Transylvania University Scholarships for International Students: A Comprehensive Guide

Applying Test-Optional
If you choose not to submit ACT or SAT scores, you will need to provide either an essay or a graded paper as part of your application. Premier Scholarships
Students eligible for Premier Scholarships will be selected based on their application, essay, high school transcripts, resume (or a list of extracurricular activities), letters of recommendation, and test scores (if provided). To be considered for these scholarships, students must apply by December 1 (Early Action Deadline #2) and will receive further communication regarding the process.

Transilvania Academica Scholarship 2025 (Romania)
The Applications are open to apply for the Transilvania Academica Scholarship 2025 in Romania. It is a Fully Funded Scholarship for International students to Pursue a Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD programs from the Transilvania University. The Scholarship is open to international students from non-EU/EEA countries. The Objective of the Scholarship is to attract International students towards Transilvania University to increase the Visibility among students. There is no application fee to apply for this scholarship. After receiving the scholarship, the selected candidates will apply for the Admission online for Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD programs at Transilvania University.
Study Abroad Scholarships
Transylvania University provides scholarships for semester, summer, and May term abroad programs. Semester students can use their Transylvania award money for a GlobalTransy program, and all Federal and state financial aid along with outside scholarship grants may also be used.

Cardwell French Scholarship for Junior Year
This scholarship supports a student studying in France or another country where French is the primary language during their junior year. It is in addition to the approved use of other Transylvania awards, financial aid, and loans. Current sophomores are eligible to apply after consulting with the director of global and intercultural engagement and Transylvania’s French program. The application requires a cover letter detailing a plan of study, a two-page analysis in French of an article from Le Monde diplomatique, and completion of a semester abroad application. Eligible applicants will be interviewed in French.
Edward and Doris Coleman Endowed Travel Grant
The Art and Art History Program offers the Edward and Doris Coleman Endowed Travel Grant to Art or Art History majors for travel expenses on a Program-sponsored May term course. Applicants must be juniors or seniors with a declared major in Art or Art History, a 3.0 GPA or higher in their major, and demonstrated financial need. The application includes a two-page, double-spaced essay on a topic assigned by the professor, a resume, Art program GPA, and financial need assessment from the Financial Aid Office. The deadline for submission is December 1st.

Cultural Vistas Fellowship
This fellowship is designed for sophomore or junior year students who have not yet had the opportunity to study, intern, or live abroad. Preference is given to applicants from underrepresented groups, including Pell Grant recipients, veterans, first-generation college students, STEM majors, members of minority communities within the United States, and non-traditional students. Applicants should demonstrate an interest in civic engagement and youth involvement, and be passionate about the international exchange of ideas. One cohort of 4-5 fellows will intern in either Buenos Aires, Berlin, or Bangalore. Students applying for Argentina or Germany must have two years of university-level language study. The fellowship is open to students in all fields and includes a pre-departure orientation and a post-program seminar in New York City.

Graduate / Post B.A. Scholarships
- Fulbright Scholarships: Awards for graduate study, research, or teaching abroad. Includes round-trip transportation, tuition, and maintenance for one year in over 100 countries.
- The Rhodes Scholarships: Full tuition, fees, and stipend for two years of graduate study at the University of Oxford. Awarded to multi-talented students with proven intellectual and academic achievement, integrity, leadership ability, and physical vigor. Candidates must be nominated by Transylvania.
- The Gates Cambridge Scholarships: Full tuition, fees, and stipend for graduate study at the University of Cambridge. Applicants must have an exceptional record and be admitted to the University of Cambridge.
- British Marshall Scholarships: £19,000 (approximately \$28,500) per year for two years of graduate study at any British university. Applicants should have a GPA of at least 3.7 and hold a bachelor’s degree. Preference is given to candidates who combine high academic ability with the capacity to participate actively in British University life.
- Davies-Jackson Scholarships: Full tuition, fees, and stipend for two years of graduate study at the University of Cambridge. Designed for students with modest economic backgrounds who are among the first in their families to graduate from college. Note: Transylvania University is undergraduate only.
Application Process for Transylvania University
If applying to more than one of the 500+ colleges and universities that use the Common Application, it is recommended to complete the Common Application, which opens annually on Aug. The essay should be limited to 1-2 typed, double-spaced pages. If applying using the Common Application, instructions are provided for uploading the essay file.
Required Documents:
- Official secondary school transcript: Must be translated into English with a grading scale attached.
- Official test scores: International students from English-speaking countries, for whom English is their first language, or who have studied in English-taught programs, should follow guidelines for domestic students regarding test-optional choices.
- Proof of English Proficiency: Students for whom English is not their first language, or who are not from English-speaking countries, need to submit one of the following:
- SAT R (with CR minimum score in the range of 600-700)
- ACT (with minimum composite score of 30)
- TOEFL (minimum score in the range of 80)
- IELTS (minimum score in the range of 6)
- PTE Academic and PTE Academic Online (minimum score in the range of 52)
- Cambridge/UK O, AS, or A levels (passing)

- School official or teacher recommendation: A recommendation from a school official (counselor, principal) or a teacher with whom you have had class in the past two years is required.

- Transfer students should have a college or university instructor complete a recommendation unless they have graduated from secondary school within the past year.
- Official university transcripts (if applicable): If you have taken university courses during secondary school, you should provide a final official transcript of that coursework.

