Truman State University Scholarships for International Students
Truman State University provides numerous scholarship opportunities for international students seeking to pursue higher education. These scholarships, primarily merit-based, significantly reduce the financial burden of tuition, making Truman a more accessible option for talented students worldwide.
Scholarship Opportunities for International Students
Truman State University recognizes outstanding academic performance and extracurricular involvement by offering a significant scholarship program for international students. Scholarships can be awarded for up to 50% of tuition or more. Students are automatically considered for this scholarship when they apply, and no separate application is necessary. The scholarships are renewable for up to 8 semesters (4 years) by maintaining a 3.25 Truman grade point average.
Approximately 85-90% of new international students receive scholarship awards that can significantly lower tuition costs, often reducing the yearly bill to $7,000-$11,000 for high-achieving applicants.
Merit-Based Scholarships
International students are eligible for academic scholarships from Truman. In fact, approximately 85% of all new international students receive some financial assistance through a scholarship. These scholarships are even renewable, providing assistance to you for up to four years. Students only need to meet the Scholarship Renewal Guidelines to continue the scholarship.
Automatic and Competitive Scholarships
Completion of your undergraduate application for admission will provide automatic consideration for both automatic and competitive scholarships without requiring additional steps from you. The Office of Admission provides scholarship packages based on your merits and academic success. Many of these awards are stackable and renewable for up to eight semesters at Truman.

Specific Scholarship Programs
Truman State University offers a variety of scholarship programs tailored to recognize different academic achievements and leadership qualities:
- Presidential Honorary Scholarship: This scholarship is awarded at the time of admission.
- International Baccalaureate (IB) Scholarship: Truman State University recognizes the challenging IB curriculum. Students who complete the IB Diploma will be awarded a $2000 scholarship per academic year for up to 4 years (8 semesters). IB Diploma Candidate status must be noted on HS transcript for consideration. $1,000 for students living off campus.
- A-Level Scholarship: Truman recognizes the challenging A-Level curriculum by offering transfer of credit for the successful completion of many A-Level examinations. The amount of transfer credit awarded will depend on the score received. Students must achieve a grade of C or higher to receive transfer credit for qualified A-Levels. In order to receive transfer credit, an original grade report must be sent from the A-Level Board Examination Board directly to Truman State University.
- CAPE Scholarship: The Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Exam is designed to provide certification to students in the Caribbean who wish to further their studies (after completing a minimum of five years of secondary education). Truman State University recognizes the challenging nature of CAPE by offering transfer of credit to students that receive I-IV on some exams.
- General John J. Pershing Scholarship: Top candidates have exceptional academic and co-curricular accomplishments and are typically in the top 3% of their HS class with ACT or SAT scores in the top 3% nationally. Application with ACT/SAT test score, including essay AND activities resume, must be complete prior to Dec. 1 for consideration. Approximately twelve awards annually. The Pershing scholarship covers the cost of full-time tuition and the average cost of room and board, plus a one-time $4,000 study abroad stipend.
- President John R. Kirk Scholarship: Top candidates have exceptional academic and co-curricular accomplishments and are typically in the top 3% of their HS class with ACT or SAT scores in the top 3% nationally. Application with ACT/SAT test score, including essay AND activities resume, must be complete prior to Dec. 1 for consideration. The Kirk scholarship is $23,000 for out-of-state students and $17,000 for in-state students. This should cover all of the full-time tuition cost and a significant portion of room and board.
- Harry S. Truman Leadership Scholarship: Missouri residents who demonstrate impactful classroom, school and/or community leadership. Application with ACT/SAT test score, including essay AND activities resume, must be complete prior to Dec. 1 for consideration. Limited number of 2025 awards. The HSTL scholarship is $15,000 and only in-state students were eligible.
Application Process and Requirements
Students are automatically considered for scholarships when they apply. All materials you submit with your application for admission are reviewed in the competitive scholarship selection process. Competitive scholarship selections occur December through early February.
Additional Financial Aid Opportunities
Foundation Scholarships
The Truman State University Foundation provides more than 400 Foundation Scholarships. The criterion for eligibility varies for each scholarship. Current Truman students can apply for scholarships established through the Truman State University Foundation which works hard to find alumni and friends who value the hard work and dedication Truman students put toward their education. To apply, students should log in to TruView, go to the Student Tab, then Student Finances, and click on Foundation Scholarship Applications. Applications for Study Abroad Scholarships are available from November to mid-January.
Study Abroad Scholarships and Loans
Affordability is one of Truman’s core values and there are several ways to make international study an affordable option. With the help of Truman’s academic scholarships, federal financial aid and other financial assistance, a study abroad experience may be more attainable than you think. This is an investment that will pay you dividends for years to come. If you have an academic scholarship at Truman State University, you can use it in most every case to cover the costs of your study abroad program. Please speak to the Financial Aid office to discuss your options.
The Truman State University Foundation offers around $90,000 per year in scholarships to students who are studying abroad. Students applying for study abroad programs will be automatically considered for Foundation scholarships when they complete their TruView Study Abroad application by the program’s deadline.

