A History of UCF Football Uniforms: From Citronauts to Space Knights

The UCF Knights football team has a rich and evolving uniform history, reflecting the university's growth, traditions, and unique connections to the space program. From humble beginnings in the late 1970s to becoming a modern "DripU," UCF's uniforms have become a source of pride and excitement for players and fans alike.

Early Years and the Rise to Division I-A

UCF first fielded a varsity football team in 1979 as an NCAA Division III program. Less than a year after Dr. Trevor Colbourn envisioned a football program for the university, UCF played its first game on September 22, 1979, against St. Leo University, winning with a 21-0 shutout. The Knights quickly ascended through the NCAA divisions, becoming the first program in NCAA history to play in all four divisions of football (III, II, I-AA, and I-A) by 1996.

During this period, the team's look began to take shape. Coach Gene McDowell led the Knights to their first winning season since 1979, with a 6-5 record in 1986. In 1987, they earned their first trip to the Division II playoffs. By 1990, the program had moved up to Division I-AA, achieving a 10-4 record and a trip to the I-AA playoffs in their first year.

The Independent Years and Entrance into Conference Play

After six years as a Division I-A independent, UCF joined the Mid-American Conference (MAC) as a football-only member in 2002. However, the increased travel burden and lack of natural rivals led UCF to explore other conference options. In 2005, UCF became a member of Conference USA (C-USA).

In 2007, the team rebranded, dropping the "Golden" from their name to become the "UCF Knights" and preparing for their move to the new on-campus Bright House Networks Stadium (now FBC Mortgage Stadium). That year, they won their first Conference Championship title, defeating Tulsa 44-25 and earning a berth in the 2007 Liberty Bowl.

The O'Leary Era: Tradition and Innovation

Under head coach George O'Leary, the Knights achieved significant success, including two Conference USA Championships (2007, 2010) and an American Athletic Conference championship in 2013. O'Leary unveiled a template for uniforms of "The Fighting Knights": black jerseys, gold pants, and gold helmets.

The Space Game: A Unique Tradition

UCF's connection to the space program has become a defining element of its football identity. The university was founded in 1963, the same year FTU first partnered with nearby Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Air Base. UCF is home to NASA's Center for Lunar and Asteroid Science, and 30% of Kennedy Space Center employees hold UCF degrees.

The annual "Space Game" began in 2017 and features specially designed uniforms that pay tribute to this connection. These uniforms result from a year-long collaboration between Nike, UCF's equipment operations staff, and athletics marketing personnel. The "Space Game" also includes a merchandising line featuring the old-school Citronaut logo, a nod to the university's early years when it was known as Florida Technical University.

Each year's "Space Game" uniform has a unique theme and design elements. For example, the 2019 "Rendezvous With the Stars" uniform paid tribute to the Apollo 11 mission from 1969 and featured:

  • Helmets hand-painted to resemble the dark and light sides of the moon, with the phrase "One Small Step For Man" on the rear.
  • The number 321 on the front bumper of each helmet, recognizing the area code of the Space Coast of Florida.
  • Constellations representing roads and buildings on the UCF campus.
  • A large Pegasus constellation on the sleeves.
  • The Citronaut on the front of the pants.
  • Custom Nike pants with a red and blue USA mark to match the Apollo 11 rocket.
  • The outline of the Arecibo telescope.
  • Flight coordinates showing the alignment of the 50-yard line of Spectrum Stadium with Launch Complex 39A.
  • A shape of the planet named after UCF (UCF-1.01).

The 2018 Space Game featured constellation patterns on the pant stripes, shoulder pads, and helmet stripe, with blue colors representing the water and sky at Cape Canaveral. The 2017 game featured a unique helmet and a mission patch, with the helmet stripe representing the five sections of the Saturn V rocket.

In 2023, the theme was “Reaching New Horizons” to highlight space research projects led by UCF students, faculty and graduates along with honoring the team’s first season in the Big 12 conference.

The Frost and Heupel Years: DripU Emerges

Under head coaches Scott Frost and Josh Heupel, UCF's football program experienced a period of unprecedented success and further innovation in uniform design. The team's explosive, up-tempo offense under Frost led to a 6-7 record in 2016, followed by a 13-0 perfect season in 2017, including a Peach Bowl victory over Auburn.

During this era, UCF's uniforms became known for their variety and creativity. The team wore 62 unique looks between 2016 and 2021, earning the moniker "DripU" for their stylish and ever-changing combinations.

Ranking the Uniforms: A Matter of Taste

With so many different uniform combinations, ranking them is a subjective exercise. However, some general observations can be made:

  • Chrome gold decals: The switch to chrome gold decals in 2017 was widely considered a positive change, elevating many uniform combinations.
  • Pewter: The color pewter has been a successful addition to UCF's color scheme, often paired with black for a sleek and modern look.
  • Space Game uniforms: The annual Space Game uniforms are consistently ranked highly for their creativity and unique design elements.
  • Blackouts and whiteouts: UCF's uniforms lend themselves well to both blackout and whiteout looks.
  • Tricolor combinations: Opinions on tricolor combinations are divided, with some fans finding them too busy while others appreciate the complexity.

The Malzahn Era and the Move to the Big 12

In 2021, Gus Malzahn became UCF's head coach. In 2023, UCF officially moved into the Big 12 Conference, becoming the first NCAA football program to play at every sanctioned level.