Transylvania offers many scholarships for designated groups of students. To apply for these scholarships, students must submit their application for admission by February 1 for enrollment beginning the following fall. Additional Scholarship Opportunities at Transylvania University
Pell Guarantee
The Pell Guarantee assures that full tuition and fees will be covered through a combination of institutional, federal, and state grants/scholarships for recent high school or homeschool graduates in Kentucky who are Pell Grant eligible. Students must submit the FAFSA, have a minimum 3.3 weighted GPA and apply for admission by February 1. Students will be automatically considered for eligibility upon application.
Appalachian Regional Healthcare Scholarship
Transylvania has partnered with Appalachian Regional Healthcare to give students from Appalachia the opportunity to earn scholarship money to Transy and return home to work for ARH in one of many career fields. Eligible academic programs include pre-health, pre-medical, pre-pharmacy, physical therapy, computer science, accounting, business management, and social services. Students selected for the scholarship program may receive up to \$15,000 over four years - in addition to other merit and need-based aid - and will have access to experiential learning opportunities during their undergraduate studies in the form of summer work, mentorships, and internships with ARH. Apply for admission to Transy by Dec. 1 for this scholarship consideration.
Program-Related Scholarships
These scholarships provide students with a minimum guaranteed scholarship based on their academic involvement with these programs. These awards cannot be combined with other merit-based scholarships but provide a baseline for academic awarding. If a student qualifies for a higher merit-based scholarship, the higher amount will be awarded.
- Participants in the Governor’s Scholars, Governor’s School for the Arts, and Governor’s School for Entrepreneurs programs receive a guaranteed minimum award of \$27,000 per year. (Kentucky Governor’s Scholars, Kentucky Governor’s School for the Arts, Kentucky Governor’s School for Entrepreneurs)
IB Scholarship
International Baccalaureate Programme participants can receive scholarships ranging from \$10,000/year (diploma courses) to \$18,000/year (full diploma candidates). ROTC Scholarships
Army ROTC scholarships offer tuition and fees for up to \$18,000, a \$600 textbook allowance, and a \$250 tax-free monthly stipend during the academic year for each year the student is a recipient. In addition, Transylvania will provide to each three- and four-year recipient at least the value of room and board. Recipients must enroll in Army ROTC courses, which are taught in partnership with the University of Kentucky on its campus. All Air Force scholarships are capped at various amounts: Type 1 has no cap, Type 2 is capped at \$15,000, and Type 7 is capped at \$9,000. Recipients receive a \$900 textbook allowance and a \$300-500 tax-free monthly stipend during the academic year. In addition, Transylvania will provide to each three- and four-year recipient at least the value of room and board.
Tuition Exchange Scholarships
are eligible to apply for Tuition Exchange scholarships. Students are awarded based on a variety of factors, such as leadership, involvement, financial need, interest in non-NCAA athletics, religious affiliation, legacy status, etc. For more information on these scholarships, please contact the Office of Admissions at 859-233-8242.
First Generation Scholarship
The First Generation Scholarship of $4,000 per year ($16,000 over four years) is offered to students who are admitted for fall 2025 or later and who will be in the first generation of their family to complete a college degree. This scholarship can be combined with other academic scholarships.
Legacy Scholarship
Students admitted for fall 2025 or later who have a parent, step-parent, grandparent, step-grandparent, sibling or step-sibling that is considered a Transylvania alum will receive a renewable $3,000 scholarship ($12,000 over four years) that can be combined with other academic scholarships. Siblings of current Transylvania students are also eligible.
Cardwell French Language Scholarship
The Douglas and Marilyn Cardwell French Language Scholarship provides up to \$1,500 per year to support the study of French at Transy. Recipients of the scholarship must take at least one French class per year (French level 3 or above) and meet with the Director of Global and Intercultural Engagement once per term. Majoring or minoring in French is not required.
DOC Scholarships
As a result of this historic relationship, Transylvania is pleased to provide scholarships for DOC members to attend Transylvania. Newly admitted students who indicate a DOC affiliation on their application for admission and provide verification of membership in a DOC congregation will be awarded a $3,000 scholarship per year ($12,000 over four years). Proof of membership is required in order to receive this scholarship. This is a competitive scholarship.
Austin E. Knowlton Memorial Scholarship
The Austin E. Knowlton Memorial Scholarship is awarded to students who are residents of Ohio planning to major in a STEM field. Interested Ohio students may contact the Transylvania financial aid office for more details. This is a competitive scholarship.
Transylvania Endowment Grants
Transylvania offers grants that are based on merit and financial need. Transy has a wide range of scholarships, from \$12,000 up to full tuition and fees. All you have to do is apply and be admitted, and you’re automatically eligible for academic scholarship consideration. In addition to scholarships, you may be eligible for other financial assistance including grants, loans or campus employment.
Pell Guarantee
The Pell Guarantee ensures that full tuition and fees will be covered for Pell Grant‑eligible students through a combination of institutional, federal and state grants/scholarships.

Additional Financial Information
Semester Abroad
For approved GlobalTransy semester study abroad programs, students pay their regular Transylvania tuition (including general fee), plus standard room and board (depending on program) and can continue existing payment plans. A student may use 100% of their awarded institutional, state & federal aid, loans, and outside scholarships. Students pay for other out-of-pocket expenses such as passport and visa fees, travel to consulates, international airfare, local transportation, meals, independent travel and personal expenses.
For other program choices, Transylvania will pay an approved study abroad program a maximum of \$12,000 of a student’s program fee. Students are responsible to pay their study abroad program for the balance of fees if the cost of their study abroad program exceeds the maximum amount allowed. Once approved to study abroad for a semester, a student may use 50% of their Transylvania aid, plus all federal and state aid, loans, and fees directly to their off-campus program.
Summer Abroad
For summer study abroad programs students pay the program fee directly to the program provider.
May Term
Students participating in a May term travel course will pay the program fee directly to Transylvania.