A limited number of cultural loans may be authorized to encourage participation in “study abroad” programs. The maximum loan is the cost of the trip, minus other financial aid, but not more than $6,000.
Truman State University offers Pershing Scholars the opportunity to participate in one study-abroad program during their attendance at the University. This is an excellent chance to learn about life in another country while earning credit toward a degree. Truman State University will cover up to $4,000 toward the cost of the trip. If the student meets the above criteria, then they must submit a completed Pershing Stipend Cultural Experience Application to the Center for International Education Abroad. *The stipend can be used during May interim on a case-by-case basis.

Truman State University is linked to scholarships that can reduce costs in meaningful ways. Here are a few strong options prioritized by funding level.
- Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship: Federal Pell Grant Recipients are eligible for the Benjamin A. Not sure how this scholarship will benefit you? Don’t worry. We have Gilman Scholarship recipients who can help answer any of your questions. The Benjamin A. citizen undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies or credit-bearing, career-oriented internships abroad. Award recipients are chosen by a competitive selection process and must use the award to defray eligible study or intern abroad costs.
- Dr. IEFA: Dr. IEFA is the premier resource for financial aid, college scholarship and grant information for US and international students wishing to study abroad.
- National Security Education Program (NSEP) David L. Boren Scholarships: District Study Abroad Scholarships are awarded to fund one to two semesters of undergraduate or graduate study abroad. Applicants must have completed at least one year of undergraduate study prior to grant-funded study. Study must be in one of the six areas of focus.
- Sigma Delta Pi Scholarships and Stipends: Scholarships and stipends offered by Sigma Delta Pi: Collegiate Hispanic National Honor Society.
- Study Abroad Scholarships: A study abroad scholarship is a monetary award for students to use toward the expenses of their program such as travel, course, credits, books and lodging. Students must apply for scholarships and some can be very competitive while others are underutilized.
- The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program: The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is a fully funded summer overseas language and cultural immersion program for American undergraduate and graduate students. With the goal of broadening the base of Americans studying and mastering critical languages and building relationships between the people of the United States and other countries, CLS provides opportunities to a diverse range of students from across the United States at every level of language learning. On-Campus Employment Opportunities
Students who hold an F-1 visa may work on campus from the first day of the semester. Each student is limited to 20 hours per week while classes are in session or 39 hours per week during breaks and holidays. The student is responsible for obtaining his/her own on-campus job if he/she so wishes. Truman State University does not provide job placement.
The holder of an F-1 visa may not work off-campus without permission of the USCIS. The student may apply to the USCIS for off-campus work permission after the completion of one academic year (nine months). The applicant must submit documents proving severe unforeseen ‘financial need.’ Since the application process takes approximately 90 days, students should not plan on working off-campus for at least 12 months from arrival.

Important Considerations for International Students
Proof of Financial Support
You must prove one year of financial support and project financial support for the rest of your education. law requires that the University has this proof of financial support before we can issue the I-20 Certificate of Eligibility with which you apply for the student visa.
Scholarship Renewal
These scholarships are even renewable, providing assistance to you for up to four years. Students only need to meet the Scholarship Renewal Guidelines to continue the scholarship.
Taxes on Scholarships
Federal taxes for scholarships that cover room, board, meal plans, and other personal expenses for international, non-resident students.
Additional Expenses
The housing and meals estimate is based on the cost of a double occupancy room in Missouri Hall and the 15 meals per week meal plan. Students should budget based on their actual housing and meal plan selection. For the first semester, all incoming students are assessed fees for orientation and any TB testing or vaccinations required by student health.
