Unlocking Your Potential: A Guide to UAH Scholarships
The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) recognizes and rewards students who demonstrate academic excellence and potential. Whether you're a high-achieving high school graduate or a transfer student, UAH offers a variety of scholarship opportunities to help you finance your education. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the scholarships available at UAH, including academic merit scholarships, competitive scholarships, and specific scholarships like the UAH Space Camp Scholarship and the Alabama G.I. Dependents Scholarship.
Automatic Consideration for Academic Scholarships
UAH automatically considers all new first-time freshmen and transfer applicants for Academic Scholarships. No separate scholarship application is required for these awards. These scholarships are four-year awards, applicable to fall and spring semesters, and are renewable each semester based on full-time student status and satisfactory academic progress. The award amounts are determined by a student's high school GPA, ACT or SAT superscore, and residency status. UAH encourages students to take the ACT and/or SAT multiple times to maximize their potential scholarship award.
Important Update Regarding the ACT Science Section
It is important to note a recent change regarding the ACT test. ACT has made the Science section of the test optional. In light of this, UAH has decided it will not consider the Science section of the ACT for admissions or scholarships for the 2026-2027 application cycle. This clarification is specifically for students applying for the Summer and Fall 2026 terms.
Competitive Scholarships: Beyond Academic Merit
In addition to automatic Academic Scholarships, UAH offers competitive scholarships funded by alumni and friends of the university. These scholarships provide further assistance to students and require a separate application.
Applying for Competitive Scholarships
To apply for competitive scholarships, you must first be admitted to UAH. Once admitted, you can access the UAH Scholarship Application, a comprehensive form used to determine eligibility for all competitive scholarships. Student eligibility is based on a variety of criteria, including academic interests and achievements, special talents, and demonstrated leadership.

When completing the application, you will need to select your desired Aid Year. After submitting your application, monitor your my.UAH account for award offers. You will need to select each offer’s drop-down box to either accept or decline each offer. Be aware that there may be a time limit to accept a competitive scholarship offer.
Priority Application Deadline
Submitting your scholarship application by the priority date is highly recommended. Students who meet this deadline will be considered in the first round of scholarship recipient selection and will be considered for all scholarships awarded for that academic year. Scholarships may still be awarded after the first round, so it's always beneficial to apply, even if you miss the priority date.

The Alabama G.I. Dependents Scholarship, administered by the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs, helps the dependents of Alabama’s disabled veterans fund their education. This scholarship provides valuable support to those who have family members who have served our country.
Understanding Your Financial Aid
UAH is committed to helping students understand and manage their financial aid. The university uses the Cost of Attendance (COA) when determining your eligibility for need-based financial aid. The COA includes estimated expenses to assist you in your budget planning process. For another estimate of your cost of attendance, you can use the Net Price Calculator available on the UAH website.
Outside Scholarship Opportunities
In addition to UAH-sponsored scholarships, you may also be eligible for third-party scholarships. UAH does not fund or assist in the selection process for outside scholarships but maintains a list of outside scholarship opportunities as a service to its students.
How to Handle Outside Scholarship Funds
If you receive an outside scholarship, the donor should clearly identify the scholarship recipient on the check stub or in an accompanying letter, along with any specific requirements or instructions. Checks should be mailed to:
