Navigating UCF Dental Plan Benefits: A Comprehensive Guide
The University of Central Florida (UCF) provides various dental plan benefits and resources to cater to the diverse needs of its community, including students, faculty, and staff. Understanding these options can help individuals make informed decisions about their dental care and manage costs effectively. This article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the dental benefits available at UCF, including the UCF Dental Center, insurance options, membership plans, and other relevant resources.
UCF Dental Center: Quality and Affordable Dental Care
The UCF Dental Center, situated on the second floor of the Health Center, offers a blend of quality and affordability in a soothing environment. It is accessible to all members of the UCF community, irrespective of their dental insurance coverage. The center provides a range of services, including preventive, restorative, and cosmetic dental treatments.
Insurance and Payment Options
The Dental Center is in-network with several insurance plans, including:
- Ameritas PPO
- Cigna Dental DPPO Network
- Humana PPO
- United Healthcare Dental PPO
The center will submit insurance claims to these in-network plans. However, claims are not submitted to out-of-network dental plans. Patients are financially responsible for all charges incurred at each visit, whether covered by health insurance or not, and all out-of-pocket expenses as determined by your health insurer are due at the time of service. It's recommended to review all of your insurance benefits and exclusions before your first visit.
For those without conventional dental insurance, Student Health Services offers a Dental Membership Plan as a viable option.

Dental Membership Plan
The Dental Membership Plan at UCF is a direct primary care agreement designed to reduce overall dental costs for members. UCF students can avail of this plan by paying an annual membership fee of $300. The benefits include:
- Regular exams
- Regular cleanings
- X-rays
It's important to note that the Dental Membership Plan is not insurance and cannot be used in conjunction with conventional dental insurance or other benefits. The membership covers services typically included in general dentistry, and fees must be paid in full before benefits can be utilized. Referrals to specialists are not covered under this plan.
Urgent Care and Appointments
For individuals experiencing pain and/or swelling, the Dental Center offers walk-in urgent care services and makes every effort to accommodate them into the schedule. Those without pain or swelling need to call to schedule an initial appointment.
Cost Considerations
While the UCF Dental Center does not offer free services, its fees average 20% less than dentists in the Orlando area. Unlike other departments within UCF Student Health Services, there are no free services provided at the Dental Center.
X-Rays and Second Opinions
If you have had x-rays taken at another office within the last six months, you can bring them to your appointment at the UCF Dental Center. In most cases, you will not be charged for additional x-rays. The center also provides second opinions, offering limited exams with two to three x-rays of the problem area to address specific dental concerns.

Comprehensive Examinations and Cleanings
A comprehensive examination and x-rays are required by law because a dentist is legally responsible for diagnosing the treatments and cleaning necessary for each patient. If you have a healthy, disease-free mouth, a routine cleaning (prophylaxis) is recommended every six months. Scaling and root planning, or “deep cleaning,” is available for patients with periodontal (gum) issues.
Wisdom Teeth Evaluation
Wisdom teeth need to be evaluated because in most cases they can cause pain, swelling, and eventual crowding problems for many college-aged patients.
Insurance Claim Submissions
The Dental Center will only submit a claim to your insurance if you have one of the in-network plans they can accept (Cigna Dental DPPO Network or United Healthcare Dental PPO). Claims will not be sent for out-of-network services; however, you can file yourself for reimbursement if applicable.
Language Assistance
The Dental Center provides language assistance through a bilingual staff member or a certified medical translation service.
Health Insurance Options for UCF Students and Employees
Student Health Insurance
All University of Central Florida students are required to enroll in health insurance. For international students entering UCF through Shorelight, health insurance coverage is offered through a partnership with Wellfleet Student and University Health Plans (UHP). The Shorelight SHIP is provided by Wellfleet Student. The dental plan is included in the Wellfleet medical plan. Students can visit any dentist of their choice, as there is no specific network of dentists to choose from. Enrollment in this plan is mandatory.

Employee Health Insurance
The UCF HR Benefits section manages a wide range of competitive benefits, including medical, dental, and vision insurance, retirement options, paid leave, employee assistance programs, and tuition waivers. UCF is committed to the well-being and growth of employees and offers a comprehensive benefits package.
Faculty members are afforded an opportunity to enroll in all insurance, retirement and other benefit programs that are available to UCF employees.
Understanding Insurance Plans: PPO vs. HMO
When selecting a health insurance plan, it's important to understand the differences between PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) and HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) plans. UCF Health Student Health Services primary care providers are in-network participants for Florida Blue (formerly BlueCross/Blue Shield) PPO & Blue Options plans, United Healthcare, AvMED, Aetna, Cigna PPO, and Tricare plans. Please note that we do not accept most HMO plans.
Additional Benefits and Resources for UCF Employees
Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a university-funded benefit offering support and resources to address personal challenges and concerns that may affect personal well-being and/or work performance.
Tuition Assistance
The University offers tuition assistance to eligible employees in the form of tuition waivers, good for up to six credit hours of coursework per semester.
Discounted Entertainment and Technology
Current UCF Faculty and Staff are eligible to purchase up to 4 discounted season tickets in select locations. Certain UCF negotiated contracts extend discounts to UCF employees for leisure use or personal purchases. The UCF School of Performing Arts offers a discounted rate of $10 (50% off regular ticket rate). The UCF Technology Product Center (TPC) and campus technology suppliers offer various academic discounts on computing and electronic items.
Dental Insurance: Protecting Your Oral Health
Dental insurance is a crucial tool for protecting your overall health and the health of your family. Regular dental cleanings help prevent bacteria buildup, which can lead to decay, cavities, and tooth loss.
Benefits of Dental Insurance
Good dental coverage should save you money by covering preventive care such as check-ups and cleanings, potentially at little or no cost, depending on the plan you choose.
Types of Dental Plans: PPO and DHMO
In some states, you may be able to choose between a PPO and DHMO plan. With a PPO plan, you can see any dentist, but you will save more if you visit a dentist in your network.
Guardian Dental Plans
Choose a Guardian PPO or DHMO plan and gain access to one of the largest dental networks nationwide. It’s easy to find a dentist near your home or office, and you’ll enjoy cost savings.
