Trinity Western University: Programs, Admission, and Future Developments
Trinity Western University (TWU), a private Christian institution with campuses in Langley and Richmond, British Columbia, has been providing higher education since 1962. This article delves into the programs offered at TWU, admission requirements, and recent developments, including its partnership with Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (TEDS).
A Legacy of Evangelical Leadership: TWU and TEDS
TWU and TEDS, both evangelical Christian institutions rooted in the Evangelical Free Church of America, share a common faith and mission. Recently, they entered into a formal agreement for TWU to assume ownership of TEDS. This move aims to ensure the continued legacy of TEDS as a globally recognized evangelical training ground for church leaders.
In Fall 2026, TEDS at TWU plans to welcome its first class on the Langley, B.C. campus. TEDS Dean David W. Pao is overseeing the transition process as interim president, starting July 1, 2025, while also remaining dean of TEDS.
Strategic Benefits of the Partnership
The decision to join TWU was driven by the increasing challenges TEDS has faced in recent years, which are echoed across seminaries in North America. The partnership offers clear financial benefits by allowing TEDS to share buildings, resources, and services as its programs grow. This move is also shaped by a shared mission, theological continuity, and a vision for strategic growth on both sides. Staying on the current Bannockburn campus, designed for a smaller university, would undermine good stewardship and represent a loss of opportunity. By directing resources previously used for maintaining the Bannockburn campus toward programs and people, TEDS can have a stronger impact on the church in North America and around the world. TEDS has an incredible opportunity to thrive as part of a large theologically and missionally aligned Christian university.
Academic Programs and Accreditation
TEDS is accredited by the Association of Theological Schools (ATS) and intends to maintain this accreditation during the transition to TWU. Current TEDS students will generally be accepted as students at TWU, with their TEDS coursework applicable to their degree programs.

While several core programs will carry over, some will be restructured to serve a wider group of students more flexibly. These programmatic decisions are based on mission alignment, student interest, and available resources to ensure a strong academic offering, and are being made in consultation with TEDS’ accrediting agencies. Incoming students will still be able to enroll in programs such as the MDiv, MA/TS, ThM, DMin, and PhD.
Important Dates and Application Information
Applications for TEDS at TWU will open in late 2025, with the first student intake in September 2026.
Student Services and Support
Student services, including support for international students, will continue through the Student Life and International Student and Scholar offices. TWU is a Title IV-approved school, ensuring that U.S. citizens will remain eligible for federal loans and Federal Work Study. New international students receive Guard.Me insurance for their first three months, after which they must register for British Columbia’s Medical Services Plan (MSP).
Transcript Requests
Transcripts can still be requested through the National Student Clearinghouse. TEDS maintains a secure and accessible record of all students’ transcripts, ensuring they can be requested at any time.
Housing
Married student housing is not available on campus, and most graduate students will need to live off campus.

Counseling Program Transition
Due to the planned sale of the Bannockburn campus and in accordance with the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) accreditation requirements, the counseling program will not continue beyond spring 2026. Partnerships have been established with other CACREP-accredited counseling programs, including Grace College & Seminary (Winona Lake, IN, online), Indiana Wesleyan University (online and in person), and Wheaton College (in person), to provide transfer options for impacted students. These partnerships include two programs that offer a residential component, which is especially essential for international students.
Students unsure whether they can complete their degree by May 2026 are encouraged to contact Dr. Pao. Students on a student visa should plan to register for fall classes at TEDS to maintain their visa status. Once teach-out arrangements are confirmed, the university will assist with transferring visas to the new institution and dropping fall courses after the visa transfer is successful.
Operations During Transition
For the 2025-26 academic year, daily operations will largely remain unchanged while integration planning proceeds. Transition teams will oversee integration, with governance transfer guiding decisions. Faculty contracts will be renewed for 2025-26, and employment offers to selected faculty will be offered along with transition support. Current students’ programs will be preserved, with the exception of MA/MHC students not scheduled to finish their degree by May 2026.
