Navigating UCF Graduate Housing Options: A Comprehensive Guide

For graduate students embarking on their academic journey at the University of Central Florida (UCF), securing suitable housing is a crucial first step. UCF offers a variety of on-campus and affiliated off-campus housing options, each with unique features and benefits. Understanding these options, eligibility requirements, and application processes is essential for making an informed decision. This article provides a detailed overview of UCF graduate housing, drawing upon official information to guide students through the selection and application process.

On-Campus Housing: Convenience and Community

UCF Housing provides diverse living arrangements, including shared suite and apartment-style floorplans. While first-year students receive priority for on-campus housing on the Orlando main campus, graduate students are also eligible to apply, though availability may be limited. All UCF Housing communities offer furnished rooms, utilities (including high-speed Wi-Fi), individual agreements, 24-hour staff support, and convenient locations.

Agreement Types: Choosing the Right Fit

UCF Housing offers different agreement lengths to accommodate varying student needs:

  • Academic Agreement: A 2-semester agreement (Fall and Spring).

  • Annual Agreement: A 3-semester agreement (Fall, Spring, and the following Summer).

  • Rosen Agreement: Primarily an Academic Agreement (Fall and Spring), but with the option to add the following Summer. This hybrid agreement is available at the Rosen College Apartments.

The Rosen College Apartments are available for both first-year students and upperclassmen, offering apartment-style rooms with full kitchens, living rooms, and a private community pool. A key advantage of the Rosen agreement is that residents do not have to vacate their space during winter break.

Lottery System and Application Process

Due to limited on-campus housing availability for upperclassmen and graduate students, Towers at Knights Plaza and NorthView utilize a lottery system for returning residents, upperclassmen, and off-campus students. The Rosen housing applications operate on a first-come, first-served basis.

To be considered for on-campus housing, students must apply and submit their prepayment during the lottery or application window for their desired housing type. The housing agreement status will be updated from “submitted” to “confirmed” once space is verified.

Roommate Matching and Open Housing

UCF Housing offers a Roommate Matching service to help students find compatible roommates. Students create profiles with personal descriptions and can communicate with potential matches through the Housing Portal.

UCF Housing and Residence Life also provides an Open Housing option, allowing students of all classifications and in all housing agreement types to reside together, regardless of sex. Students opting into Open Housing can only roommate match with other students of the same housing agreement type who have also opted into Open Housing. Participation in Open Housing is voluntary and requires all roommates in a suite/apartment to have requested it.

Living Learning Communities

Students seeking a more focused housing experience can participate in a Living Learning Community (LLC). These communities group students based on a common interest or academic program. LLCs may be selected in fall semesters only, and roommate group members must also be approved for the same LLC. Students with approved LLC designations will only be able to select rooms within the designated floors for their LLC.

Housing Accommodations for Students with Disabilities

UCF provides reasonable housing accommodations for students with disabilities, coordinated through Student Accessibility Services (SAS) and the Department of Housing and Residence Life (DHRL). Students needing accommodations may choose to have DHRL Staff assign housing based on their approved accommodation or use the priority room selection process to select the housing of their choice. Accommodations requests are determined by Student Accessibility Services in connection with Housing and Residence Life.

Assistance animals, including service animals and emotional support animals (ESAs), are permitted with appropriate approval and documentation. Pets are generally not permitted in UCF student housing, except as authorized by the University.

Off-Campus Housing: Exploring Alternative Options

Given the limited availability of on-campus housing for graduate students, exploring off-campus options is highly recommended. The Office of Student Neighborhood Relations provides guidance and support to students searching for off-campus housing. UCF has three affiliated off-campus apartment complexes, offering additional housing choices.

Key Considerations for Off-Campus Housing

  • Location and Transportation: Consider the proximity to campus, transportation options (including bus routes and parking), and surrounding amenities.

  • Budget: Determine your budget and factor in rent, utilities, and other expenses.

  • Lease Terms: Carefully review the lease terms, including the length of the lease, payment schedule, and any associated fees or penalties.

  • Amenities: Consider the amenities offered, such as furnished apartments, laundry facilities, and recreational areas.

  • Safety and Security: Research the safety and security measures in place, such as gated access, security patrols, and emergency contact information.

Eligibility for UCF Housing

Eligibility for UCF Housing is based on student classification and the semester(s) for which housing is sought. Students participating in the UCF Online degree program are not eligible to live in UCF Housing. Availability of all housing types varies each year, and eligibility does not guarantee housing.

Applying for Housing

The housing application process involves the following steps:

  1. Application: Log in to myUCF and navigate to Tools > Housing > Housing Portal > Application.

  2. Prepayment: Submit the required prepayment.

  3. Roommate Matching (Optional): Participate in Roommate Matching to find preferred roommates.

  4. Room Selection: Select your room assignment online during the online room selection process (May through July). Room selection appointment times are determined based on when you completed your housing application.
