UCF Rosen College of Hospitality Management: A World-Class Hospitality Education
The UCF Rosen College of Hospitality Management, part of the University of Central Florida (UCF), stands as a leading institution in hospitality education. Strategically located in the heart of Orlando, the world’s premier tourist destination, the college offers students unparalleled access to hands-on learning and career opportunities. This article delves into the history, academic programs, campus life, and unique features that make Rosen College a distinguished center for hospitality education.
Historical Overview
UCF's initial foray into hospitality management began in 1983, with the establishment of its first program in Hospitality Management. This program evolved from UCF's Dick Pope Sr. Institute for Tourism Studies, which was founded in 1979. Dr. Abraham Pizam spearheaded the department from its inception in 1983 until 1993, laying a strong foundation for its future growth. Dr. Robert Ford then took over as department chair, serving from 1993 to 1998. Dr. Pizam returned in 1998 and continued to lead the department for another 17 years, stepping down in 2018. In 2018, Dr. Youcheng Wang was appointed as the new Dean and served until October of 2023.
A pivotal moment in the college's history occurred in 2000 when Harris Rosen, owner of Orlando-based Rosen Hotels & Resorts, made a significant donation. Rosen, a long-time supporter of the university, contributed $10 million in cash and 25 acres of land, valued at $8 million. He also provided an additional $1.1 million in cash for scholarships. This substantial donation acted as a catalyst, attracting further contributions, including an $18 million matching gift from the State of Florida and $5 million from the Orange County Convention and Visitors Bureau. As a result, the program regained its status as an independent school, named Rosen School of Hospitality Management in honor of its major benefactor.
