Understanding the UAB GPA Calculation Method: A Comprehensive Guide
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) employs a specific methodology for calculating a student's Grade Point Average (GPA). This article aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of this calculation method, covering various aspects from course registration to the awarding of degrees and how GPA plays a vital role in academic standing and honors.
Registration and Academic Terms
Before delving into the GPA calculation, it's essential to understand the academic structure at UAB. The university operates on a calendar year divided into three academic terms: the fall semester, the spring semester, and the summer semester. The fall and spring semesters each consist of approximately 14 weeks of classes, followed by one week of final examinations. The summer term consists of five sessions, each with its own time and format.
Students are responsible for selecting and registering for courses necessary for reasonable progress toward the degree sought. Early registration in April allows current students to enroll in fall semester classes on a priority basis. The Office of the Registrar plays a crucial role in registration, recording, and reporting grades; maintaining current and permanent records on all students; enforcing rules on academic warning, probation, and suspension; certifying students for graduation; and issuing transcripts.
Course Levels and Prerequisites
Courses are categorized into lower division (100-299) for freshmen and sophomores and upper division (300-499) for juniors and seniors. FYE (First-Year Experience) courses serve as a gateway to undergraduate education, bridging the gap between high school and university expectations. UAB’s undergraduate programs culminate in a capstone requirement, providing a summative opportunity for students to apply their knowledge to an original project.
Prerequisites are enforced for UAB students, but waived for transient students. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that prerequisites for a course are met before registering for the course. Advisors are available to help with this determination. All students who wish to register for a math course must take a math placement assessment, with exceptions for minimum ACT/SAT scores or earned transfer credit. Students who have not earned credit for English Composition (EH 101) with a grade of C or better must take an English placement assessment, with similar exceptions.

Credit Hours and Course Load
The unit of credit at UAB is the semester hour. Course descriptions indicate the number of semester hours that may be earned for a particular course. One semester hour of lecture course credit is awarded for 13-15 contact hours per semester. One semester hour of laboratory credit is awarded for approximately 30 hours of work in the laboratory. A standard course load for a full-time student is 15 semester hours of course work in a semester, with at least 12 semester hours required for full-time status.
Grading System and Quality Points
UAB uses a letter grading system, with each grade assigned a specific number of quality points. These quality points are crucial in calculating the GPA. Here's a breakdown:
- A: 4.0 quality points per semester hour (superior performance)
- B: 3.0 quality points per semester hour (adequate performance)
- C: 2.0 quality points per semester hour (performance minimally adequate for a graduate student)
- F: 0 quality points per semester hour
The plus sign added to a grade raises the points awarded by 0.33 points per hour. A minus sign lowers the points awarded by 0.33 points. For example, each hour of "C+" earns 2.33 grade points.
For undergraduate courses, passing grades are "A+," "A," "A-," "B+," "B," "B-," "C+," "C," "C-," "D+," "D," and "D-."
GPA Calculation: A Step-by-Step Guide
A student's GPA is determined by dividing the total quality points awarded by a student’s semester hours attempted. The GPA is rounded to the third (thousands) decimal.

Here's a step-by-step breakdown of the calculation:
- Identify GPA Hours: Determine the number of credit hours for each course where a letter grade ("A," "B," "C," "D," or "F," and any pluses or minuses) was received.
- Calculate Quality Points per Course: Multiply the quality points associated with the grade earned in each course by the number of credit hours for that course.
- Calculate Total Quality Points: Sum the quality points earned in all courses.
- Calculate GPA: Divide the total quality points by the total GPA hours.
Example:
Let's say a student takes three courses:
- Course 1: 3 credit hours, Grade A (4.0 quality points)
- Course 2: 4 credit hours, Grade B (3.0 quality points)
- Course 3: 3 credit hours, Grade C (2.0 quality points)
- GPA Hours: 3 + 4 + 3 = 10 hours
- Quality Points per Course:
- Course 1: 3 hours * 4.0 = 12 quality points
- Course 2: 4 hours * 3.0 = 12 quality points
- Course 3: 3 hours * 2.0 = 6 quality points
- Total Quality Points: 12 + 12 + 6 = 30 quality points
- GPA: 30 quality points / 10 GPA hours = 3.0 GPA
Types of GPA
UAB calculates two types of GPAs:
- Overall GPA: This includes all work completed at the collegiate level, including work completed at The University of Alabama as well as work completed at other postsecondary institutions and accepted for credit at The University of Alabama in accordance with the Transfer Credit Policy.
- Institutional GPA: This is comprised solely of work completed at The University of Alabama.
Both the overall and institutional GPA calculations take into account all attempted work that comprise each individual GPA.
Important Grade Notations and Their Impact
Several grade notations can appear on a student's transcript, each with its own implications:

