UCF Football Space Uniforms: A History of Innovation and Inspiration
As UCF embarks on its inaugural season as the youngest member of a Power 5 conference, the athletics department commemorates this special moment by reflecting on the history of its iconic space uniforms. The annual Space Game, a tradition that began in 2017, has become a symbol of UCF's unique identity and its deep connection to space exploration. The seventh installment of the Space Game was held on Nov. 11, 2023, when UCF hosted Oklahoma State.
The Genesis of the Space Game
The concept for the Space Game was first discussed in 2014 when Jimmy Skiles re-joined the UCFAA as assistant athletic director for fan development. Skiles, now the Senior Executive Associate Athletics Director, understood the significance of space to the university's story.
"We’ve tried to stay as authentic as possible, and I think that’s why this game has grown to be as popular as it has," Skiles says. "We aren’t using space as a gimmick or a ‘cool’ theme. This is UCF’s story."
UCF's involvement in space exploration dates back to its earliest days, with NASA providing the university's first research grant. Since then, UCF has become a hub for world-class space research, with missions to the moon and outer planets, advancements in the rapidly developing space industry, and the design of new space instrumentation and communication.
Michael D. Johnson, provost and vice president of academic affairs, emphasizes the importance of the Space Game in celebrating UCF's unique identity. "The annual Space Game celebrates UCF’s distinctive beginning and our simultaneously expanding prominence in space exploration and in athletics," Johnson says.

A Uniform Like No Other
Since redesigning in 2015, UCF has worn 44 unique uniform combinations in 52 games. Each uniform is carefully crafted to tell a story and honor a specific milestone in space exploration.
Emma Schneider, former director of #Brand design, played a key role in creating the 2021 and 2022 uniforms. She highlights the in-house design process as a unique aspect of the Space Game uniforms.
"I think the thing that probably would surprise most people is that we do the design work in-house," Schneider says. "That’s one of the things that make it really special. It’s been my favorite project to work on, far and away. I just love seeing the whole thing start from this one concept and explode to touch every creative department within UCF, and then all the graphics and merchandising roll out that follows."
In previous years, the theme has been inspired by various milestones: the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, the space shuttle, and in 2022, deep space and exoplanets. The 2023 theme, "Reaching New Horizons," highlights space research projects led by UCF students, faculty, and graduates, while also honoring the team's first season in the Big 12 conference.
The design process is a collaborative effort, with #content designers Josh Brdicko and Sahid Alpizar (who worked with UCFAA from 2019-22) working closely with Schneider to bring the vision to life.

More Than Just a Uniform
The Space Game uniforms are more than just a fashion statement; they are a symbol of UCF's commitment to innovation and its role in shaping the future of space exploration. The uniforms are meticulously crafted, with attention paid to every detail, from the name plates to the helmet decals.
Brad Anderson, director of equipment operations, emphasizes the hard work and dedication that goes into creating the Space Game uniforms.
"We’re pulling 16-17-hour days, four days a week throughout the season," Anderson says. "People get excited when they see the finished product, but it didn’t just appear. It took 20 people’s vision and hard work coming to life to get it in that player’s locker and onto the field."
The uniforms are further enhanced by in-depth storytelling that showcases every meticulous detail.
"We set a standard and expectation in the roll-out of the first full uniform in 2018 that we’ve continued to build on every year," says Eric DeSalvo ’09, associate athletics director of #Content. "The uniforms are incredible on their own, but we wouldn’t be doing them or the team who produced them justice unless we told the story."

Inspiring the Next Generation
The Space Game is not just about celebrating UCF's past accomplishments; it's also about inspiring the next generation of students and space explorers. Skiles hopes that the Space Game will attract the best and brightest students to UCF.
"That’s my hope with the Space Game - that not only does it inspire more people to check out UCF and the SpaceU brand, but also attracts the best quality students," Skiles says. "It’s not just about cool uniforms to get football recruits here. It’s about telling the story of what our people have already accomplished and are working on for the future."
UCF's connection to the space program is undeniable. According to UCF, 29% of Kennedy Space Center employees are from the university, and more than 30 alumni worked on the Artemis 1 mission at NASA. Skiles hopes that the starry uniforms will inspire the next generation of Knights.
"That's one of my goals always for the space game is that some kid watching somewhere wants to either go to space one day or work on building rockets or sees UCF and is like man SpaceU that's where that's where I want to go to school," Skiles said.
A Look Back at the Uniforms
UCF has sported a wide variety of unique uniform combinations. Here's a look at some of the most memorable:
- The Good: The space uniforms, featuring moon decals, constellation stripes, and little white stars, have consistently ranked among the best. Other top looks include blackouts with white logos and gold accents, all-white uniforms with oversized black numbers and gold trim, and combinations featuring pewter, a complementary color to the Knights' scheme.
- The Bad: Some combinations have been less successful, such as those mixing dark gray and black with brightly colored helmets, or those with mismatched colors. Patriotic looks have also been divisive, with some feeling that they don't quite capture the UCF brand.
