The CECS Internships for Credit program allows students to earn academic credit while gaining practical experience. Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the CECS Internship Course and receive academic credit, students must meet specific requirements. These requirements ensure that students are academically prepared and can benefit from the internship experience.

  • Major-Related Internship: Students must participate in an internship that is directly related to their major. This ensures that the experience aligns with their academic goals and provides relevant professional development.
  • Department Approval: To qualify for the internship program for the upcoming semester, you must be added to the department’s approved list. In order to qualify for this program in the Fall 2024 term, you must be on the approved list by the department.
  • Prerequisites: Complete the prerequisites for your major. All prerequisites of courses taught within the College of Sciences will be enforced.

Internship Course Details

The Internship Course is graded on a Satisfactory (“S”)/ Unsatisfactory (“U”) basis. This grading system emphasizes the learning and development that occur during the internship experience, rather than traditional academic performance metrics.

Students who do not meet the specific requirements for the CECS Internship Course have alternative options for reporting their internship experience.

  • Experiential Learning’s Internship Course: Students who currently do not meet the requirements for the CECS Internship Course may report their internship experience or enroll in Experiential Learning’s Internship Course.

Most large engineering, technology, and defense firms operate internationally and have offices and clientele across the globe. International internship experiences are a great way to grow professionally as well as gain cultural competency and further personal growth. Academic credit for an international internship may be possible.

UCF has cultivated partnerships with international organizations to provide students with diverse internship opportunities.

  • Tata Power (Mumbai, India): UCF has signed a landmark agreement with Tata Power in Mumbai, India to providing funded internship opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students. Application Guide: This opportunity uses the IECS Common Application.

U.S. Department of State Programs

The US Department of State offers two different programs for students interested in being involved in the foreign affairs mission. The first is their general internship program offered summer, fall, and spring semester in DC or abroad. The second program is merit and need based. Recommended Majors: Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or Information Technology.

Nicholson School of Communication and Media (NSCM) Internship Credit

Students in the Nicholson School of Communication and Media (NSCM) have specific guidelines for earning internship credit.

GPA Requirements

To receive credit for an internship, students must have a 2.5 GPA in their required major courses. Students with less than a 2.5 GPA will not be given academic internship credit. Students must achieve a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 in all UCF Nicholson School of Communication and Media (NSCM) courses taken in the major. All attempts of UCF NSCM courses that could meet major requirements are included in the major GPA calculation, including those taken beyond the minimum required (e.g. additional restricted electives).

Coursework and Residency Requirements

School residency requirement consists of at least 24 semester hours of regularly scheduled 3000-4000 level courses taken from the UCF Nicholson School of Communication and Media. Of the 120 hours required for graduation, 72 hours must be taken outside of the disciplines of Communication and Media Studies (Media Production and Management & Journalism) represented within the Nicholson School of Communication and Media.

Internship Credit Limits

  • A maximum of three credit hours of internship may be earned in one semester.
  • Internship credit, plus all other hours taken within the school, must not exceed 48 hours.
  • A maximum of three credit hours of internship may be earned within the 46 credit hour school maximum within the 120 credit hours required for graduation.
  • A maximum of six credit hours of internship may be earned within the 120 credit hours required for graduation.

Additional Considerations for Media Production and Management (MPM) Majors

  • Students seeking to change tracks from Media Management and Operations to Production or Sports Production once accepted into the major, must re-apply to the Media Production and Management major under the desired track.
  • MPM majors must select their required minor from outside the Mass Media (MPM and JOU) programs to remain below the 48 credit hour school maximum.
  • Students may complete an internship off campus in a professional media production company or corporate operation with advisor's approval.
  • Internship credit may be used in this major with prior school permission.
  • Co-op credit may be used in this major with prior approval from a Media Production and Management advisor.
  • Students must consult with a school advisor.

Catalog Updates

Students who change degree programs (other than from Media Production and Management Pending) and select this major must adopt the most current catalog.

Since 2001, the UCF Global Perspectives and International Initiatives (GPII) has been connecting the campus and Central Florida community to global cultures, ideas and information. GPII also offers internships and fellowships to support their mission of sharpening UCF’s international focus. For almost as long, GPII student interns and fellows have helped to support our mission of sharpening UCF’s international focus.

Eligibility and Application

GPII welcomes applications from UCF students who are actively enrolled as undergraduate or graduate students. All applicants must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0, complete an online application, and submit a resume, cover letter, and an unofficial transcript or degree audit. Internships and fellowships are limited for spring and fall. Internships and fellowships are face-to-face. Although the job duties might be similar, fellows tend to have additional responsibilities. Graduate students are welcome to apply. Applications are evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Generally, Ph.D. Yes.
