It is important to remember that Success Pathways do not substitute for your advisor, degree planning tools, and degree audits. Once you enroll at UCF, Pegasus Path (degree planning) and myKnight Audit (degree audit) are the official tools at UCF. It's crucial to choose your major of choice early and follow Success Pathways in consultation with your advisor.

Declaring a Major, Minor, and Certificates

Declaring a major is an important step in any college career. It is important for students to do thorough research of various majors, visit their respective department offices, and ask questions of people who are majoring in an area that interests you. Students may also find a selection of resources from the Undergraduate Catalog listed below, along with some general information on how to declare a major program. Remember: it’s always best to consult with a Departmental or College advisor before changing majors to ensure no delays in graduation.

A Degree Program is a course of study offered by one of the College of Sciences departments or schools that leads to a respective baccalaureate degree.

Minors are authorized only for certification with baccalaureate degrees. Minors must be certified at the same time as the student’s baccalaureate degree. A student may declare a minor up to but no later than the submission of the online Intent to Graduate Form. However, students are strongly urged to declare a minor as early as possible.

An undergraduate Certificate is a supplement to the bachelor’s degree program/major. Certificates are optional. Students must be admitted in a degree seeking program to be eligible to receive an undergraduate Certificate, and a Certificate will only be granted together with completion of a UCF baccalaureate degree. All graduation requirements (i.e. the certificate and major/minor) must be from the same UCF Undergraduate Catalog for which a student is eligible.

Navigating Major Selection and Potential Challenges

Declaring a major is an important step in your college career. Research various majors, visit their respective department offices, and ask questions of people who are majoring in an area that interests you.

It is important to remember that all majors have tough classes, and some majors have all tough classes. If you find yourself struggling in a class, don’t panic and change your major. Instead, get help from your professor, a teaching assistant, SARC (Student Academic Resource Center), or a classmate.

Most of the Majors in the College of Sciences are open-access programs, meaning that there are no limitations on students who want to declare. If you are applying to a limited access program, the process is a bit more complex. Entrance requirements vary by program, so check with an advisor about how best to proceed. For example, you may need to complete a separate application, have a select set of courses with a specific grade, or have a minimum grade point average. When you initially declare a Limited Access major, the name of your major will be followed by “Pending”. “Pending” means that you are this major until you do or do not apply and get accepted into the program.
