UC Davis University Grant Opportunities: Advancing Research and Supporting Faculty
UC Davis is committed to fostering a vibrant research environment by providing diverse grant opportunities to support faculty and staff researchers. These resources aim to drive innovation, facilitate collaboration, and ultimately improve outcomes in various fields.
Funding for Cancer Research
The UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center has received a significant boost in its efforts to combat pancreatic cancer. A $2 million grant from the Mark Foundation for Cancer Research will propel research aimed at detecting early warning signs of this deadly disease.
Detecting Pancreatic Cancer Early
Pancreatic cancer is known for its low survival rate, with only a small percentage of patients surviving five years after diagnosis. The funding from the Mark Foundation supports a team led by Julie L. Sutcliffe, co-director of the UC Davis Center of Molecular and Genomic Imaging, to develop new imaging tools. These tools are designed to detect early warning signs of pancreatic cancer before it fully forms, which could significantly improve outcomes for patients through earlier detection and intervention. Sutcliffe's team includes researchers from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Johns Hopkins University.
Innovative Imaging Techniques
Sutcliffe's team is employing PET scans and small, safe radioactive tags to detect microscopic changes in pancreatic duct cells that can lead to pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), the most common type of pancreatic cancer. The goal is to identify pre-cancerous 'PanIN' lesions before they develop into full-blown cancer.
Impact of the Grant
Julie L. Sutcliffe: “This grant gives us a powerful opportunity to move pancreatic cancer research forward. PanIN lesions have not been visible with conventional imaging and the ability to non-invasively detect and monitor PanIN allows us the opportunity to intercept PDAC at its earliest stages. Ultimately, our goal is to bring new options and real hope to patients who urgently need better outcomes.”

This grant represents a significant investment in advancing pancreatic cancer research, with the goal of enabling earlier intervention and improving outcomes for patients. By focusing on early detection, the researchers hope to give patients better chances of successful treatment and recovery.
Resources for Faculty and Staff Researchers
UC Davis provides a range of resources geared toward faculty and staff researchers seeking funding opportunities. While resources are available, graduate students looking for funding should contact the Office of Graduate Studies.
Moderated Listservs
These listservs distribute information about important funding opportunities.
Pivot
Pivot is the most comprehensive database of funding opportunities available. Researchers can create saved searches and review subject-specific lists of opportunities hand-picked by Office of Research staff.
Grants.gov
Grants.gov is the database where all federal grant-making agencies are required to publish their funding opportunities.

Philanthropy News Digest
Philanthropy News Digest serves as a source for private foundations and other philanthropic organizations. Users can view a list of RFPs, search by keywords, or browse by subject.
Internal Research Funding Programs
UC Davis also offers internal funding programs to support researchers. Note that some programs may be suspended.
Principal Investigator (PI) Bridge Program: [PROGRAM SUSPENDED]
This program provides one-time funding to PIs who have lost or will lose their primary extramural funding. Funds ensure the continuation of a research project for an interim period until extramural support can be re-established. To apply, fill out the Internal Research Funding Form.
Publication Assistance Fund: [PROGRAM SUSPENDED]
The Publications Assistance Fund assists ladder faculty, particularly those early in their career, with the publication of books or monographs and exhibition or performance of works of art representative of University of California standards. The intent of the fund is to defray certain costs that would not normally be covered by the publisher, thus enhancing the possibility of the work to be published. This program is co-sponsored by the Office of Research and the participating colleges/schools.
UC Research Initiatives
UC Research Initiatives offer unique opportunities for collaboration and seed funding across the full breadth of academic disciplines and scholarship at the UC, from the arts and humanities to engineering, natural sciences, social sciences, education, and medicine.