- P (Passing): Signifies satisfactory work in pass/not pass courses. It does not affect the GPA.
- N (No Grade Reported): A temporary notation used when the instructor does not assign a grade by the deadline. It is automatically changed to an "F" if not replaced with a letter grade by the end of the following term. A notation of no grade submitted may not be used to meet a prerequisite requirement.
- I (Incomplete): A temporary notation indicating that the student has performed satisfactorily but has been unable to finish all course requirements due to unforeseen circumstances. It automatically changes to an "F" if not replaced with a letter grade by the end of the next semester. A grade of "IN" may not be used to satisfy a prerequisite requirement. A student will not be allowed to graduate with an “IN” grade on their academic transcript for any course required for the degree.
- W (Withdrawn): Assigned by the Office of the Registrar reflecting an administrative action initiated by the student in accordance with regulations governing withdrawal from courses.
- AU (Audit): Auditors receive no credit toward a degree, and an “AU” grade appears on the transcript. The credit received when auditing a course does not count toward the student's verification of full, half, or less than half-time enrollment status.
- FS/NS: Assigned to students that registered for, but failed to begin attendance in any or all classes. The “FS” and “NS” grades require the submission of a Last Attend Date.
Academic Standing and Probation
Maintaining a good academic standing is crucial for students at UAB. For a graduate student to maintain good academic standing in the Graduate School, they must maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 (B average) and an overall satisfactory performance on pass/not pass courses, as well as not be on probation for an academic integrity violation. A degree-seeking or non-degree-seeking graduate student, who, at the end of any semester, fails to meet the criteria to maintain good academic standing will be placed on academic probation. Students on academic probation must re-establish good academic standing within the next two semesters during which they are enrolled at UAB.
Grade Replacement Policy
Graduate students may repeat a course one (1) time in an effort to improve grades and/or to improve understanding of the course content only with the permission of the graduate program. A graduate student who repeats a course taken at UAB and earns a better grade the second time may request a grade replacement in which the grade for the first course be excluded from their GPA calculation. The grade replacement policy may be used a maximum of two (2) times, only once for any course, which allows a student to use grade replacement for two different courses.
Academic Integrity and Conduct
UAB expects all members of its academic community to function according to the highest ethical and professional standards. The Student Conduct Code promotes honesty, integrity, accountability, rights and responsibilities expected of students consisted with the core missions of the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Behavior that violates UAB standards of conduct listed within the Student Conduct Code and elsewhere will be subject to disciplinary action through the appropriate conduct process.
Graduation Requirements and Honors
Students are subject to the catalog policies in effect at the time of their most recent admission as a degree-seeking student, with some exceptions. At least 25 percent of the total semester hours required for graduation must be taken at UAB. The minimum total credit hours required for a baccalaureate degree is 120 semester hours. A minimum C average in the major is required for graduation.
The Higher Education grade point average is used in conferring academic honors at graduation and is based on all college work attempted.
Voluntary Medical Withdrawal Policy
The Voluntary Medical Withdrawal Policy at UAB establishes procedures to follow when a student suffers from a physical, emotional, or psychological condition that significantly impairs the student's ability to function successfully or safely as a student. Medical withdrawal, when approved, withdraws a student from all courses for a given semester/term. Once a Medical Withdrawal has been approved, the Office of the University Registrar/Graduate School will assign a grade of “W” on the official transcript.
