military academies out there, after all), we've tried to highlight some of the best, most rigorous, and most prestigious of these military academies in nations around the world.

The Royal Air Force College was originally established as a naval aviation training center during World War I, and reached official status as the world's first air academy in 1919. During World War II, the school stopped exclusively training officers and began working to train as many recruits as possible to fly in the British Air Force. For Brits who don't want to go into the Air Force, this military academy is another prestigious choice.
and Saint-Cyr in France. What is different about it, however, is that it is not a university and graduates do not earn a bachelor's degree. Instead, they embark on a rigorous training program to prepare them for leadership as an officer. The French Armed Forces may get a good ribbing from other nations, but that doesn't diminish the prestigious history and reputation of this military academy. Students at Saint-Cyr are put through a rigorous training program, and graduate with an M.A. or M.S. as commissioned officers.
This academy is China's answer to West Point for their own military students. Run by the state and located in Beijing, the school was founded in 1985 through the merger of several existing military and political schools.
You might not have heard of this school, but its graduates have been at the top of the Russian (and former USSR) military for years. Founded in 1936, the school was intended as a place for the best and the brightest officers of the Soviet Armed Forces to get additional training and eventually rise to the top of the ranks.
Created in 1953, the NDA offers a degree program and training for students who want to be officers in the Japan Self-Defense Force. There are a few differences between this school and others on this list, however. First, students are paid a salary while at school, as they are considered employees of the Ministry of Defense. Second, after graduation, students aren't done with their training, and will go on to Officer Candidate Schools in a military force of their choosing. Students who are especially interested in academics can also pursue master's and doctoral degrees through the school, as long as they are endorsed by supervisors.
Situated amid a scenic mountain landscape and overlooking Saldanha Bay, the school's campus is home to more than 300 men and women in training and 48 professors and other faculty members.
With a military history that goes back centuries, it's no surprise that Greece still prides itself on producing a solid military force. While today's students are no Spartans, they do receive a solid education while they're training to be officers in the Hellenic Army. The school was founded in 1828, and has produced soldiers that have not only fought in a number of important conflicts globally, but became scientists, authors, engineers, and professors who were all highly distinguished in their field.
All physically fit undergraduate students must take courses in military training. The school must establish a corps of cadets in which all cadets wear military uniforms when on campus.
